New episode up!! https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/OkMkQOyBgAb

June is Pride Month and for this episode of Not Now, Maybe Later, we are focused on q***r teen mental health. And these are teens who need to be focused on! GLBTQ+ teens are six times more likely to experience symptoms of depression and twice as likely to be suicidal than their peers AND, according to The Trevor Project, 60% of GLBTQ+ youth who wanted mental health care in 2022 were not able to get it. Listen to this episode to hear about resources, trends, and Maine q***r-friendly events happening throughout Pride and year round. With special guest, Maura Oakes from OUT Maine and creator and host of “Thinking OUT Loud: The OUT Maine Podcast”, we talk about issues for GLBTQ+ teens in schools, 2023 trends like astrology and binging “Heartstopper”, and what the genderbread person is. Listen, follow, and like “Not Now, Maybe Later” and “Thinking OUT Loud” wherever you get your podcasts! NNML is a project of Sweetser.

Episode 7 of NNML is up on Spotify, YouTube, and SoundCloud!

On the 7th episode of “Not Now, Maybe Later”, listen to the story of a real teen who has been through it – anxiety since she was very young, starting therapy in high school, and finishing therapy too. Hear about this teen’s real experience of COVID and school in the era of school shootings. And her honesty about her therapy and her family playing their part in her mental health getting better. This episode includes one (now) funny story about how anxiety and a haunted trail are not a great combination. Listen, follow, and like “Not Now, Maybe Later” wherever you get your podcasts! Everything affects sleep. Not just our anxiety, but the pace of life and the things we do to compensate for it. Inadequate sleep is one of the biggest factors which cause mental health conditions to worsen. In episode 5, we talk about the role of sleep and whether medications can help as well as if therapy can really make an impact if someone is not sleeping. Episode 5 - Take a Chill Pill - is now on air!

Meds. Pills. Anti-depressants. Psychiatric medications. Whatever you have heard them called, or whatever you are calling them – the option to take a prescribed medication (sometimes more than one) to treat mental health problems is a big conversation. According to a 2021 study, over 6 million US children and teens (ages 0 to 17) were taking a prescribed psychiatric medication. Of those, over 3 million of them were teenagers. There are many questions, practical and ethical ones, about the risks and benefits of taking medication to treat your mental health. Fortunately, for this episode of NNML, we have a very smart guest who explains SO many important things to know and think about when it comes to taking or not taking psychiatric medication. This episode’s guest is Sam Kingsley, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, who works with kids, teens, and adults to support their mental health. And yes, he will explain many of the big words that come up and much more. Listen, follow, and like now on Spotify, YouTube, or SoundCloud! This podcast is a project of Sweetser.

In the fourth episode of NNML, my guest, a mother of two teens with mental health needs, we discuss teens making mistakes. Mom said some great stuff:
“Mental illness makes it much harder for [teens] to make good choices much quicker and for them to reach out and learn from it... feelings are bigger, the control is harder, it comes from pure will power or personality.”
