As stated by StatsCanada, “The consumer price index is an indicator of changes in consumer prices experienced by Canadians. It is obtained by comparing, over time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Since the basket contains goods and services of unchanging or equivalent quantity and quality, the index reflects only pure price change.”

In other words, the consumer price index gives us an idea of how prices change year to year. And while the basket is fixed, our own personal baskets differ and thus how we experience year to year changes differs as well.

You’ve heard of inflation, but have you heard of personal inflation?

This week we discussed the recommendations for sleeping 8 hours a night and our discussion really highlighted different qualities of evidence. If you remember back to our episode about ghosts, we had market research done on a relatively unknown population. For sleep recommendations, we have systematic reviews, which review all available and relevant studies on a topic to determine the strength of evidence available, and panels of international experts who vote on the recommendations.

To learn more about the research methods underlying the recommendation to sleep 8 hours a day, check out our latest episode! Available everywhere!

How many hours did you sleep last night?

We all know that sleep is important for our health and well-being, so why do we use it as a reserve of extra time to cut into to give us a few more hours in the day?

This week’s episode tackles why we need 8 hours of sleep and what happens if we sleep too much, or too little. We also answer the hotly debated question, can you catch up on sleep?

Are our individual efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions futile since 71% of global CO2 emissions are produced by 100 companies?

No.

It all comes down to how emissions are classified. Much of the 71% of emissions referenced in the 2017 Carbon Majors Report that this statistic came from are Scope 3 emissions, which means that they include downstream (ie consumer) emissions. For a full breakdown of the different scopes of emissions and why we still have a personal responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, check out our latest episode. Available everywhere.

Some general tips:

♻️ make sure the items are clean and dry
