If you know, you know… For those who don’t know, Gloria is a Colombian woman in the story of Modern Family who marries Jay Pritchett, the rich old patriarch of a white American family. After six seasons of her accent being made fun of tirelessly, she has enough.

Many Deaf people may find themselves relating to Gloria where their spoken language is made fun of or critiqued to the point where their intellect is doubted. In Australia, Deaf people are judged upon their ability to speak English or their written English without recognition that they are bilingual and that their first language is Auslan. This is a global issue that Deaf people face where their ability to speak the spoken language used in their country is judged without any consideration of their first language that is sign language. This issue demonstrates Audism and the bias of English dominance globally.
The next time you judge a Deaf person’s English, ask yourself whether you’d like your Auslan to be judged.

NB: Sign language is not universal and different sign languages are used in different countries or regions. For example in Australia, England and the United States where the predominant language is English, they all have their own respective sign languages; Auslan, British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL).

ID: Screenshot of dialogue of the Modern Family captioned that reads: Gloria - Do you know how frustrating it is to have to translate very thing in my head before I say it? To have people laugh in my laugh because I’m struggling to find the words? You should trying talking in my shoes for one mile. Jay - I think you meant…. Gloria- I know what I meant to mean. Do you know how smart I am in Auslan* (it was edited to read Auslan)? Of course you don’t.

💜 Happy International Women’s Day! 💜

There are many incredible Deaf/hard of hearing women & non-binary people and they deserve to be recognised for the work they do for our community.

This year’s theme is: Breaking the Bias. So many women & non-binary people in our community have shown that bias can be broken, especially in a hearing-centric world where we experience ableism, audism and oppression on a daily basis.

The work done by Deaf & hard of hearing women & non-binary people leaves a lasting impact on the community.

In the second tile, we encourage you to tag your fellow Deaf & hard of hearing women/non-binary people.

The third tile has a list of six deaf women & non-binary people we think you should follow.

If you know of any more Deaf women & non-binary people we should follow, please let us know by tagging them in the comments!

ID: Three tiles are pictured. The first tile has text in the centre that reads: International Day of Women - Surrounding the text box in the centre, is a background of various faces of women of different skin and hair types. Then the following prompts are listed with a space underneath for people to tag others: (Tag a woman or non-binary person who) Makes you happy, makes you laugh, encourages/supports you, is a great Deaf leader, inspires you and gives the best advice. ID: Text with a plain purple background that reads "Every Deaf person reading this is a role model to someone without realising. You don't need your own Deaf vlog, have a Deaf family, have attended a Deaf school, to teach Auslan or have learnt Auslan as your first language. Your audiogram does not define your Deafhood. You represent what it means to be Deaf everyday. You inspire people to embrace their Deaf identity. You show people outside our community the beauty of Deaf Gain. Please continue to live your truth. The Deaf community is lucky to have you." The Deaf Lens Australia logo and tag is displayed underneath at the bottom.
