The Millennial VSCOholar This vodcast follows the rambling thoughts and lifestyle advice of a Black Millennial female studying a PhD.

She by no means has all the answers but seeks to engage in some much needed self-care by reflecting on her experiences in life and in academia.

The murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police in the US, the murder of two Black trans women (Riah Milton and Dominique Fells), the death of Belly Mujinga, the over-representation of Black and Brown people in Covid-19 deaths, amongst many more transgressions, yet again force society to confront the fact that RACISM KILLS!

From police brutality, health inequalities, poor housing conditions, climate injustice, the hostile environment, to failure to hold those responsible for killiing Black people accountable, a consistent pattern of devaluing Black and Brown bodies has permeated most institutions in our society.

“Ignorance allied with power is the most ferocious enemy justice can have” - James Baldwin.

I stand in solidarity with protesters and my thoughts are with the countless number of Black people who have lost their lives to racism and state sponsored violence. Black lives will always matter even when the road to justice seems long and unrelenting!

We need to talk about the victims of the pandemic and lockdown measures!

The current pandemic has shone a light on many victims who have been disproportionately impacted by Covid-19 and/or lockdown measures due their adverse socioeconomic standing. In this podcast, Dr Katucha Bento and I delve further into who these victims are and how their experience of lockdown reflects the continuous systemic oppression they face.

Covid-19 in some way or another has affected us all. Nevertheless, systemic oppression and marginalisation of those vulnerable in our society have seen many fall victim to the virus and/or lockdown measures that have made it difficult or dangerous for some self-isolating or in quarantine. In this po...

My lockdown experience has been very interesting to say the least!

Whilst this period has given many of us the much needed time to reflect on our lives, going through a life-changing experience during a global pandemic has been an emotional rollercoaster, alongside a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Watch me reflect on what it’s been like to be LOCKED UP KNOCKED UP! 🤰🏾

REFLECTION TIME! 💭💭💭

As we come to the end of week 6 in lockdown, there’s still some uncertainty about what coming out of lockdown will be like. Nevertheless, this period of lockdown has definitely been a much needed time for reflection. Many questions are surfacing around what has been our biggest take away from these past few weeks in lockdown? What will we miss the most once lockdown is over? What will be the first thing we do once lockdown ends?

One thing I ask we continue to reflect on post-lockdown is the lives that are often undervalued until moments of national crisis. Whilst it’s wonderful to watch people come together, we’ve got to be mindful we are not blinded by the positivity propaganda and continue to demand collective liberation beyond the pandemic panic.

Read and share my new article posted on Racial Justice Network blog!

No doubt through these uncertain times positivity is needed to keep spirits high and allow society to function without going into complete despair. Nevertheless, we have to be mindful and cautious …

A lot of people seems to have gotten really preachy about being socially responsible during this global pandemic. I have witnessed many people irked that some are not taking this seriously enough, whilst some are angered that some people are taking it too far with panic buying and their lack of consideration for others.

During such scary and uncertain times it is important now more than ever we practice some empathy for one another. So although "social distancing" may be an effective method to limit the spread of the virus is "social distancing" really the solution other societal issues presented by this pandemic?

Check out my new Vodcast on some of my thoughts regarding "social distancing" and let me know what your thoughts!

What does it mean to love and be loved? Love comes in so many different forms and we should try to recognise this daily!

I spent my Valentine’s day thinking about all the people who had showed me love and how grateful I felt for the love I receive. I would like to spend more time being grateful for the things I have this year as abundance manifest itself in my life in so many ways.

I also spent Valentine’s Day night with my husband-to-be. We ate, laughed - a lot, and reflected on our future together. We recorded a video thinking about things we had learnt in the last decade. We continually talk about how we can use these things the foster a healthy relationship as we move forward into married life.

It’s been a while since I’ve graced y’all with my opinion! 🗣

The run up to Christmas 2019 has been hectic but it’s also contained a lot of reflecting, especially following the general election. Thought about bringing you a podcast about the election but a lot has been said and genuinely sadden to be living under a conservative government. There’s a lot of work still to be done! In order to do this work we must march on with love in our hearts.

We shall not dwell on the disappointments December has brought but look forward to all the love, joy and laughter today will bring. Whilst I am indifferent to Christmas Day, I enjoy the time spent with family and friends and use it as a time to reflect on the things and people I’m grateful for.

So whatever you’re doing on December 25th, regardless of whether you’re feeling the festive cheer or not, take a moment to do some healthy reflection on your relationship with your family and friends and what you’re grateful for.

I’ll be posting a podcast in the next week reflecting on 2019. Stay tuned 💫

Sorry for the radio silence and I hoped you missed me! It’s been hectic returning to the UK from my research visit to the US! Glad to be back and now that things have settled a bit I bring you this week’s podcast that delves into what it means to struggle with whiteness.

Whiteness has been defined as the structures that produce white privilege and systemic racism in our society. Therefore, a struggle with whiteness may show itself in a variety of ways for different groups and in different context. I shared a post last week that shows a white woman rejecting the idea that racism is prevalent towards Black people and by centring her own experiences to reject notions of racism and prejudices presented by a Black playwright. Here, she displays her own struggle to acknowledge structures that produce and maintain white privilege.

What are you thoughts? Do you have any examples of struggling with whiteness? What are your own experiences of struggling with whiteness.

🧡

Joined by fellow PhD researcher, Phoenix, we reflect on my time spent in ATL, the importance of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) in a society entangled in the struggle with whiteness and provide some context on what it means to struggle with whiteness.

If you haven’t seen Harriet yet I recommend you go and see it... or wait till it’s out on DVD, Blu-ray or whatever streaming service you use... either way it’s a MUST WATCH! For the fact it’s a film about an amazing Black woman who was pivotal in the ending of the enslavement and mass genocide of African people in the United States.

Tune into this new episode in which Dr LaGarrett King and I reflect on our thoughts and some of themes in the film.

Struggling to deal with negative people in your life? Who are these energy/emotional vampires in your life? 🦇

Often they are loved ones, family and friends, colleagues, teammates, etc. so we struggle to find adequate ways to address the negativity they bring to our lives. We continue to feel weighted down by their negative comments, pessimism and unhappiness.

I have come to understand most people are not doing this intentionally, whilst some definitely seek to suck your happiness and joy, a lot of people are just frustrated, discouraged and lack genuine feelings of joy. However, their negative energy creates a ripple effect that impacts on those in close proximity.

Therefore, it is important that we set our boundaries with these vampires. This can come in many forms; creating emotional space, nurturing ourselves, vocally stating our boundaries and/or limiting various forms of contact.

Whatever you need to do, make sure to value and prioritise your own needs. Listen to your body and mind. What do you want to do and how can you best meet your needs? Rid yourself of the negativity🧡

What do you do to deal with negative people in your life?

Please comment your thoughts, tips and advice.

“I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other.” - Harriet Tubman

I was planning to post my vodcast this evening but instead I went to see a screening and panel discussion of the new movie Harriet, about the life of one of THE GREATEST SHEROES to ever exist - Harriet Tubman, and I am soooo glad I did this instead!

I would highly recommend everyone go and see this film putting aside your expectations of slavery narratives.

Alongside, the vodcast I already had planned for you this week, I will be providing a podcast exploring some of my reflections on this film and the discussion that followed.
