Netflix series Wednesday serves as a reboot and spinoff of The Addams Family, with a whole new cast taking on the franchise’s classic roles.

Created by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Tim Burton, the series follows Wednesday’s life as a student at supernatural boarding school Nevermore Academy.

‘Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore,” a synopsis reads.

Who is in the cast for Wednesday?

Emma Myers plays the role of Enid Sinclair, the roommate of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) at Nevermore Academy. Speaking to NME about the character, Myers said: “She gets bunked with Wednesday at Nevermore and is the exact polar opposite of her. But it kind of works out because opposites attract and she is very into gossip so becomes Wednesday’s informant on the rest of the school.”

Myers was previously known for her role in The Glades, an American crime drama which ran for four seasons from 2010 to 2013. She has also made appearances in films Southern Gospel, A Taste Of Christmas and 2021’s Girl In The Basement.

In Wednesday, the supporting cast includes Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White and Christina Ricci, who plays the role of Marilyn Thornhill, also feature in the series.

In a four-star review, NME wrote: “If there’s one thing fans of The Addams Family should know before watching Netflix reboot Wednesday, it’s to expect the unexpected.

“Yes, the look – pigtails, pale skin, pinstripes – is similar to the ‘90s classic. Yes, she remains po-faced and prickly. Yes, it’s still set in a creepy mansion. But dip a toe beyond the first few episodes, and you’ll find a very different Wednesday to the one we’ve come to know.”

The former Oasis guitarist, co-vocalist and songwriter will take his solo band to Wythenshawe Park for a show on August 26, 2023.

It marks the band’s first full headline performance in the city since 2019, as well as the first time that Wythenshawe Park has payed host to a major outdoor summer concert. The park is close to Longsight where Gallagher grew up.

Supporting Gallagher and his band is Primal Scream and Future Islands. Tickets for the show go on general sale this Friday (December 2) at 10am GMT here. A pre-sale goes live tomorrow (December 1) at 12pm GMT.

The announcement follows Gallagher’s new Johnny Marr-assisted single, ‘Pretty Boy‘, which arrived last month. It’s the first taste of Gallagher’s new album that’s set to be released next year. Although no date has been revealed, the musician recently let slip that it will be in May 2023.

His new album will be the follow-up to his 2017 LP ‘Who Built The Moon?.

In other news, Gallagher joined Hall & Oates in giving a band their approval of an ’80s reimagining of Oasis‘ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’.

Gallagher retweeted a clip of DECO’s mash-up, which mashes the band’s ’90s classic together with Hall & Oates ’80s hit ‘Out Of Touch’. He wrote in response to the band’s assumption that he’d be “livid” about the reversioning: “In any era it’s STILL a tuuuune!!”

Hall & Oates, meanwhile, replied to the clip on Twitter with the “100” emoji.

Joe Pesci has revealed that he intentionally avoided Macaulay Culkin on the set of Home Alone.

The Goodfellas actor appeared alongside the child star in the 1990 Christmas comedy and its 1992 sequel Lost In New York.

Pesci played Harry, one of the two robbers repeatedly thwarted by the young Kevin McCallister (Culkin). And to ensure their on-screen relationship remained sufficiently hostile, Pesci purposely kept his distance from Culkin when they weren’t filming.

“I remember Macaulay as being a really sweet kid and, even at his age, very professional,” Pesci said in a new interview with People, before adding that he “intentionally limited my interactions with him to preserve the dynamic between his character, Kevin, and my character Harry”.

Explaining the decision, the actor said that he didn’t want “it to come across on the screen that we were in any way friendly”.

He added: “I wanted to maintain the integrity of the adversarial relationship.”

Outside of Home Alone Pesci is best known for his film collaborations with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro including Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino and The Irishman. Some of his other top credits include the Lethal Weapon franchise and My Cousin Vinny.

Next year, the actor will appear in Pete Davidson’s new comedy series, Bupkis.

The Peacock series is loosely based on Davidson’s life, featuring a fictionalised version of the actor-comedian.

According to Variety Pesci has signed up to play Davidson’s grandfather in the series, joining Edie Falco (The Sopranos) who will play the comedian’s mother.

This is only Pesci’s second regular television role in his career after starring in NBC series Half Nelson in 1985.

Bupkis is set to be produced by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, with Dave Sirus and Judah Miller on co-writing duties.

The show is described as a “raw” and “unflinching” version of Davidson’s real life, which will include a “mixture of grounded storytelling with absurd elements”.

A release date for the series is yet to be announced.

Elon Musk is set to become the Number One influencer on Twitter.

According to analysts, the new Twitter boss will be the most-followed user on the social media platform by January 17, 2023.

Statisticians at Social Blade have told BBC News that Musk, who currently has 120million followers, will soon overtake former US President Barack Obama, who has 130million.

It will mark an unprecedented moment in the social media industry; never before has it seen a platform with a chief executive who is also its biggest personality.

In effect, Musk will become the “chief influencer” less than six months after completing his $44bn (£36bn) acquisition of the company in late October.

Over the past 12 months Musk has gained 268,303 followers a day on average, according to Social Blade, and lost followers on only five days, which can all be linked to news events.

He dropped nearly 200,000 followers on November 12 when major job cuts were announced at Twitter.

Social Blade added that the Twitter CEO – who is also CEO of SpaceX and Tesla – has been posting 84 per cent more often since buying the platform.

On November 22 he sent 75 separate tweets either as posts, replies or retweets, which marks a record for him.

Meanwhile, last week Twitter ended its COVID misinformation policy under Musk’s new leadership, it’s been revealed.

A new statement on the social media company’s website revealed that it stopped investigating accounts allegedly spreading misinformation about the pandemic as of November 23.

As reported by The Guardian users spotted the update this week and saw the following update made to the website’s online rules: “Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy.”

In other news, Musk has revealed that he sleeps next to a revolver and cans of Diet Coke, while author Stephen King has called the CEO a “visionary” who has been “terrible” for Twitter.

The Cure have released an upgraded and extended HD version of their 1991 documentary Play Out – watch it in full below.

READ MORE: The Cure give us an update on their “relentless” new album – and when to expect it

The new two-hour and 15-minute version of the film arrives hot on the heels of the band’s recent reissue of their classic album ‘Wish’.

Released in 1992, ‘Wish’ features the singles ‘Friday I’m In Love’, ‘High’ and ‘A Letter To Elise’. It reached Number One on the UK albums chart and Number Two on the Billboard 200 in the US.

Released on October 7, the 30th anniversary collection includes the full original album, which has been remastered by frontman Robert Smith and Miles Showell at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

It also boasts 24 previously-unreleased tracks – including demos, instrumentals and rare 12″ mixes – as well as four songs that will be coming to CD and digital platforms for the first time. The 3CD edition comes with four tracks from ‘Lost Wishes’, a 1993 mail-order only cassette, which have never been available on CD or streaming.

You can watch Play Out in full below. A synopsis reads: “Play Out follows the band as they perform new songs at a club gig, play Wembley Arena, appear on the Jonathan Ross show, rehearse for and perform their legendary MTV Unplugged show and receive the award for Best British Group at The Brit Awards.”

In terms of new music, The Cure kicked off their 2022 world tour in Latvia last month and debuted new tracks ‘Alone’ and ‘Endsong’.

The tracks were followed by further debuts including ‘And Nothing Is Forever’, ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ and ‘A Fragile Thing’ offering a sense of what to expect from forthcoming new album ‘Songs Of A Lost World’, which Smith said was “almost finished” back in May.

Speaking about what to expecting from the forthcoming new album, Smith told NME: “Essentially it’s a 12 track album. It’s there, it’s kind of half-mixed and half-finished. It’s a weird thing. It’s kind of evolved over the last two years. It hasn’t always been a good thing to have been left alone with it. You pick at it, like picking at seams, and everything falls apart.”

The Cure are currently on their UK and European tour – you can find remaining tour dates below and purchase remaining tickets here.

29/11/2022

Key figures from the music industry have demanded government action on streaming following the publication of a report by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today (November 29).

READ MORE: Streaming – what happens next? Artists demand “a shift in the way business is done”

At the beginning of this year, the CMA formally launched a new study to examine the music streaming market in which it considered “whether innovation is being stifled and if any firms hold excessive power”.

The findings were published today in a new report, which found that analysis “suggests it is unlikely that an intervention by the CMA would release additional money into the system to pay creators more”.

It continued: “The study does however highlight that the issues raised by creators could be further considered by government and policymakers as part of their ongoing work following the DCMS Select Committee’s inquiry into the economics of music streaming.”

Sarah Cardell, Interim CEO of the CMA, added that “while this report marks the end of the CMA’s market study”, it hopes that “the detailed and evidence-based picture we have been able to build of this relatively new sector will provide a basis that can be used by policymakers to consider whether additional action is needed to help creators”.

While George Freeman, current Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation, last year spoke about the need to make sure “all musicians are benefiting from the UK legal framework”, today’s report’s has sparked renewed demand for government action.

Annabella Coldrick, Chief Executive of Music Managers Forum and David Martin, CEO of Featured Artists Coalition, said in a joint statement: “The CMA report today focuses on how music streaming has benefited consumers and does not find that a competition intervention would be beneficial.

“However, it acknowledges that other issues raised by artists, songwriters and managers, including fair remuneration and transparency, require a different kind of scalpel. We welcome the overriding conclusion that Government and policymakers should be driving forward reform.

Today the Competition and Markets Authority (‘CMA’) has published its music and streaming market study final report. Read MMF & FAC's statement on the report. pic.twitter.com/VBnGGgpXuu

— Music Managers Forum () November 29, 2022

“This should put a renewed focus on the ongoing pan-industry work being led by the IPO, and ensure that this activity delivers tangible changes in areas such as improved remuneration (whether through ER, contract adjustment or rights reversion), better transparency and progress on song data to get the right people paid fairly and quickly.

“If these outcomes fail to materialise, then the MMF, FAC and other creator-led organisations will call on the Government to intervene and fulfil their promise of legislative action.”

Additionally, the BPI – the representative voice of independent and major record labels across the UK – said: “We welcome the CMA’s objective, evidence-based report which confirms that the streaming market is competitive – delivering fans accessible and affordable music and artists greater choice in an environment in which many more are succeeding and where artist and songwriter royalty rates have increased.

This morning, the published its music and streaming market study final report.

— BPI () November 29, 2022

“As the most definitive analysis of these issues to date, this report will help inform the work that we and industry are already doing in partnership with Government to further strengthen British music and ensure the UK remains competitive globally. The report reinforces our view that the most effective way to enable even more artists to have a sustainable career in music is for labels to keep investing in talent and grow the market.”

Graham Davies, Chief Executive of The Ivors Academy, echoed a similar sentiment: “The CMA has asserted that it is the Government’s responsibility to introduce policy interventions to support music creators. While consumers have never had it so good the system is concentrating earnings to an unsustainable extent.

“Streaming benefits consumers and rewards few music creators. The creative industries are central to the UK’s economic success and they rely on creators, but they are leaving the industry because of threats to live music, the disastrous impact of Brexit on touring and the cost of living crisis. We need action to fix streaming.”

Attempts for greater government regulation in streaming have, however, faced setbacks in the past. Back in December 2021, Kevin Brennan MP’s bill on reforming musicians’ remuneration – dubbed the ‘Brennan Bill’ – failed to make it through the House of Commons.

This year’s Spotify Wrapped is being teased by the streaming service ahead of its release.

READ MORE: Streaming – what happens next? Artists demand “a shift in the way business is done”

The personalised playlist, which enables users to look at their most-streamed artists, songs, albums, genres, playlists and podcasts over the course of 2022, was released on December 1 last year.

It is unclear at this stage when it is likely to drop this year, but it is rumoured to be either this Thursday (December 1) or Friday (December 2).

Since mid-October the platform has been teasing Spotify Wrapped when the streaming giant tweeted: “We want to see your Wrapped Top Artist predictions,” which garnered responses from fans eager to guess the artist they had streamed the most throughout 2022.

A week later, Spotify launched its new Your Wrapped Soundcheck’ feature which allowed artists to upload videos thanking their biggest fans on the streaming service, list their latest merchandise and ensure tickets for their upcoming shows were available on the platform.

Earlier this month, the streaming service also pulled Lizzo in to help with their campaign, by posting a gif of the singer beneath another tweet which read, “Turn up the music… it’s almost about damn time for .”

Yesterday (November 28), the imminent arrival of the personalised playlist was hyped up further with the Instafest app, which allows fans to put together a festival line-up poster based on their most-listened to artists on Spotify.

The app, which was created by University of Southern California student Anshay Saboo, allows users to choose their top artists from the last four weeks, or the last six months, that will feature on their personalised festival line-up.

There’s also an option for the line-up to feature your most listened-to artists of all time to give an overview of your whole time on Spotify. For more information on the Instafest app head here.

UK-based startup Joipaw is currently developing a series of video games for dogs.

READ MORE: Why ‘Dragonflight’ is a homecoming for ‘World of Warcraft’ fans

The games are currently being prototyped and so far include a version of whack-a-mole as well as a game where dogs have to choose which side of the screen has more bubbles on. Dogs play using a special, saliva-resistant touch-screen console, with treats being dispensed when the dog wins.

According to Joipaw, ”it all started with a puppy called Kawet and us wanting to keep him busy and happy when we weren’t home. Given our love for video games, outdoor activities and healthy lifestyles, it didn’t take long before Joipaw was born.”

“Our goal with this venture is to push for a better understanding and inclusion of dogs and animals in human societies by showing the world how intelligent they are,” the website continues.

While there’s no release date or recommended retail price, the console is available to reserve now for $6 (£5).

Speaking to Axios, Joipaw co-founder Dersim Avdar said that “the most difficult step” has been getting dogs to start playing without peanut butter on the screen but, when they do, it’s “the magic moment where you see the light in their eyes.”

Avdar went on to say that the console could have health benefits for dogs with Joipaw’s scientific advisor Clara Mancini saying that research into touch-screen brain games for dogs is young but “very promising.”

There are also plans for a global leaderboard with Avdar adding: “I can totally imagine dog esports.”

In other news, Warzone Caldera returned last night (November 28), after being taken offline on November 16 in preparation for the launch of Warzone 2.

However, the original Warzone is missing several features and maps that it used to have. Fortune’s Keep, Warzone‘s smaller map, has been removed – leaving only the Caldera map available to play.

Dwayne Johnson has claimed Warner Bros. were “inexplicably and inexcusably” against bringing back Henry Cavill as Superman.

Cavill reprised his role of Superman in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, setting up the character’s return in future DC projects.

READ MORE: ‘Black Adam’ review: Dwayne Johnson’s superhero debut is a dud

Speaking in a video shared on Twitter, Johnson outlined how he “fought hard” for Cavill’s return against the studio.

“At the end of the day the studio was not bringing Henry Cavill back, inexplicably and inexcusably,” Johnson said. “But we weren’t going to take no for an answer.”

The actor credits himself and Seven Bucks Productions co-founders Hiram and Dany Garcia for helping to convince Warner Bros. on the decision.

— Dwayne Johnson () November 23, 2022

He added: “This has been years in the making regarding bringing Henry Cavill back and years of strategic conversations, and we weren’t going to take no for an answer.

“Also, something else to think about is, for us there was no viable logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. It’s impossible to do.

“You can Venn diagram business wise this whole thing 90 different times but it all comes back to, ‘Where’s Superman?’ You have to have Superman in the mix. So that’s why we fought hard to bring Superman back, Henry Cavill.

“There was no other Superman by the way to bring back. Henry Cavill is our generation’s Superman and in my opinion, the greatest Superman, and I mean that respectfully to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve.”

Last month, James Gunn (The Su***de Squad) and Peter Safran were announced as co-chairmen and chief executive officers of DC Studios. The pair will oversee “the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across film, TV, and animation under a single banner”.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is the next film to be released from DC, which is scheduled for March 17, 2023.

The follow-up to 2016’s ‘Hardwired… To Self-Destruct‘ will arrive on April 14, 2023, with the European leg of the metal icons’ world tour – which includes the previously announced Download Festival headline slots – kicking off the same month.

The first taste of the new album, produced by Greg Fidelman, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, can be heard in relentless new single ‘Lux Æterna’. You can listen to it below.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the forthcoming new record’s name in a press release, frontman James Hetfield said: “72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”

The European leg of Metallica’s world tour will kick off in Amsterdam on April 27, 2023, making stops in Paris, Hamburg and Gothenburg throughout May and June, before continuing on North America. The band will then return to Europe for the second leg through May, June and July 2024, followed by further dates in North America.

The tour includes two nights in each city, promising a “no repeat weekend” of two different sets and two different opening acts. Support across the tour includes Architects, Mammoth WVH, Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, Pantera, Volbeat and Greta Van Fleet.

28/11/2022

Warner Bros’ future video games set in the DC universe will be connected to the franchise’s films and TV shows, according to filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.

READ MORE: ‘Gotham Knights’ review: the heroes Gotham deserves

The news comes from an exchange on Twitter, in which Gunn revealed that “the DCU will be connected across film and TV (and animation).”

When asked if this cross-media expanded universe would include future DC video games, Gunn responded with a simple “yes.”

This shared universe approach isn’t a huge surprise, as reports have already surfaced that David Zaslav, discovery head at Warner Bros had informed the wider company about their intentions to build a “bible for a cohesive DC universe,” including “live-action films, TV, animation, gaming and more.”

It should be noted that this policy applies only to future DC games, and is not applicable to games on the more immediate horizon. Rocksteady’s much-delayed Su***de Squad: Kill the Justice League is not expected to tie into a wider DC universe, and is instead connected Rocksteady’s Arkham universe, which began with 2009’s Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Gotham Knights. Credit: Warner Bros. Games.

It also does not apply to the recently-released Gotham Knights, from developer WB Games Montréal. Not that being disconnected from a wider DC universe hurt the game all that much – earning four stars in NME‘s review.

If anything, Gotham Knights suffered from its close association with the Arkham series. While the game is not canonical to that universe, the review points out that Rocksteady’s franchise nonetheless “casts a long shadow” over the game. Our review also notes that the game “feels a little cheap,” and “feels like it could have done with another few coats of paint.”

Still, despite some “pretty dodgy stealth sections”, the game ultimately impressed – with our review heaping praise on the game’s open world as well as its characters and narrative.

In other gaming news, Overwatch 2 has revealed the abilities of its next playable character, tank hero Ramattra.
