Do It Yourself - DIY?

Remember the times:

1) When you tried to replace your punctured bicycle tire by yourself, instead of bringing it to the workshop - just so that you can save money?

2) When you walked 5 miles to reach home, instead of taking Uber - just so that you can save money?

3) When you were tired but still cooked dinner at home, instead of eating out - just so that you can save money?

4) When you spent queuing up for 3 hours just to be among the first 100 customers for that new product launch that's going for 20% off - just so that you can save money?

First things first, this is not a financial advice.

Secondly, if you do all the above as a hobby, or just purely because you're passionate about them, then by all means, please do and don't ever stop.

Thirdly, we sincerely wish to make it clear that, we are not on the condescending end of rubbing things on your face, especially during tough pandemic times.

We're truly concerned if you hate doing those things - but end up doing them anyway - just to save yourself from forking out some money.

The biggest mistake that many people do in life - is to commit their time in return of money - or at least, that's what they think.

Let us explain...

Saving $30, while spending 3 hours of your time on a task that you'd probably not even do great at - simply because you're not passionate enough about - doesn't at all mean that you saved $30.

But instead, you just wasted 3 hours of your day.

Whereas, spending $30, while utilizing 3 hours of your time to do other things: side hustle, learn a new skill, exercise, read, etc. - will actually in return, be way beneficial.

Do it for a consecutive period of time, make it a habit, and then you're actually trading money for your time - which could ultimately make more money for you in the long run.

We just want you to know that nobody ever gets rich by saving money.

Instead, invest in yourself using time.

Time is your greatest asset at any point of your life, not money.

Yeah right, work hard they say.

It will pay off they say.

But, when?

They never did say...

The biggest problem with most people is that, they always seek for instant gratification when they work hard.

It's the same as when you pull an all-nighter, hoping that you'll be able to pass that test.

You burn several weekends to complete a crucial project, hoping that your boss will appreciate your effort.

You finally managed to pull through a Sunday for leisure with your family or friends, hoping that they will be able to understand your mental exhaustion and give you space on the next weekend.

Unfortunately, that's not how sacrifice works.

Because in reality, nobody really cares about your effort.

Hard work is not about you sacrificing today, doing the things you hate and knowing that you will be rewarded tomorrow.

Hard work is about you sacrificing today, doing the things you hate and NOT knowing when or how you will be rewarded - but you still pursue it anyway.

Now, what we'd like to emphasize here is - patience.

Time is the biggest factor that will determine the magnitude of your success, not your hard work.

Patience plus sacrifice over a period of time - be it weeks, months, years, or even decades - is the real hard work.

Many people are on time, be it at work or at school, but on the 5th minute onward, they are already slacking.

On their mind:
1) What's for dinner tonight?
2) What time is Man Utd playing Chelsea?
3) Why isn't there a text from my girlfriend/boyfriend?
4) Colleague wore a beautiful dress, let's talk about it for 20 minutes (sidetrack on other topics included)
5) Doctor appointment over the weekend, what should I prepare?

And, so on...

We agree, humans are very instinctive in nature.

But then, there are also many people who are able to suppress themselves for the bigger picture.

The real discipline:
1) Sort out your tasks at work without personal interruptions - CONSISTENTLY
2) Communicate with your colleagues without getting sidetrack - CONSISTENTLY
3) Finish your homework first, before going out for leisure - CONSISTENTLY
4) Focus on your lessons although you see other classes playing football in the field - CONSISTENTLY

Can you imagine yourself taking up a million dollars condominium bank loan or mortgage using your pay slip for loan approval?

Do you know how ballsy you have to be to do that?

Now, some of you may say that it's not even feasible - given your income.

We agree, not everyone is able to do that.

First things first - this is not a financial advice.

However, we'd like to point out that, lots of people really worry about getting themselves into high monthly commitments - even before COVID-19 existed.

However, when it concerns gym memberships, car loans, house rents, Netflix subscriptions, or other entertainment subscriptions, most people are really fine with it as they deem those as basic necessities.

Now, is it because the latter category costs way lesser than getting yourself a house or getting affiliated in the stocks market?

Do understand that one category is an asset, while another is a liability.

When you give yourself bigger bills to commit to, one thing you'll realize is that your drive to work and achieve greater things will be very different as compared to paying relatively smaller bills.

So, never be afraid to commit to something you think is farfetched.
