Yesterday I cried more than I have ever cried before. About two hours in floods of tears.
I had the privilege of visiting with my wife, Gwen Stirling Wilkie, the British Normandy Memorial.
There, early on a misty morning, we were the only visitors to an incredibly beautiful and respectful monument to the 1475 giants who were killed on 6 June, D Day and the thousands who were killed in the following weeks.
It was an incredible testament to the bravery of all those who participated as well as those who managed the logistics of getting hundreds and thousands into occupied territory.
It also showed nations fighting with nations to a greater purpose.
They did this so that Europe might be free of oppression.
The words of King George are particularly poignant “This time the challenge is not to fight to survive but to win the final victory for the good of all and for a world in which goodness and honour may be the foundations of life for men in every land”
