After the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban there is only one question arising from the Indian point of view it is, what will be India's role in the Taliban controlled Afghanistan. In the past India invested in Afghanistan to create a good infrastructure for the country. As a regional power in the region, India is the only stakeholder of the peace in Afghanistan. The Taliban took control of the whole of Afghanistan after United States President Joe Biden pulled out American troops from Afghanistan in a very chaotic decision. In the year 2000 after the 9/11 attacks, U.S.A decided to fight against the Taliban to establish a Democratic government, which now seems like a story of heaven for the Afghan people. In all of these things what India can do now? With monetary assistance from China and tactical support from Pakistan Taliban is going to be a major threat for India. So what are the options available for India?

Relations between India and Russia have been very old and historical and in tough times both the countries proved their friendship with each other. India and Russia have had better relations since 1947. Russia had assisted India in achieving its goal of economic self-sufficiency through investment in the areas of heavy machine-making, mining, energy production and steel plants. Russian influence in India has a long history and In August 1971, when India signed the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation with the Soviet Union. It was an expression of the common goals of the two countries. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a new treaty of peace, friendship and cooperation was adopted by both countries in January 1993. After that in 1994, the Bilateral Military-Technical Cooperation Agreement was signed. In 2000, the two countries started a strategic partnership. With this, the year 2017 was marked by both the countries as the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. We can easily get a glimpse of Russian influence in India from the pre-independence era. The deepest roots of this relationship go back to the early 20th century when India was under British rule and Russia was ruled by the Czars The Russian Revolution of 1905 inspired Indian freedom fighters. Mahatma Gandhi was also impressed by the similarities in the prevailing circumstances in Russia and India. He developed a close relationship with Russia and had a long correspondence with Leo Tolstoy. In recent time this historical old partnership is experiencing a rift when two-decade-old India-Russia annual summit was cancelled for the first time. The reason behind the cancellation of this summit according to both the governments was Covid-19 pandemic but the real picture is different.
