Uganda is ready to reopen its pandemic-bruised tourism sector with a live-streamed, virtual safari starting Tuesday.

The virtual tour, featuring six videographers and photographers traversing across the country, has been promoted by the Ugandan government to incentivize tourists, when many parts of the world have barely emerged from travel restrictions.

This project is going to be showcasing Uganda’s beauty. We are very excited about this because we need to get Ugandans to appreciate what we have as a country said Paul Ninsiima, sales manager at Uganda Wildlife Authority UWA a state owned conservation agency co-organizing the project.

The virtual tours prelude the planned reopening of Uganda’s sole international airport to commercial flights on Oct. 1, compared with its many neighbors who have already opened up their airspace.

Figures show the East African country could lose up to 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in tourism revenues because of the lockdown measures that started in late March and are now easing as the economy reopens.

The UWA in June started offering complimentary prices to domestic tourists. At reduced prices, Ugandans and foreign residents are free to enter any park in the country provided they follow the set Standard Operating Procedures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19.

continues to plague the world causing businesses to temporarily or permanently close and unemployment to increase. It has left many people confined to their houses in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus. The world has come to a standstill while waiting out the pandemic. Every country’s economy has felt the effect of the world’s new circumstances. The tourism and travel industries have faced detrimental consequences because stay-at-home orders and worldwide travel bans have completely halted travel. Like many countries, tourism in Africa has been greatly affected by the dramatic decrease in travel.

Many countries rely on the contribution that tourism and travel bring to their yearly GDP’s. Countries like Spain and Italy, whose tourism industries bring in annual GPA, have become economically vulnerable. The direct loss of annual GDP wounds a country’s economy and its growth. People begin losing their jobs or are unable to find jobs. Businesses close and people cannot get essential needs, which skyrockets poverty rates.

Tourism in Africa
Africa has always heavily relied on its foreign visitors. As of 2020 tourism in Africa is the second-fastest-growing tourism industry” in the world. In fact Africa was projected to have another record-breaking year. In Ghana’s tourism industry brought in almost $2 billion, providing 5.5% of the country’s GDP. Unfortunately disrupted the travel plans of millions. as a result, Africa lost billions of dollars. This has increased the continent’s economic vulnerability.

The United Nations says the pandemic could affect at least two million jobs across the continent, leaving many people unemployed and unable to support themselves or their families. The cancellation of tours and loss of revenue has forced many companies and attraction sites to close and lay off employees. For example, the touring companyTravel was forced to cancel its tours and eventually permanently shut down. Many Africans in the tourism industry have faced the same fate. They have no consistent income to get the basic necessities, causing a deeper plunge into poverty.

Virtual Safari Tours
A major area of tourism in Africa is its wildlife safaris. The United Nations World Tourism Organization found that Africa’s safari industry was worth $12.4 billion in and it has been increasing. But, countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, which have very prominent safari industries, are losing all the foreign tourists that were once coming to experience the natural wildlife and preservation. This has created an immense loss of revenue, hurting the continent’s economy and the thousands who work for the safaris.

In an effort to combat the declining economy because of decreased tourism in Africa, the continent has shifted to digital programs where people can see online virtual tours of African Safaris. These online safaris will allow the public to virtually experience the unique beauty of these luxury safaris from the comfort of their homes. Travel Companies WildEarth and andBeyond have partnered up to virtually stream popular South African Safaris’s like Ngala Singita Sabi Sand and Tswalu Kalahari. Along with the virtual tours, they offer Q&A’s with expert and special features like a 24-hour camera at a watering hole at Djuma Game Reserve.

Virtual Tourism
WildEarth has provided virtual tours since before but the pandemic has caused viewership to increase exponentially in the last couple of months bringing in nearly three million views a month. While the safari footage itself is free for people to enjoy, the companies and safari’s make money from merchandise, advertising and selling videos to broadcasters.

Virtual safari tours are not a complete replacement for tourism. However, they have become a new way for the tourism sector to generate some income during the pandemic. They have also allowed safaris companies to remain open and not have to fire employees or file for bankruptcy. Tourism in Africa has taken this small step in an effort to combat current economic struggles and keep the economy afloat and its citizens out of absolute poverty
