As the Chakwera led Government is trying to bring back this country on truck , it has been revealed that some NGOs from other countries are working in secret with local NGOs and opposition parties to remove the current Government from Power.

The KHALSA AID INTERNATIONAL is a good example of these NGOs from other countries , which are working with opposition parties with one goal of removing Chakwera from Power. The KHALSA AID INTERNATIONAL is operating illegally in this country. Today the KHALSA AID INTERNATIONAL was in Balaka district where it was welcomed by DPP Candidate , Mr John Bamusi who is also the Leader of FOCESE one of local NGOs. While in Balaka , the KHALSA AID INTERNATIONAL met with leaders of opposition DPP . These DPP leaders were given money and fertilizers. On Friday , the KHALSA AID INTERNATIONAL will be in Kasungu.

Chakwera's austerity measures getting plaudits across Africa

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera's austerity measures have won the hearts of many in Malawi and beyond.

President Chakwera announced some of the drastic measures his government has put in place to cut cost in a bid to fix the economy.

One of the measures which has received praises across Africa is the travel ban imposed on government official including himself until March.

Reacting to the news as reported by Africa Business Insider and Africs Facts Zone, a lot of people from different African countries commended President Chakwera for the move saying that it will help save some money to be used in Malawi's economy.

Iameri Oluwa from Ghana said: "This is what good governance looks like. Its an X-ray of policies that wear the human face in an inflationary economy. I hope countries like Ghana will find this inspirational."

Another who is only identified as Yours Truly commented: "Brilliant. These trips are costing exchequer a lot under the current dollar exchange rates."

Ukuchukwu from Nigeria said: "Great Job."

Killa from Ghana writes:"Nana should see this."

Omwamba from Zambia simply wrote: "He cares."

Apart from suspending foreign trips, President Chakwera also ordered that monthly fuel allocation to Cabinet Ministers, Principal Secretaries, Directors and heads of departments of government departments be cut by 50%.

The Malawi leader directed the Minister of Finance to increase salaries of civil servants during the mid year review to ease the cost of living.

President Lazarus Chakwera has arrived back home from Saudi Arabia and Egypt where he attended the Saudi-Arab-African Economic Conference and the 2023 Intra-Africa Trade Fair respectively.

Due to a downpour at the Kamuzu International Airport, Chakwera did not grant an interview to the media.

While in Saudi Arabia, Chakwera witnessed the signing of the $20 million Mangochi- Makanjira road deal between Malawi and the Saudi Fund for Development.

While in Egypt, Chakwera engaged Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah, who assured him that the bank will support Malawi’s export agenda by securing reliable markets for the country's goods and services.

One of the indigenous entrepreneurs in the motorbikes industry, Luthando Holdings, has, since the recent devaluation of 44%, displayed a remarkable posture of patriotism, aiding a case of why Government needs to support indigenous business with focused priority.

The Government, through the Ministry of Trade and Industry issued a statement cautioning traders against unjustified price hikes that would seek to take advantage of the situation and perpetuate exploitation on the citizenry. So far, it appears the government has found a true friend in Luthando Holdings who seems to advocate for welfare of consumers in the country through championing ethical business conduct.

The news of the devaluation induced a wave of price hikes across the transactions sphere with most traders adjusting their prices with 44%. But Luthando Holdings submits that in most cases, the price increases on most items are without justifiable basis and merely reflects an attitude of propensity to exploiting the poor.

He argues that, the business community has been accessing the forex at between K1,800 and K1,900 for US$ 1 and that recent announcement is a mere alignment to the economic reality, further stating that the business community has been merchandizing while factoring that rate.

Mr. Laher has relayed sentiments calling upon citizens to be careful in their attitude, informing that the business community will feel backed and engage an unjustified profiteering gear to the disadvantage of the local economy.

Addressing opposition-oriented people who have weaponized the devaluation for their political beating on the government, Laher had the following to say: “Don’t think you are punishing and bullying the leadership. You are doing yourself injustice and punishing yourselves”.

“I made a visit to Malangalanga this morning where I met fellow indigenous traders. We had some talk too, and we spoke about kwacha adjustment to dollar again. Everyone that I met accepted we have been sourcing dollar at about K1,900 way before and our price tag was based on the same. I pleaded with them that we should be cautious and consider our fellow citizens on price hikes. If anything, with the duty adjustment at least not more than 8% increase would be fine”.

“I told them that my fear is that in our economy, businesses are 85% controlled by foreigners. What this means is that if we accept that Kwacha has been devalued with 44% and prices be increased by 44%, the biggest winner is a foreigner, and few 15% of us the Indigenous Malawian traders. The biggest victim of all is the poor fellow indigenous citizen. This is not alright”.

“I asked my fellow traders to consider the plight of fellow citizens. Tiyeni izi tisapange nawo, ma foreigners awapweteka a Malawi, chifukwatu olo charger ndi head phone amagulisa pa mseu ija akwezanso, chifukwa kowoodako ma foreigners akwezanso when in natural fact, they are not supposed to”.

The local entrepreneur elevated his concern to the foreign business community. “warning to my fellow 85 % traders in Malawi. We know how businesses operates as we are all in the same industry. We know you don’t have any grounds to justify the price hike with 44%. You don’t have to adjust prices with 44%. Perhaps 6% would be justifiable. We know you have been purchasing your stocks at an equivalent of K1,900 for one Dollar rate all along”.

“We will do everything possible to prove that any price increase at 44% is unjust, genocide, an economic crime against humanity, fraud and taking advantage of Malawians’ ignorance. The only commodity that is supposed to be increased with 44% are those who have been importing through the banks at the TT rate as it is evident that they have an immediate direct impact from this alignment. These commodities include fuel and few other commodities”.

“Pomaliza to all our valuable clients and general public: Don’t accept to be duped. It is high time we needed to fix this country together. I read with poignant memories a story which is currently circulating in social media titled: Kabambe predicts further Kwacha depreciations.

In fact, as an apolitical but patriotic citizen of this country (currently residing in Phalombe), I am forced to comment on this devaluation saga after reading this shameless Kabambe story which is replete with non-remorse, deceit, as well as “usurp of political mileage.”

In this seemingly sponsored article, Mr, Kabambe, currently answering criminal charges owing to his deceitful behavior-is blatantly quoted as warning un suspecting Malawians to brace for tough times, saying that the Kwacha will continue to depreciate as it is currently below what he says “market equilibrium.”

Kabambe is also sending Malawians into panic mode as he also shamelessly and carelessly asserts that the country might plunge into a serious economic crisis with prices of goods likely to worsen.

Kabambe and team created all this:

As I write this, I am debating myself whether to express fierce anger or to uncontrollably laugh.This is because Mr. Kabambe is the one who threw innocent Malawians under the bus and today he is playing merrier and wants to portray an image of being a saint himself. What a snake in the grass.

As a matter of background, as far as I am concerned (as I am always kept abreast of current affairs), when Kabambe was Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor, sanctioned by his DPP government, he was at the helm of sugarcoating and misreporting the country’s foreign exchange position figures just to portray to the IMF that the country is performing well ‘economically.’

And Malawians must not forget that his was happening under the direct watch of this ‘sweet-talker’ whom many discredit his tenure of office at the central bank as they describe it as ‘worst’ in history of the country.That is a story for another day and beyond the scope of this article.

It is this same “holy” Kabambe who misreported several times on Gross Reserve Assets (GRA) and Net International Reserves (NIR), for the period 2018 to 2019, a lie which the IMF discovered later.

Suspicious with such DPP and Kabambe naughtiness, the IMF has over the past years been reluctant to resume its program, ECF that is always key in entrenching macroeconomic stability, preserve debt sustainability, and advance governance reforms among countries with protracted Balance of Payments (BoP) challenges.

Malawians, and I repeat Malawians listen to this: Due to this dishonest act, today, the current government is repaying (in foreign currency) millions of United States Dollars to the Afrexim Bank, just to collect the mess as Kabambe clandestinely and fraudulently borrowed in excess of $850 million from the Cairo-based Bank but such a foreign exchange transaction bypassed the IMF and was nowhere to be seen in the IMF books, let alone in RBM Balance Sheet.

It is such untruthful transactions that have plunged the country into this sorry state as the little foreign exchange which is being generated is being thinly allocated to importing strategic goods such as fertilizer and pharmaceuticals as well as repaying huge foreign currency denominated public debt such as that of Afreximbank which is legally and morally off-track.

By repaying such debts, the country finds itself in a serious vicious cycle as it is in dearth of the commodity, hence the recent devaluation which is a good panacea to collecting all the past fiscal imbalances created by Kabambe and team.

So, to have Kabambe standing on the podium today and playing or sounding innocence is a sheer act of disgrace, ignominy and a middle finger to 20 million plus Malawians. Kabambe should just patiently wait for his fate as the criminal case is in court and it is obvious that he will spend years in jail as a price to the unprecedented foreign exchange scandal he masterminded (at least from my knowledge as a bona-fide citizen of this country Malawi)

Seriously Kabambe is not offering any solution in this sponsored article but is trying so hard to induce panic among Malawians at the same time trying to win public sympathy as he positions himself towards the 2025 elections. He is no good option after all and is wasting his retirement coins.

I cry for my beloved Malawi as our country is full of gullible people who listen to every shred of lie and take it as gospel truth.But not the lie being propagated by Kabambe in social media.

The man has no single grain of morals to shamelessly churn out all this garbage and lies just to claim some space in the political landscape.

He is a biggest orchestrator of this economic malaise which the incumbent administration is undoubtedly and tirelessly fixing, 24/7.

He said aaah iwe Hendrix don't be naive how can we only increase prices with 7% when kwacha has been officially devalued with 44% and every citizen of this country is aware of this and they are already prepared on price increase and adjustment of about 44%, he emphasized Hendrix open your page and see, every Malawian says now prices for everything will go up 44%, so no one is going to complain, they will put all the blame to government not us, so let's increase prices.

I did not laugh off again as he sounded serious, I also became serious and ask him but are we doing the right thing taking advantage of official announcement when both you and I knows the truth, I told him I'm not increasing any of my products, I told him Malawians are so poor and misinformed, I would not dupe this Vulnerable human being, I will not be at peace with the poor Man's money so no.

The devaluation of the kwacha versus Malawi economy and people's welfare

_What does the devaluation mean to an ordinary person like me_

We have talked about understanding of issues that needs a lot of patience and prayers to provide the spirit of discernment.

This sermon now continues in the light of the devaluation of the kwacha which would see the kwacha trading against the dollar at almost MK1,770. This will be the official rate, on the black market the kwacha is already at MK1,880.

From an ordinary eye, this could be seen (and I will add understandably) devastating. But now if we look closely the kwacha was already operating in an over drive in as far as the back market is concerned.

Ask any serious business person would tell you that to get a dollar to finance imports or exports was already a nightmare not the official or what is called the cosmetic rate of MK1,770.

As one economist has said this is a necessary evil, the necessary bitter pill to heal the economy.

Now what would be said to be the benefits of this bold move by the President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera administration.

One this is clear that the devaluation reflects the true and market value of the Malawi Kwacha. As said earlier, the Kwacha already trades at 1,880 on the parallel market. The devaluation is necessary to rescue importers and exporters to pay the true value of the kwacha at MK1,770 instead of the MK1,880 as has been the case.

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) representing captains of industry has been making this call for some time on devaluation "to align the official value of the kwacha with the black market (read true) value.

Secondly, this devaluation spurs the journey to attainment of the IMF's Extended Credit Facility (ECF). Loathe it or love it but the fact is if approved, the facility unlocks $180 million immediately. Besides, this beckons multilateral & bilateral inflows (donor support) in millions of dollars who will now have confidence on Malawi following the IMF approval through the ECF.

This is a bold step, given the vegetative state DPP left the fiscus. This should be seen as a corrective to ailing economy, and unfortunately it is the only way out.

-The devaluation reflects the true & market value of the Malawi Kwacha. The Kwacha already trades at 1,880 on the parallel market.
-The devaluation was necessary and is the only medication to heal our ailing economy.
- Importers were already accessing the US$ at 1,880 for them to keep their businesses afloat. The devaluation is good for Business. MCCCI representing captains of industry has been making this call for some time & on evaluation this was seen to be sound.
- The devaluation spurs the journey to ECF, if approved, unlocks $180m immediately, besides, this beckons multilateral & bilateral inflows (donor support) in millions of dollars. This has not been happening, given the vegetative state DPP left the fiscus. This is corrective.
