He’s the patron saint of astronomers, the natural sciences, and the Archdioceses of Fuzhou in China. He’s credited for the mystical Rosary prayer and portrayed today as a supporter of the Inquisition, a violent campaign to eradicate all deviation, both religious and political, from the Christianity preached in Rome. The image is a hand-coloured woodcut c. 1473 depicting the genealogical tree of the Dominican Order. The founder, Saint Dominic with a star over his head, lies in the grass. From his side proceeds a vine on whose branches sixteen half-length figures of members of the order are, each named by a scroll. At the top of the vine stands the Virgin with the Child on her arm. Around St Dominic stand six further figures, including Saint Peter of Verona on the bottom left with a wound in his head to indicate his martyrdom by an assassin’s blade.
