SIMPLY SOUTHERN GOSPEL
TOP 40 CHART - MAY 15, 2024
CHART DETAILER / TOP 5 / CLOSER LOOK
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's, hope you had a great day! We're still sending a lot of prayers to all the folks dealing with this awful weather. Also we continue praying for all the upheaval in the world.
These last two weeks have been full of surprises to say the least - our listenership has increased substantially & voting has hit an all-time high. The charts have made some major shifts this charting period.
We've been asked a few process questions we’d like to address - Q:Why are your charts different from some of the others? A: Well, we move a little faster since we chart every two weeks, but mostly it’s because we’re following what our listeners want and like. Q:How do you determine the "Chart Positions"? A: That ties directly to the first question. We do not control or determine the chart positions, all we do is tabulate the listeners votes, it's just numbers. Some artists have large established fanbases, others are growing, but we find that for the most part our International audience has become a major factor in the voting, as a lot of them are unfamiliar with established artists in the USA, and literally vote for what they like (imagine that!?), and it does level the playing field. Q:Why are you not playing our song? A:Could be several reasons, 1.airplay standards. 2.doesn’t fit our format. 3.We simply don’t have it, or even know it exists. Artists need to put us on your new release distribution lists, or have their labels add us, we can’t play it if we don’t have it. It’s difficult for us to chase down every release.
So yes, we are bit different, but there's no political influence, no radio promoters, no ads to buy, no favors, no awards given (we believe that's for God to hand out later) - just raw votes from folks everywhere just like you. We're doing what God called us to do. We're not the biggest, the most listened too, or the most influential, we're just here to be all about our Father's business, and that's enough for us –
As we said, our charts move fast, so let's get to the Simply Southern Gospel Top 40 Charts for May 15th, 2024 ... and here we go...
Congratulations to The Allens/”Cross Over” for making an amazing four-point jump to the #1 position this cycle. The Allens also claimed the “Top Total Votes”, "Top Domestic Votes (USA)", “Top International Votes” & "Top Commented", a first for our charts here at Simply Southern Gospel - The Allens are on fire with our listeners. More about The Allens down the page in our "Top Five - Closer Look". Divinity Trio / "Child Like Faith" continues to hold their own amongst all the changes and even moved up one point to take the #2 spot (bravo). SouthBound / "Middle Of Nowhere" surged three points entering our Top Five this cycle at #3. It's good to have SouthBound back in our Top Five. After spending 2 weeks at #1, Avenue / "New Name Written Down In Glory" moved down to the #4 spot this cycle. Alas, spending 16 weeks on the charts is not an easy feat. Surging four points to the #5 position is Small Town Sunday / "The Days He Can Believe" rounding out our Top Five. We want to welcome Small Town Sunday to our Top Five, more about them as well below in our "Top Five- Closer Look"
“Top Mover” – No grass is growing under Peach Goldman's feet as their former #1 song (4 weeks @ #1) "Grace Will Lead You Home" is just making it's decent and is currently at the #10 spot, their brand new release "Storms I Never See" has jumped +12-points from #36 to #24 making their latest song our "Top Mover" this cycle - Other notable moves this cycle... well, we ought to all keep our eyes on Cyndi Reynolds/ "Mamas Prayers" as she jumps another +11-points from #19 to #8 into the Top Ten, Cyndi is now well poised to make some bold moves forward. Last cycles "Top Entry", the trio GloryWay / "The God Who Never Leaves" also took an +11-point jump from #34 to #23, FYI - this song has been gaining a lot of traction in the past week. Jumping +10-points this cycle is Legacy Five / "You Have Always Been My Shepherd" moving from #37 to #27, generating a lot of excitement from listeners.
Our “Top New Entry” for the May 15th, 2024 chart Is the new single from Jeff & Sheri Easter / ”Fall Into Place” entering the chart at ( #32). Other new entries this cycle include Sunday Drive / "Breaking Boundaries” at ( #34) & The Lore Family/”God Said You're Gonna Make It” at ( #39).
** Yet another nod to The Allens/”Worship The King” as the former #1 song (4 Weeks @ #1) is STILL hanging on at #40 and has now spent an astonishing 24 Weeks on Simply Southern Gospel’s Top 40 Chart (Wow!)! "Worship The King" has officially set the record for our longest charting song to date on Simply Southern Gospel! Congratulations!

TOP 5 / CLOSER LOOK / May 15, 2024
#1 The Allens/”Cross Over”
Congratulations to The Allens / "Cross Over" as they take the top spot at #1 this cycle in a very big way! Sweeping the Top "Top Takes" is not an easy thing to do: "Top Total Votes"-"Top Domestic Votes (USA)" -"Top International Votes" & "Top Commented" which is the first time that has ever happened here at Simply Southern Gospel! - I guess according to our listeners, The Allens are TOPS. In only 8 weeks, The Allens / "Cross Over" entered our chart on March 15th 2024 at #33 and obviously caught a strong tailwind and rode it all the way to #1! The Allens also have a fantastic music video of the hit song "Cross Over" that was professionally filmed on location all over the historic Holy land in Israel (see Video) The Allen guys took the lead this round, and their vocal acrobats in the song "Cross Over" are quite dynamic with a wonderful blend of a traditional quartet sound, with a real progressive twist. From the comments we've received The Allens have apparently achieved a sound with this song that appeals to a vast & diverse audience. Geraldine Herndon of Brandon FL USA wrote: "I had your station on in the car with my 17 yo son Cory, he was groaning at some of the music (not a Southern Gospel fan) when "Cross Over" came on, his demeanor changed, he said "This is pretty good" (that's a huge compliment coming from him). Then Cory said "who are they" and I pointed at the radio, and he said "hmm, I'll have to remember them" and then he said "they're proof that all Southern Gospel Music isn't stuck in 70's", and I said "no, it's proof that your taste in music is improving and that you need to pay attention" - he downloaded the song! lol" - Cory Herndon of Brandon, FL USA responded: "I know my mom wrote in and yes I did download the song. No disrespect to anyone, but my mom still plays stuff from cassettes, I was just happy that she was listening to new stuff. I got to say The Allens have it going on, she can play them in the car! lolol" - SSG: come on Cory, give your Mom a break, she deserves it I'm sure, and it is her car 😊 - Mindy Hagel of Dresden Germany shared: "Love The Allens music, their latest album is excellent, love your station!" - Wes & Carol Robar of Port Arthur TX USA: "We listen to your station, we like that it's mostly music and we love The Allens" - Dana Belesanto of Utica, NY USA added: "one of the best groups I've heard, I'm a fan" - SSG: "We are fans too Dana" - So, for those out there wondering where The Allens go from here?... obviously you haven't heard their new CD "Kingdom Come" which contains "Cross Over", "Worship The King" and maybe another 5 or 6 hit songs, maybe more! Get yourself a copy, and stay up to date with The Allens by visiting their website @: www.AllenMinistries.com
#2 Divinity Trio/”Child Like Faith”
In the midst of all the changes and chaos in the Top Five this cycle, Divinity Trio / “Child Like Faith" has continued to hold their own and even moved up one spot to the #2 position. Folks really like this song as the votes and comments have been both strong & steady. Glenna Petree of Macon GA USA wrote: "Love this song so much" - Holly Rutherford of Gallatin TN USA said: "Their CD is really good, this is one of favorites, so glad you guys are playing it" - Andy Reneau of Petersburg VA USA shared: "I loved all the comments from the last chart, the song made me feel good all day as well" - Barry Gallo of Bloomington IL USA added: "I'm voting for my wife Sarah, she loves this song!" - SSG: Hi Barry tell Sarah thanks for voting, and can we hire you too! lol - So, the way things have been moving lately, there's no predicting what will happen next, but Divinity Trio is solidly sitting at #2 with all the possibilities on the table. So we encourage all of you Divinity Trio fans to see this as motivation, and that you need to get to voting! 😊 - Learn more about Divinity Trio, their tour schedule, music, ministry and so much more by visiting their website: www.DivinityTrio.com
#3 SouthBound/”Middle Of Nowhere”
Jumping three spots to the #3 position this cycle is SouthBound / "Middle Of Nowhere". As we said earlier, it is good to have SouthBound back in the Top Five again. The last time they visited here was back in November of 2023 when they dominated the 4 weeks of November at #1 with their hit "Somebody Testify". We still have new listeners voting for that song, it was a strong #1. "Middle Of Nowhere" is a great song that comforts the listener with the message that God will meet you where you are even if you're in the middle of nowhere. SouthBound's vocals are always awesome, and this song is no different. Kira Wallinger of Lafayette IN USA wrote: "This song soothes my soul and lifts my heart, especially when I'm feeling alone and lost" - Bradly Overstreet of Carlisle PA USA shared: "Southbound is probably my favorite, love that you play them often" - Sueann Gallagher of Greensboro NC USA said: "SouthBound picks such moving songs, this is another example of how God uses them, each song speaks to a different issue. So talented" - Christian Bauman of Berlin German added: "Great song, great vocals, here's my vote" SSG: We heard rumors that SouthBound has been in the studio working on a new CD (exciting), but there are so many great songs to go on this one!!! #4 Avenue/”New Name Written Down In Glory” – (2 Weeks @ #1)
After spending 2 weeks @ #1, Avenue / “New Name Written Down In Glory” moved down to #4 this cycle. “New Name Written own In Glory” has spent 16 weeks on the charts, which is a feat in itself. There was a slow and steady climb up the charts for Avenue, and at the top of the chart they faced Peach Goldman / “Grace Will Lead You Home” who were two weeks ahead of them at #1 and held that #1 spot for 4 weeks. The charts have been heavy with new music, not to mention highly competitive and tight. Avenue has become a favorite with Simply Southern Gospel listeners, we’ve been playing them since we started. Because of their progressive abilities Avenue is also very popular on our sister station God’s Music Today! where “New Day Written Down In Glory” peaked at #7. Comments still rolling in: Jolene Manion of Aiken SC USA wrote: “we LOVE Avenue in our house!” – Donnie Nicholson of Denham Springs, LA USA shared: “I like their blend of southern and contemporary sound, it’s hard to pull that off” – Lori Kensington of Grand Prairie TX, USA added: “I love this song, I know it’s a cover, but they did it so well!” SSG: we think so too Lori and thank you for voting! – Studio rumors are also out there about a new CD for Avenue (looking forward to it) – but we’re not sure when a new song will be released. Just know that when it makes an appearance, you will hear it on Simply Southern Gospel for sure! Check out their schedule and what’s happening with Avenue by visiting their website at: www.AvenueMusic.net
#5 Small Town Sunday /”The Days He Can Believe”
Small Town Sunday / "The Days He Can Believe" jumps four spots to #5 rounding out our Top Five. This is Small Town Sunday's first time in our Top Five, and we welcome them to the party! Small Town Sunday / "The Days He Can Believe" began their journey on Simply Southern Gospel entering on the March 15, 2024 chart at #35. On the April 1, 2024 Chart, they had moved to #26. On the April 15th, 2024 chart Small Town Sunday gained some serious traction and became the "Top Mover" that cycle by gaining +12-points surging from #26 to #14. On May 1, 2024 Small Town Sunday shot into the Top Ten to the #9 position. Today, on May 15th, 2024 we saw "The Days He Can Believe" jump four spots to sit at #5 on Simply Southern Gospel Top 40! Small Town Sunday is a more a Christian Country band, but Christian Country & Southern Gospel have always been close kin and are woven from same fabric. Small Town Sunday is a relatively new group with two other successful releases, "That's What I Love About Sunday" & "Grew Up On That". They have an edgy sound that grabs your attention, but can also deliver a beautiful smooth blend, they have a definite recognizable sound that brings them to the forefront. Our listeners responded with votes and comments, here's a few: Clark Van Dorn of Sedalia MO, USA wrote: "I've been following Small Town Sunday and I like where they're headed with this song, that's why I voted" - Tricia Barone of Daytona Beach FL USA said: "I have those days too, this song knows me. I look forward to hearing them in person" - "Ken Jordan of Billings MT USA added: "I really like their sound, hoping to see a CD soon" - SSG: Patience Ken, we have to wait too! lol, but we're sure they're working on it. From what we've already heard it will most certainly be worth the wait. - Learn more about Small Town Sunday, their tour schedule, ministry and all the happenings by visiting their website @: https://smalltownsunday.com/
