IN 1938... THEY ARRIVED.

The teaser trailer for our upcoming period scifi short film, THE BATTLE OF GROVERS MILL, has just touched down.

Based on "The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells and the infamous radio play by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air, the film follows an an aspiring journalist who is faced with a larger than life threat after news of a strange crash-site in his home town comes over the radio.

Our new short film, "The Door Dinger", will be screening at Movie Madness all three days! Come check it out!

The results of the very first DIRECT TO VIDEO FILM FESTIVAL are coming to the Movie Madness Miniplex this weekend! 20 filmmaking teams had 48 hours to create a short film based on a given theme (“Something weird”) and prop (a VHS tape provided by Movie Madness). The results are now compiled and ready to be shared with the world!

On Friday you can view a 45-minute block of all the shorts that won DTV awards. On Saturday and Sunday, you can experience all the submissions in one beautiful 2 hour blob. From a doomed love story between obsolete robots, to a clown-filled journey into corporate dystopia, to the harrowing tale of a movie return gone terribly wrong, these 20 films perfect capture the creativity, passion, innovation, and profound weirdness of Portland’s filmmaking community.

Benjamin Rome (he/him) is a frequent collaborator of Ghoul Capone Pictures whose first film credit was an early collaboration with co-founder Nolen Sternkopf, “Hair-Girl”, where he participated as the Director of Photography. After working with Nolen on several other projects including our films “Fire Hill” and “Rotten Shadows”, Benjamin is excited to continue helping film as well as color grade for Ghoul Capone and stretch his creative muscles in the face of new challenges.

Benjamin Rome will graduate in the Spring of 2023 with a dual B.S. of Computer Science and Business Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate NY. He graduated from Sherwood High School in 2019 and was an active member of the Sherwood Percussion Ensemble doing both outdoor marching band shows and indoor winter percussion competitions.

Benjamin works professionally as the Principle Software Developer at Guidance Analytics and hopes to improve the world one line of code at a time. As a hobbyist, Benjamin is currently the Team Principle of Rensselaer Motorsport where he focuses on overall team management and direction while driving very fast race cars.

Up and coming engineer Ben Kroon (he/him) has been working with the founders of Ghoul Capone Pictures on visual effects for their short films ever since they attended high school together. His most recent vfx work can be seen in Fire Hill, where he provided touch-up effects in post-production. But it's not all behind the scenes for Ben! Nic Nipp (he/him) is a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and award winning arranger specializing in film as well as choral composition. But that’s not all! In addition to music, Nic is interested in other aspects of film such as writing, acting, and directing. When asked for a bio, Draven Ford (he/him) gave us these four moving words, "I am a filmmaker." Draven is the director of photography behind the beautiful visuals of Rocky is Dead as well as Rotten Shadows' leading actor starring as paranormal detective, Matthew Carrianne. He is also known for being the director and mastermind behind Pâques (or the Greatest Easter Film of unexpected virtues of ignorance). While away from the camera, Draven spends his time jamming out as a founding member/bass player of the Portland Oregon based band, Cereal, and chowing down on the freshest noodles he can find.

Meet Skylar Smith, the illustrator and key member of the Ghoul Capone team who designed our production house logo! In addition to working extensively with us behind the scenes to create posters and storyboards for our films, Skylar often appears on camera in both leading and supporting roles. She will soon feature in Fire Hill as well as Rotten Shadows and is currently in the midst of developing her own horror-western comic book called Lucifer Land. Nathan Stafford (they/she/he) is a writer/director/actor/comedian and— you guessed it— a founding member of Ghoul Capone Pictures. Nathan has been making movies since childhood, but the movies only became semi-watchable upon teaming up with cofounders Nolen Sternkopf and Drew Crosby in high school-and even then that’s debatable (they’re good now though, promise). Nathan went on to graduate with a degree in cinema from San Francisco State University in 2021, and now they have been unleashed into the real world. Society may never recover. Nathan’s college thesis film Head Scientist is coming soon to festivals and beyond, while pre-production continues on their fantasy musical The Huntresses of Dragonrock. Nathan’s biggest influences include the likes of Peter Jackson, John Waters, Angela Robinson, Wes Craven, The Wachowskis, Daniels, and the cast of Jackass. Nathan spends way too much time watching movies, and especially loves q***r cinema, blockbuster spectacles, musicals, and schlocky horror flicks where people’s insides fall out.

Nolen Sternkopf (he/him) is a writer/director/editor and another one of Ghoul Capone Pictures’ founding members-- go figure. Nolen has been making films since he was 14, initially collaborating with Nathan and teaming up with Drew soon after. In 2021 he graduated from San Francisco State University with a bachelor's degree in Cinema. Nolen's biggest inspiration is Sam Raimi, who he refuses to shut up about, and some of his favorite movies include Ghostbusters, Dawn of the Dead and Spider-Man 2. Nolen's own recent works include his SFSU thesis film, Fire Hill, a crowdfunded micro-feature, Rotten Shadows, and more soon to come!

Drew Crosby (he/him) is one of Ghoul Capone Pictures’ founding members! Drew got to know his cofounders Nolen and Nathan in high school where their first effort filmmaking as a trio was a driver’s ed class project. After that, these three worked together on such short films as Night Lights, Officers of the Deceased, and Hair-Girl. Drew recently directed, wrote, edited, and produced Rocky is Dead which has been featured in two short film festivals so far. A number of films Drew acted in such as Fire Hill are releasing soon as well, and in 2023 he will be graduating from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Film. Drew’s favorite movie is Swiss Army Man but he copied that from Nathan. Some other main influences for his work include What We Do In The Shadows, Shrek: Retold, Palm Springs, Hellboy II, the original trilogy (of Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies), and Joe’s Apartment. In conclusion he would also like to add, “Hi Mom!”

"Rotten Shadows" is a horror-noir film directed by Nolen Sternkopf that stars Draven Ford, Skylar Smith, Nicolas Nipp and Robert Taylor. The film is currently in post production and will be debuting at festivals later this year!

This pulpy supernatural tale follows a down on his luck paranormal investigator who takes on a case that could put his team and his life in grave danger.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today we’re sending love to McMinnville Short Film Fest for selecting “Rocky is Dead” to play in their 11th Annual festival’s College Student Showcase last Thursday. It was incredible to witness our crew’s first film as Ghoul Capone Pictures playing on the big screen with an audience as well as to meet fellow filmmakers after the show.
