Yangon/Taipei – Former British ambassador to Myanmar, Vicky Bowman, and her husband, Htein Lin, have been sentenced to one year in prison for immigration offences following a trial in Yangon, a diplomat with knowledge of the matter said.

Bowman and her husband Htein Lin, a renowned Myanmar painter and former political prisoner, were sentenced on Friday following their arrest in Yangon last week for immigration offences.

Myanmar’s military regime has handed one-year prison sentences to Britain’s former ambassador to Myanmar, Vicky Bowman, and her husband, Ko Htein Lin, a renowned artist and former political prisoner, for breaching the Immigration Act.

A court in Yangon’s Insein Prison held a summary hearing for the couple on Monday and made the verdict on Friday, according to prison sources.

They were arrested on August 24 at their Yangon home and taken to Insein but later transferred to police custody.

The court charged Bowmen for “staying in a family home in Kalaw Township, Shan State, rather than living at the Yangon address where she has originally registered with the authorities” while her husband failed to report his wife’s stay in Kalaw, in Shan Counties, which are to be renamed ‘ Eastern Region ’.

The act carries up to five years in prison. Myanmar authorities are lenient as Vicky Bowman is English by citizenship.

It transpired that Vicky Bowman was a member of the Executive Committee of Britain-Burma Society, of which the Crown Prince Shwebomin of Burma is a life member.

Htein Lin had an art exhibition in London about two decades ago and His Royal Highness was the Guest of Honour.

HISTORICAL FACT
Innsein Prison was built to imprison the gallant Burmese fighters against English colonialism during the years of Burma’s subjugation.

It has the capacity for 5000 inmates.

It is an irony that Vicky Bowman ends up in the institution her ancestors built to imprison the Burmese.

David Cameron in plot against Boris: Former Prime Minister met with Oliver Dowden weeks before he stepped down as Tory Party chairman fuelling concerns rebels are bidding to 'destabilise' Johnson's leadership
The scene was an elite private members' club in Mayfair with a well-established reputation for anti-Boris plotting. Cocooned in an upstairs room at 5 Hertford Street were Oliver Dowden, then the Chairman of the Tory Party, and his friend, the former Prime Minister David Cameron.

So when Mr Dowden resigned in the early hours of Thursday morning, in the wake of the double by-election defeats in Wakefield and in Tiverton, it was seen as a 'Cameroon plot'. Mr Dowden worked for Mr Cameron as an adviser and deputy chief of staff.
The sighting of Mr Dowden with Mr Cameron at the £2,850-a-year club has fuelled concerns within No 10 that a Cameroon clique, including former Chancellor George Osborne, and backed by allies of his successor in Downing Street, Theresa May, is plotting to 'destabilise' the Prime Minister.
The Mayfair club is where Ministers and young royals rub shoulders with Hollywood actors. Prince Harry and Meghan had their first date there and the club has also been used by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to host 'Biz for Liz' events with potential financial backers for her expected leadership bid.
A senior Government source said of Dowden: 'He's on the Cameroon side of the party, and he's got his revenge in early.'
And one Cabinet Minister questioned the former Culture Secretary's loyalty, saying: 'He never wanted to be party chairman, he wasn't any good at being party chairman, he was annoyed about being sacked from DCMS for Nadine [Dorries]. He only backed Boris after a lot of soul-searching and always harboured significant reservations about him.' Another Minister said: 'I'm sure they [the Cameroons] have all been sitting around a dinner table in Chipping Norton pontificating.'
The source close to Mr Cameron insists the former Prime Minister was not trying to 'destabilise' Mr Johnson.

U Thaung was a prisoner of Fargoung ShuMaung, self-named NeWin, which is a nom de guerre, His imprisonment lasted 10 years, reportedly.
Our research reveals something nobody knew - until now.
U Thaung was the editor, owner, or owner as well as editor of KyawHmon, which means ‘mirror’ in English. It was a very popular newspaper that provided a critique of government regularly; in a sense, it was a proper newspaper, far superior to the writings of the treasonous self-styled journalist of ‘Irrawaddy’.
We are not certain about his status - editor or owner. We believe ti was critical of the BSPP (Burmese Socialist Programme Party) of Fargoung ShuMaung. The paper was shut down, we believe. We need researchers to track the development of media in Burma.
It should be a government-finance independent undertaking.
U Thaung came to London with his young wife in 1988 or 1989. He had an audience with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Shwebomin of Burma to seek advice on the documents on colonial Burma and the royal genealogy. U Thaung was looking for the Indian Office library, which is now an integral part of the British Library.
His Royal Highness had visited that library a few times and knew its location. Thus, HRH was able to guide U Thaung to the location where he was to find the documents.
It is not known who else U Thaung met during his London visit.
He returned to Florida, USA, where he lived - and died.
He wrote a book, in which he described a stone tablet engraved with ‘ I, the free, will free those from bondage’, a proclamation of Emperor Anawyetta of the Frist Burmese empire. That is the essence of Burmese kingship!

Her father is a commoner; the name Bellamy suggests his ancestors are Irish convicts transported by the English colonists to populate Australia with white people. ShuMaung tried to be royal by marrying a half-caste woman June Rose Bellamy and even tried to carry out the rituals in the dead of night to make himself king, it was rumoured. He died in anonymity, under house arrest. We need more research on his demise.
Before we digress too much, we must conclude that Fargounf shuMaung was evil and he bankrupted Burma, with the consequences leading to today’s troubles. The only redeeming feature of ShuMaung's rule is the nationality law, which does not allow illegal Bengi immigrants to Burmese nationality.
U Thaung was a noble man, courageous and patriotic.

Rwanda deportations: Asylum seeker claims he was hit, kicked and pushed before deportation flight
The 25-year-old told Sky News he was threatened with being tied up if he moved "too much" and once he arrived at the airport he saw his friends with their feet bound.
"They hit us, kick us and they push us through doors," he added.
Zahir said he was then put inside a van and told that if he moved "too much", they would "tie" him up.
"When we got to the airport, I see my friends. They had tied their feet - the four of them (security officers) had tied them up," he said.
The 25-year-old had travelled 3,500 miles through Turkey and Europe after fleeing Iraq, mostly in the back of a lorry organised by human traffickers.
He eventually arrived in Calais, where he spent nine days before crossing the English Channel to reach the UK.
Less than a month later, he was informed by officials that he would be one of the first people placed on the deportation flight.
The plane was expected to leave for Rwanda on Tuesday night but was stopped after the European Court of Human Rights issued injunctions to prevent the migrants from being deported just 40 minutes before take-off.

On the right is the very real Crown Prince Shwebomin of Burma. The picture is older than 2 years, from a newsletter of the Royal Burma Society of Great Britain; well before the military coup of 1 February 2021. U Kyaw Zwar Minn was a very good ambassador, who was always invited to the functions of RBS of GB at 4-star hotels in London.

The ‘first stage’ of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is now complete, according to a top Russian general.

Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy, first deputy chief of Russia's General Staff, said at a briefing on Friday, “In general, the main tasks of the first stage of the operation have been completed. The combat potential of the armed forces of Ukraine has been significantly reduced, allowing us, I emphasise again, to focus the main efforts on achieving the main goal - the liberation of Donbas.”

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had said the war was going “according to plan”.

This comes even as Russia’s advances appear to have stalled around Ukraine’s Kyiv and Kharkiv. Additionally, several Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine since the war began. As per a CNN report, Russia has also failed to achieve air superiority in Ukraine.

At the briefing, Rudskoy said that 1,351 Russian military personnel have been killed in Ukraine so far and 3,825 wounded. However, as per Nato, up to 15,000 Russian troops have died in the war.

‘LIBERATING’ DONBAS
Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy emphasised on Friday that Russia’s goal is to ‘liberate’ the Donbas region of Ukraine.

Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy said, “The public and individual experts are wondering what we are doing in the area of the blockaded Ukrainian cities. These actions are carried out with the aim of causing such damage to military infrastructure, equipment, personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the results of which allow us not only to tie down their forces and prevent them from strengthening their grouping in the Donbas, but also will not allow them to do this until the Russian army completely liberates the territories of the DPR and LNR."

DPR and LNR refer to the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, separatist regions of Donbas in eastern Ukraine that Russia recognised prior to the invasion.

"Initially, we did not plan to storm them in order to prevent destruction and minimise losses among personnel and civilians. And although we do not exclude such a possibility, however, as individual groupings complete the tasks set, and they are successfully solved, our forces and means will be concentrated on the main thing -- the complete liberation of Donbas,” Rudskoy said.

Although the Russian military has claimed it is not targeting civilians, there is overwhelming evidence that suggests the opposite.
