As in other Urartian fortresses, water supply and drainage systems were carefully thought out and organized in the Erebuni fortress. The water supply to the fortress was provided by an underground gravity water supply made of round stone pipes that fit together. The outer diameter of the pipes was 40 cm, the inner diameter was 10 cm, the joints between them were sealed with clay.

Erebuni was founded by the king of Urartu Argishti I in 782 BC. e. as a stronghold for the consolidation of the Urarts in the Ararat valley. Due to the fact that Erebuni was located inside Yerevan, as well as linguistic evidence that, when translated from Armenian, Erebuni and Yerevan have a very close semantic meaning, namely “father’s residence”, Erebuni is identified with Yerevan, counting 782 BC. e. the year of foundation of Yerevan. After the decline of the city in the IV century BC. e., up to the III century A.D. e. there is no evidence to indicate the existence of a significant settlement on the site of Yerevan.

On October 25, 1950, during exploration work, the Armenian scientist K.L. Oganesyan discovered two basalt stones covered with cuneiform.
