In 1899, Jean Sibelius was already considered Finland’s greatest composer, but the work that would soon come to be known as Finlandia was what put him on the world stage.
That year, Sibelius created a seven-movement musical suite for an event that masqueraded as a celebration of Finnish history, but which actually advocated freedom of press and national independence.
