Current research provides compelling evidence that some animals likely feel a full range of emotions, including fear, joy, happiness, shame, embarrassment, resentment, jealousy, rage, anger, love, pleasure, compassion, respect, relief, disgust, sadness, despair, and grief.
The level of intelligence or stupidity of a society is clearly expressed in the way it treats animals.

MONKEYS SAYING WHAT´S UP TO EACH OTHER... JUST LIKE HUMANS?
In the abstract: "ASSESSING JOINT COMMITMENT AS A PROCESS IN GREAT APES" (august 2021), a group of scientists have established that bonobos and chimpanzees in grooming social activities say hello and goodbye to each other... yes, just like humans.

Animals are sentient. THE DEFINITION OF SENTIENT IS “ABLE TO PERCEIVE OR FEEL THINGS”. Today most of us would say that animals also feel emotions, form attachments and have own personalities.
Yet for many decades the idea of animals feeling emotions or having personalities was dismissed by behavioural scientists. This highly non-empathic view is supposed to have been popularized by the 17th century philosopher René Descartes’ alleged assertion that animals are without feelings, physical or emotional. René... you were so wrong!

Planet Zabor is a science fiction comic series about animal consciousness and sentience.
Roughly speaking some 2-3 million years ago, we humans were frightened hominids (kind of apes) surrounded by stronger animals that could easily have exterminated us.
But we won the survival battle of evolution and we ended in the top of the food chain. The once afraid hominids are now the kings of Planet Earth. We, humans, eat the animals we need or like to eat.
Now… imagine a faraway planet with 2 suns emitting a pinkish light to which humanoid eyes never adapted to. But pigs, yes… they adapted to that pinkish light and evolved into the master species of the planet. Humanoids are eatable animals called “krrunchos”.
The story begins with a trivial theft police investigation at a hatchery of krrunchos. But then things develop in unexpected ways.

Planet Zabor is sentimental and cruel, intellectual and violent – and has some rough scenes (16+). You can download Book 1 now, for free on the Planet Zabor website.

A good reading recommended by Planet Zabor: THE FEELING OF LIFE ITSELF", 2020.
Neuroscientist Christof Koch is chief scientific officer at the Allen Institute for Brain Science.
According to Koch, consciousness arises within any sufficiently complex, information-processing system. All animals, from humans on down to earthworms, are conscious - that's just the way the universe works.

THE CAMBRIDGE DECLARATION ON ANIMAL CONSCIOUSNESS

In July 7 - 2012, a prominent group of scientists; cognitive neuroscientists, neuropharmacologists, neurophysiologists, neuroanatomists and computational neuroscientists gathered at The University of Cambridge, signed the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness.

This declaration stated that not only humans, but also a significant amount of animals, including not just vertebrates but also many invertebrates, are conscious beings.

"We declare the following:

The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states. Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors.

Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Nonhuman animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these neurological substrates.”

This means: Animals are conscious and sentient. They register what happens to them and have mental states which can be experienced as positive or negative for them. Exactly as humans do, they experience suffering and happiness,

The evidence to support this claim is overwhelming.

THE DELUSION OF ANIMAL NON-INTENTIONALITY
We call this wonderful animal OCTOPUS MARGINATUS.
In this photo by Nick Hobgood we see how it protects itself carrying two shells. Just as a human being would do to protect him/her-self under dangerous survival conditions.
This is just one of the uncountable examples of intentional animal behavior.
The conception that animals have no intentional behavior has had gruesome consequences: it has reduced animals to “things” with no mind that humans can treat in the cruelest ways.
Studies show octopuses are quite intelligent beings.

Science says that, like all animals, humans are the result of a development

from elementary forms of life. It is then not illogical to conclude, that the

sense of "I" in a stream of consciousness already existed in those

elemental organisms from which it gradually developed - and it did not

appear suddenly or by chance in humans. Thus, each living entity senses

its own form of "I".

To be alive is to be unique.

Without that individuality of being alive, there would be no drive to survive and reproduce.

THE BACKGROUND

The first idea behind Planet Zabor was an article about the consciousness and sentience of animals.
But an article in an animal friendly web page would most probably attract people who already shared similar points of view.
So why not make use of one of the most versatile communication tools, that can boost any literary genre with a graphic expression: THE COMIC.

THE STORY
We try to avoid spoilers.
In Planet Zabor the battlefield of the survival of the species, the inexorable evolution, has crowned a winner: The Zaborians.
Humanoids are called “krrunchos”; an inferior, eatable species that never adapted to the pinkish light of the planet´s two suns.
Planet Zabor is a theocracy ruled by Holy Judges, who enforce the law according to the commandments of the Zaborian God.
Zaborians believe they have a natural right to use their planet's other species at their behalf. That's a privilege of being on top of the food chain of evolution.
Of course not all Zaborians are deep devouts of the official beliefs, just as in our planet.
The presentation song says: "You may say it sounds like humans, but then think again!

This series of stories in strange Planet Zabor begins with a police investigation in a working place.
Police Inspector Zazo and his longtime friend and assistant Tomko are called to a big hatchery of krrunchos to find a thief among the workers.
Krrunchos are a pleasure to eat, so it's most probably that some worker smuggled the 2 krrunchos home.
Zazo and Tomko are tough policemen (you will better see that in Book 2) and consider this a job below their professional level. Soon their attention goes to Duna, a female worker who moves all around the hatchery.
According to Zaborian law krrunchos are animals that must not be hold as house pets. Besides these animals are a Zaborian deli. So it's logical to deduce that the suspect, worker Duna, has already eaten those animals.
Zazo has a conversation with his girlfriend Ninola, about this silly case, which he consider solved.
But... things develop in unexpected ways.

Carl Sagan, the American cosmologist, points to reasons why humans have had a tendency to deny animals can suffer:
Humans – who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals – have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and 'animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them – without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us.
