When democratic socialists envision an ideal society, they see a society in which the needs of all are met.

But to what extent can socialism actually deal with the issues we face on a systemic level?

In this article, Maslow’s hierarchy – as flawed as it is as a psychological theory – is applied to the prospect of democratic socialism in the United States to evaluate its potential effectiveness in lifting the working class to self-actualization.

On Friday, 6 lifelong unelected justices officially determined that our right to privacy is unconstitutional. It is as horrifying as the implications this has for working-class people who are put in literal danger by this decision.

The radical fundamentalist Evangelicals who are grossly overrepresented in higher-level governments, backed by the capital-owning class, have won the day again.

This is not the solution to curbing abortion, as subsidizing abortion and other healthcare would do.

This was never about abortion, this is about class, and it has never been more obvious that systemic change is necessary.

Electoralism in the United States witnessed at the state and municipal levels something seldom seen: socialists winning office. Most notably, 27 of the 39 endorsed by the DSA won elections.

In a country which still feels the scars of a century-long Red Scare, a 67% win rate is impressive to say the least.

While internal debates rage on about whether or not to work inside the existing political framework continue, understanding the past of socialist electoral movements can help formulate a wide range of strategies to advance the movement.
