A ragtag group of theater artists has come together to perform a down-and-dirty, guerrilla audio recording of this grotesque, absurd, tragic, terrifying and hilarious look at the collapse of democratic institutions at the hands of an insane, incompetent and irredeemable would-be tyrant. Act One, in which Daddy Ubu encounters the three witches, who deliver their prophecies about the political fortunes and Momma Ubu lays out her plans to fulfill them.

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT
In 2007, I wrote and directed a mash-up of William Shakespeare’s MACBETH and Alfred Jarry’s UBU ROI called THE POLISH PLAY. It was a wild, playful theatrical romp without much political bite. After the 2016 election, THE POLISH PLAY started calling to me. The way that it combined and balanced the tragic, the absurd and the grotesque felt like it spoke to our new political climate in a way that felt potent, provocative and true. I started re-writing the play as a desperate cry. As I wrote and rewrote the play, the political climate in this country has gotten increasingly Ubuesque with each passing news cycle. It was thrilling to me that Lisa Gaye Dixon and Illinois Theater chose to produce the play last spring. The open dress rehearsal on the eve of the COVID shutdown was one of the most thrilling and cathartic evenings I have spent in a theater.

I had hoped to stage a series of drunken pop-up readings across the country this fall as the election approached. With that not being possible, I am thrilled that this rag tag group of theater artists has come together to record this guerrilla audio recording of PSH*TTER. Like the play itself, this audio recording is a raw and desperate cry out into the chasm. I hope it will reach someone who needs its fun-house mirror reflection of the world we live in….its warning that there still could be worse to come….it’s call to action to a rebel army that has already mobilized and is lining up in record numbers to make their own voices heard.

I hope you enjoy it.
Henry
