Beth Manteuffel Sharing knowledge in sustainability & wellness to help others discover practical solutions Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I am also a WELL AP.

I am a self-employed consultant with an educational background in mechanical engineering and sustainable design. I am an Accredited Professional for green building rating system programs such LEED AP BD+C. LEED standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and BD+C targets Building Design and Construction projects. It covers sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere

, transportation, indoor environmental quality, and materials. The WELL Building Standard involves features of the built environment that impact human health and wellness. It ties several features of buildings to the impacts on several systems of the body (i.e. muscular, digestive, nervous system and more). My greatest interest has been to support resource-efficient, healthy buildings and homes, and sustainable sites. Outside my doorstep I have been cultivating a native plant landscape with the aim of supporting a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem in my backyard. Through my personal journey, professional training, and career experience I look forward to sharing practical solutions that others can implement in their own lives.

Taking a moment to glance outside the window and see if I can catch part of the show! ✨☄️ According to The Patch, out in my area “stargazers will be rewarded with what is regarded as the best meteor shower of the year, the Geminids, which fire off at a rate of about 120 shooting stars an hour during the Wednesday night and Thursday morning peak.” If you look toward the Gemini constellation which is in the vicinity of the brightest star in the sky (Sirius) you might have some luck! I’ll be looking at the open sky facing west.

One of the most reliable meteor events on the calendar will occur during a new moon this year, which could make for excellent viewing opportunities.

It's on my bucket list to one day see the northern lights ✨ If I'm lucky maybe I'll have a chance to see it locally. Have you been able to see them?

On a positive note, haven’t seen any mosquitoes in weeks.

As winter settles in and many of us dream about hibernating, explore how parks can be places of healing, inspiration, and peace. Some parks become serene winter wonderlands blanketed in snow; others offer dreams of vacation getaways or festive fun. Whether you think the weather outside is frightful or delighful, stay connected with national parks in-person and virtually as the year comes to an end and a new one begins.

Facebook informed me it was National Cookie Day! I admittedly have a sweet tooth, and these are my favorite go-to’s for a sweet treat without feeling too guilty about it. It’s a short and clean ingredient list, especially considering the label cookie 😋 What’s your favorite kind of cookie? Is there a healthy version or recipe you like?

I love this idea of reusing a Christmas tree for several seasons, and then it gets planted rather than discarded. Have you seen this done near you before? 🎄✨

1.🌞 Embrace Natural Light: Open those curtains wide and let the sunshine in! ☀️🪟 Make the most of daylight hours to reduce your reliance on artificial lighting.

2.🚫 Unplug Unused Devices: Say "bye-bye" to energy vampires! 🧛‍♂️ Unplug chargers, appliances, and electronics when you're not using them. They can still consume energy even in standby mode!

3.🌬️ Adjust the Thermostat: Keep it cozy, but not too toasty! 🌡️ Lower your heating by a few degrees in winter and use fans instead of air conditioning during mild weather.

4.🚰 Save Water, Save Energy: Fix leaky faucets and take shorter showers! 🚿💦 Conserving water not only helps the planet, but it also reduces the energy needed to heat water.

5.💡 Upgrade to LED Lights: Shed some light on energy efficiency! 💡💡 LED bulbs last longer and use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

6.🏡 Home Insulation: Seal the leaks, save the energy! 🏠🔍 Properly insulate your home to retain heat in winter and keep cool in summer.

7.🍽️ Smart Cooking: Cook with a lid on and match pan size to the burner! 🍳🔥 This simple trick reduces cooking time and saves energy.

8.🚗 Eco-Friendly Commute: Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transport! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🚍 By cutting back on solo car trips, you help lower carbon emissions.

What’s your vote? Do you think it will be a mild winter? ❄️

8 out of 9 woolly bear caterpillars agree it will be a mild winter. Severe or mild, they'll all be frozen solid under leaf litter anyway. In the spring, these caterpillars will thaw out, pupate within cocoons and emerge as adult Isabella tiger moths.

I love the sight of fireflies and butterflies, and insects need a place to overwinter. This is often in leaf litter or under tree bark. Consider leaving the leaves, especially in your garden beds and at the base of trees. Because where do these insects go in the spring? In search of food! Often climbing their way up a native tree or to munch on some native plants. In my zip code an oak tree supports 470 butterfly and moth species that use it as the host plant for their caterpillars! Here are some more tips to create an eco-friendly habitat in your yard this fall 🍁

This Saturday 10/14 there will be a solar eclipse! According to time.com, "This is the last annular 'ring of fire' solar eclipse that will be visible in the U.S. until 2039 ...NASA has an interactive map showing the path the 2023 eclipse is taking while also listing times when the astronomical event begins."

An annular solar eclipse is when the moon is farthest away and will not entirely block the sun, creating the 'ring of fire.' In 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse, and those in the northeast and midwest will have a better chance of viewing that one.

I picked up solar eclipse viewing glasses because you don’t want to look at an eclipse without special glasses. Safety first! Here's my affiliate link if you want to grab a pair too (as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases): https://amzn.to/3RYMVsr. I hope I can see the eclipse tomorrow, and if not I'll be ready to see one next year! 🌞 Enjoy the weekend!

Well...that's embarrassing! 👀

Recently I was gifted a smart watch, and my daily step count was MUCH lower than I realized!

Recommended step counts can vary by age, and according to MedicineNet my activity level is considered sedentary! 😳 I walk with my dogs one or two times a day, but I let them take their time sniffing and it's admittedly a slow pace ...and clearly not enough movement!

Step count is a health indicator. I love that I can monitor this on my smart watch along with other metrics for heart rate, sleep cycles, and reminders to stand after sitting a while.

Today kicks off Amazon Prime Big Deal Days. It's a great chance to grab a smart watch or simple pedometer on sale. I'll link to my watch in the comments below. It's currently 20% off for Prime members, and if you're not a member you may qualify for a free trial.

Now...it's time for me to get up and get moving! 😊

Admittedly... I've been on the computer a bit too much lately! Reading a physical book is a great way to unwind and give the eyes a break from the screen. Books offer us the chance to be enlightened, educated, or entertained. We can read someone's entire life lessons, or a career worth of knowledge, all from the pages of one book. I was browsing the upcoming Amazon Prime Big Deal Days sale (Oct 10-11th) and I discovered some great books that went on sale early. View my curated list covering the topics below:

I am relieved to have finished trainings that required a time commitment in recent months, and with that off my plate my new blogging goal is to ramp up my writing. There is a long list of well over 100 topics that I've been wanting to cover! The next one will be about rainwater, given the abundance of raindrops that have fallen here in recent weeks. We saw many areas of local roads that washed out in September, like this spot right down the road from our home. Thankfully we are having a break with blue skies today!

🌞 PS: Are you on Pinterest? Let's connect! You can find me . This is a great way to save topics that interest you most and so you won't miss out.

Happy First Day of Fall! Autumn is a time tied to change, balance, harvest, and letting go. As the leaves return to the ground, they nourish the soil for the tree that released them. The fallen leaves are used for food, and are a welcome comfort for many creatures as they seek or build shelter. Cycles of nature tend to have their reasons. I'm grateful that the process just so happens to include an amazing display of color along the way! I wish you a wonderful autumn season! 🥰🍂🍁

I was so happy when I went to a local nursery last weekend and native perennial Asters were mixed right in with the mums. Hopefully these kind of shifts in the industry will help more native plants make their way into yards. The asters fit right in almost disguised as mums, and multiple bees were flying along with us on our trip to the cash register. A few caterpillars were on them as well, and they’re now happy in our pollinator garden ❤️

This time of year, many people buy decorative mums to give their property some fall color. The down-side is that mums do not provide for wildlife; they are cultivars and hybrids from Europe and Asia.

Want a native alternative to mums? One that will bloom every fall with great benefits for the local pollinators 🐝? Plant Asters! Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve) has bright periwinkle blooms that will contrast well against an autumnal orange and yellow backdrop 🍂🌾. Potted plants are available now in 3-packs and will be shipped this month. Get them while you still can! 🌱

Prime Day ends tonight, and my favorite desk lamp is on sale! I've had this lamp for over 6 years in my home office. It is great for lighting control, given how much that can impact circadian rhythm. It has five color modes ranging from warm to bright light, with five brightness levels. I love to use it on the dimmest, warmest color setting at dawn or in the evenings. Their initiative is based on our simple, collective actions: “Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or…anywhere, and you have made a difference.” Using my new found supplies I experimented with two versions of trash art!
