Edward Morris, a resident of Kingston Springs, has a remarkable story woven through decades of journalism, teaching and a love for the written word.

Now at 89, he’s channeling his experiences into a new column for the Kingston Springs Gazette titled "And Then There’s This..." — a platform where he plans to share humor, wisdom and observations about life.

Morris’s journey to Kingston Springs began with his wife, Norma, who purchased her home in the early ’90s. Though married with three kids, for 35 years, they lived apart, each in their own homes — Morris in Nashville and Norma in Kingston Springs. When Norma’s health began to decline around 2015, Morris moved in with her.

In his new column, Morris hopes to provide insightful commentary. “It’ll just be a lot of humor and common-sense wisdom I may have accumulated,” he said. “I try to think of interesting observations and witticisms.”

As Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, Kingston Springs residents emerged as a beacon of hope for their neighbors, and in many cases, former hometowns.

Susanna Oberg, who moved to Kingston Springs in December 2022 but has deep roots in Western North Carolina, also felt compelled to help. “I was born and raised in Murphy, North Carolina ... Most of my friends still currently live near the Asheville area,” she shared.

After witnessing the devastation through family reports, including her sister, a police officer in Banner Elk, Oberg organized a drive for cold weather items, receiving nearly a hundred bags filled with essentials. “I ended up renting a 4x8 U-Haul trailer and stuffed it to the max capacity,” she said.

Her efforts culminated in a delivery to the Shepherd of the Mountains Church in Murphy on Oct. 7, where the items were distributed to those in need. “Their generosity and kindness shows just how caring this community is,” she added.

Though Halloween has come and gone, the stunning pumpkin carvings of local artist Lundy Cupp continue to capture the spirit of artistry in Kingston Springs.

Known for his intricate designs, Cupp’s passion for carving has become a beloved part of the community's seasonal celebrations.

Originally from Chicago, Cupp’s artistic journey is marked by unexpected twists. After a successful career as a professional drummer and a criminal fraud investigator — complete with the thrills of bounty hunting — he discovered the therapeutic joy of carving 15 years ago.

Now at 66, Cupp balances his time between music and art, continuing to perform with talented musicians across Nashville while creating unique pieces from wood and pumpkins — or really, anything, including sweet potatoes and deer antlers.

As Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, Kingston Springs residents emerged as a beacon of hope for their neighbors, and in many cases, former hometowns.

Residents like Whitney Gorbet, Susanna Oberg and Goldie Essary stepped up to coordinate critical relief efforts for those in need.

Gorbet, originally from Hendersonville, North Carolina, and an event planner since 2016, found her passion for community service ignited by the disaster. "I started working out in Kingston Springs in 2021 ... The people, the trees, the winding roads -- It’s been a gift," she reflected.

Her unique background in project management and creative problem-solving enabled her to address the challenges posed by the hurricane. “It was just the attitude of hearing all of the needs and responding with ‘I’ll figure it out’ that people seemed to need,” she shared.
