OceanPaddler founder Dean Gardiner is regarded by his peers as the best Australian downwind paddler of our time, his reputation founded on countless victories internationally at the world-renowned Molokai Challenge, at the ICF World Cup, world regattas and countless races in Australia.

A nine-time Molokai World Champion, Dean’s first Molokai was in 1989, and since then he has raced almost every one of the 53 km Hawaiian enduros. The most revered ocean ski race in the world, paddlers are faced with an ocean crossing, traversing the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai island to Oahu. So dominant was Dean, that the race record that was set in 1994 – and he bettered in 1998 – held strong for 24 years, only broken in 2018 by his good friend and fellow Fenn paddler, Cory Hill.

Perth born and bred, Dean was the founder of the iconic Doctor race, a 27 km downwind race from Rottnest Island to Perth. He staged his first Doctor in 2001, won it in 2022, and has built it over the last two decades to the legendary event it is today.

In 2002, Dean introduced ocean paddling to Australia through the introduction of Fenn skis to our shores, and the development of the first ocean racing series.

Two decades of hard work and financial risk by Dean, has seen the sport flourish in Australia and now Oceanpaddler organises the Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing Series, a 16-race championship across five Australian states.

Dean’s a pioneer of ocean ski racing, and along with a handful of passionate paddlers from around the globe, is largely responsible for the popularity of the sport today.

New to the ? Here is a bit of an introduction to what my intentions are and what it’s all about!

WHAT IS NORMLESS?

NORMLESS is a word meaning without norms.

Our podcast is a series of conversations with individuals who haven’t chosen standard models of behaviour, standard ways to achieve performance or outcomes, nor standard ways to live their lives.

They have forged their own unique way, whether through sport, business, adventure, the arts or within their communities. Challenging the norms, often changing the way people think and industries work - they are NORMLESS people you may never have heard of.

Each episode gives you the opportunity to hear intriguing and often previously untold stories. Stories of sacrifice and success, tough life lessons learnt, adaption and reinvention.

Each guest will share some of their own philosophies, which you may find useful & relevant in your own life.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF THE PODCAST

I have decided upon four pillars, which will form the framework of each episode.

(1) New or unique philosophies
(2) Knowledge of intriguing topics that inform and/or challenge
(3) Lessons learnt through tough life experiences/sacrifices
(4) Adapting to new structures and achieving reinvention

One of Manly’s favourite sons, Matt ‘Ox’ Orford. Grew up on the Central Coast of NSW a humble young man. Short in stature, but true grit and tenacity to achieve his dream of becoming a professional rugby league footballer.

This time Matt assumed an important responsibility as Captain of the club, the beginning of a new era of success for the Sea Eagles.

In 2008, Ox won Halfback of the year and was crowned the Dally M Medalist joining an illustrious group of players to win the award. Despite losing the grand final in 2007, finishing runners up after the conclusion of 26 rounds in 08’, and suffering 2 from 2 loses at the hands of Melbourne throughout regular season that same year. The Sea Eagles backs were against the wall.

It was this finals series Manly’s accomplished one of the most empathic finals campaigns the NRL has seen in years, Beating the Dragons in the Qualifying final, Warriors in the preliminary final and then the Storm in the big dance to achieved the biggest grand final victory in NRL history, with a total for and against for the finals series 110 to 12.

grew up in the working-class suburb of Palmyra close to the port and beaches of Fremantle, Western Australia. As a kid, he, his two brothers, and sister swam competitively in the Fremantle Swimming club. He claims to have spent more time at the beach than at school.

At 16 Dean joined the merchant navy (which he refers to as the family business) and sailed out of Fremantle on his first ship, the MV Boogalla. The main focus at sea, he jokes, is to stay out of the water. He effectively didn’t swim seriously for the next 37 years.

Dean is a former elected official of the Seamen’s Union of Australia later to become the Maritime Union of Australia, MUA. In 2000 Dean became the Australian National Coordinator of the International Transport Workers Federation and moved to Sydney. The ITF represents and defends the world’s 1.3 million seafarers.

In 2013 Dean joined Vlad, a Sydney coach with a dedicated following of long-distance swimmers, and began his journey in the demanding international sport of open water marathon swimming. Vlad now boasts the largest stable of Australian long-distance and channel swimmers.

After two years of training alongside some of the best long-distance swimmers in Australia, Dean swam the English Channel. In the next 12 months, he went on to claim the Catalina Channel and to circumnavigate Manhattan Island in New York. This is known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Dean became the 137th person to achieve it.

Dean is an accomplished Oceans Seven swimmer, a near-impossible series of seven international swims which test the bravery, strength, determination, and resilience of anyone who comes close to it. Dean has six of the seven – English, Catalina, North, and Moloka’i Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar as well as the Cook Strait. The remaining one, the Tsugaru Strait, has been removed from the international swim calendar.

After his Newcastle to Sydney swim, he now holds the record for the longest Australian ocean swim of 95.6km.

Dean resigned from all work commitments early in 2021 and continues to train and mentor others in the sport of ocean swimming.

An exciting tribute to the team from 2007-2013 will see Sea Eagle legends and Matt ‘Ox’ Orford join us on the podcast.

Unmatched by many teams aside from the and throughout this era is was an incredible side that tackled the Storm 40-0 in 2008. The biggest ever winning margin in Australian grand final history! If this wasn’t enough of an achievement, the side did it against a team that would later be found to have breached the salary cap that year.

Matt Ballin scored an integral first try in that match, with the win sending out on a high and capping off a milestone year for captain Matt Orford winning Dally M player of the year and best halfback of the year.

We are exciting to have these champion athletes join us to discuss their careers and life after football. DM or drop any questions you have below and we will ask them during the episode.

Growing up in Western Sydney Russell Manser was committed by the Children's Court Magistrate to the adult Long Bay Jail, despite having just turned 17 years old. A career criminal stealing cars by the age of 14, and a notorious Sydney bank robber throughout the 90's. Russell robbed 5 banks, including a $90,000 hit on Lane Cove's Commonwealth Bank Sydney. At this time he would have been able to purchase a home in Mount Druitt for $25,000. However, it all came crashing down at the age of 23, where he was handed a 15 year jail sentence.

Throughout his time in prison Manser housed with some of the state's worst s*x offenders, resulting in him being s*xually abused repeatedly. His eventual he**in dependence also started there, after his abusers injected him several times with the drug.

Prior to this, Russell had already been struggling to cope with the trauma and anger of having been s*xually abused in Daruk, the notorious juvenile detention centre.

Realising the healing impact of speaking up about the abuse, he found the courage to talk about his experiences with other prisoners, many of whom had experienced similar abuses.

Russell encouraged and supported others to tell their stories, and to seek justice; and after being released from jail, he continued this work, which was the beginning of The Voice of a Survivor.

'The Voice' helped over 6,500 people tell their stories and begin the process for justice and healing.

He completed rehabilitation, gained admission to university, and now shares his experiences on podcasts, radio, and in other media interviews.

He is also involved in the Australian boxing community at a local and national level, through coaching and sponsorship.
