TikTok and WeChat are now licensed to operate in Malaysia under new regulations by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), requiring platforms with over 8 million local users to register. Effective from 1 January 2025, the rules aim to address online harms such as scams and child exploitation.

Tencent (WeChat) and ByteDance (TikTok) have obtained licences, while Telegram is close to approval. The Malaysian government has ended Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) monopoly as the sole 5G provider through Ministerial Direction No. 4 of 2024, transitioning to a dual 5G network model.
