TikTok and WeChat are now licensed to operate in Malaysia under new regulations by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), requiring platforms with over 8 million local users to register. Effective from 1 January 2025, the rules aim to address online harms such as scams and child exploitation.

Tencent (WeChat) and ByteDance (TikTok) have obtained licences, while Telegram is close to approval. Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) has begun the process, but X (formerly Twitter) disputes meeting the user threshold, and YouTube challenges its classification as a social media platform. The MCMC maintains that all major platforms must comply.

The Malaysian government has ended Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) monopoly as the sole 5G provider through Ministerial Direction No. 4 of 2024, transitioning to a dual 5G network model. U Mobile, the country’s smallest telecom provider, has been chosen to lead the rollout of the second network, with aims to boost competition, speed up deployment, and reduce costs.

While U Mobile was selected for its technical plans and past contributions, critics question its ability to manage such a large-scale project compared to larger providers like Maxis or CelcomDigi. The decision has sparked debate over the viability of the new system.
