Facing the Fork in the Road

In 2013, I was laid off from a promising job. I was feeling discouraged, professionally neglected and insecure. I wanted to convince myself it was a huge opportunity (with a nice severance package), but it looked more like a slow decline to depression.

And so the fork appeared.

After 14 years, working at an admirable roster of companies that gave me opportunities I had never dreamed of, I wondered if there was something else for me for the hundredth time. Except this time, it felt really real.

Do I dare venture out into the world, put my career and family’s finances at risk, to find something that works better for me? Or do I keep plugging away at this career in which I’ve already invested so much? Do I take the chance that something else out there will make me happier, or stay the course and fight for the corporate success I know I’m worth?

For me, the answer was outside of corporate America. And I’m grateful that my fork in the road led me to build a mid-6-figure consulting company and a passion-driven start up of which I’m so proud. But I would be a fool to say that it was an easy choice, or even an easy road to 2020. And I recognize and appreciate - every day - what I had to leave behind to get it.

Over the last 7 years, I have been surprised at the number of women that have asked me to lunch, approached me in a hallway or parking lot, given me call, or chatted with me over drinks, and all said the same things:

I'm not sure if this career is still right for me. I often love what I do, but there's a lot that is not working for me. And I'm putting in all I've got, but I'm not getting enough out. How is it doing something so different? How did you know what to do? Do you think it’s something I could do? I wouldn't even know where to start.

All these women, as I was in 2013, are facing a Fork in the Road. The choice between staying with what you know and working to transform it into what you want, or risking it all for the unknown and manifesting something better.

This podcast will share the stories of women who have faced this Fork in the Road and won or lost. Listen to the choices they faced, how they debated the points, where they found inspiration to stay or to go, and so much more (what do our husbands - and our moms - have to say about all this??).

Because not every road is right for every one, listen to their stories to inspire you to choose yours.
