The perfect 'I'm late for work' excuse?

Some iPhone users experienced an unexpected - and unwelcome - lie-in, after their alarm failed to sound.

But rather than a case of forgetfulness, it comes as a result of an issue and Apple is working to fix it.

It isn't known what's causing the alarms to malfunction, or how many iPhone users this affects, but Apple said it hopes to fix the problem rapidly.

And with one person complaining that she had set "like five alarms" and they didn't go off, it might be time to dust off the old fashioned physical alarm clock in the meantime.

The expansion of cotton cultivation in the country has been stagnant for years due to lack of adequate agricultural land, manpower and government support as well as lack of innovation and investment.

According to some experts, despite being the world's second largest garment exporter after China, Bangladesh is still heavily dependent on imported cotton to make garments.

Supreme Court lawyer Khondokar Hasan Shahriar has sent a legal notice demanding the resignation of Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury. The notice, mailed via registered post on Thursday (May 2), also targets other high-ranking officials including the Cabinet Secretary, and the Secretaries of the Primary and Mass Education Ministry, the Secondary and Higher Education Division, and the Technical and Madrasa Education Division. It calls for a reduction in syllabus from May to July, the initiation of online education during this period, and changes to the morning shift timings and current examination system in schools.

Despite the ongoing heatwave, Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury had decided to keep schools and colleges open, leading to severe heat-related illnesses among students and teachers, with several deaths reported. Additionally, his vocal support for English-medium education has sparked controversy and public outrage. In response to these issues and the resultant public dissatisfaction, lawyer Khondokar Hasan Shahriar's legal notice states that the Education Minister must resign immediately and take necessary steps to adjust the academic curriculum and manage the educational institutions more effectively during the crisis.

The cat accidentally turned on the induction cooker in its owner's kitchen and set the home on fire, causing more than 100,000 yuan (Tk 1516630) in damages.

The owner Dandan rushed back to her flat in southwestern China's Sichuan province and realised that the cat was responsible for the fire. The cat named Jingoudiao was simply playing in the kitchen, and accidentally stepped on the induction cooker's touch panel, turning it on. The blaze burned the entire first floor of her loft.

After the incident, the cat's owner changed its Douyin account name to "Sichuan's most badass cat", and made the pet appear on live-streaming sessions to "compensate." She joked that she was making her cat "work to pay off his debt" by appearing in live-streaming sessions, and even put a label on him saying "arsonist".

29/04/2024

Amidst the ongoing heatwave, Education Minister Mahbubul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has expressed dissatisfaction with the High Court's directive to keep primary and secondary schools and madrasas closed until next Thursday. He has announced his intention to appeal against this order in the Appellate Division.

The Education Minister said, "A certain mentality is being created to close down educational institutions across the country. Why does the court's directive always have to be brought against the Ministry of Education for everything?" He believes that it is desirable for everyone to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities. Regarding the news of many teachers and students falling ill after going to educational institutions yesterday, the Education Minister raised a question and said, "It is also a matter of seeing whether those who fell ill were in educational institutions or elsewhere."

On Monday (April 29) afternoon, while talking to media personnel after a program at the Science Complex in Agargaon, the capital, the Education Minister said, "Schools are dangerous due to heat, but not playgrounds and fields? There is no reason to close down educational institutions in districts where the temperature is low." Previously, the High Court had canceled the decision of the Ministry of Education to keep educational institutions open during Ramadan. At that time, the Education Minister said, "According to the constitution, declaring holidays for schools is an executive power. How many days there will be a holiday or not is a specialized matter. It is not under the jurisdiction of the higher court."

On the first day of school reopening during a severe heatwave in Bangladesh, two teachers tragically died from suspected heatstrokes, and many students fell ill. In Chattogram, Maulana Md. Mostak Ahmed Kutubi Alkaderi, a 55-year-old madrasha teacher, became unconscious while commuting to his workplace and later died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Similarly, in Jashore, Ahsan Habib, an assistant teacher, died after falling sick in the morning.

These incidents underscored the harsh impact of the heatwave on educational institutions which had just resumed classes after extended Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Additionally, many students, including Azmira Yasmin, a fourth-grader at Motijheel Ideal School and College, felt sick either during their commute or while at school, leading to several students returning home without attending classes. Parents and teachers expressed concerns over the feasibility of conducting classes amid such extreme temperatures, highlighting the discomfort and health risks faced by students.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today said Chief Heat Officer Bushra Afreen does not get salary from the DNCC.

He said this while visiting the DNCC's water spraying programme at Agargaon in the capital this morning to prevent air pollution and keep the city cool during the ongoing intense heatwave.

"I have seen that many people are talking about the chief heat officer for a few days that she is getting salary from the city corporation. It is not right. She does not get a single penny from the city corporation. She does not even have any sitting arrangement in the city corporation," the mayor said.

"The heat officer has been appointed by a US-based organisation (Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center [Arshot-Rock]). They have recruited seven chief heat officers around the world and all are women."

Saudi Arabia has announced that individuals holding various types of visas, including personal, family, transit, labor, and e-visas, are now permitted to perform Umrah with ease and comfort. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah emphasized that pilgrims can undertake the minor pilgrimage regardless of their visa type, encouraging them to utilize the Nusuk app to obtain Umrah permits and adhere to designated timings for rituals at the Grand Mosque in Mесса.

In recent months, the kingdom has introduced several initiatives to facilitate Umrah for overseas Muslims, especially those who may not be able to participate in the annual Hajj pilgrimage due to physical or financial constraints. These enhancements include extending the Umrah visa duration to 90 days, allowing entry via all ports, eliminating the requirement for women to be accompanied by male guardians, and enabling expatriates in GCC countries and holders of Schengen, US, and UK visas to book Umrah appointments via the Nusuk app before arriving in Saudi Arabia.
