Robert Emery, a founding board member of Coalition for Aging LGBT in Dallas, said that during the last decade, he’s noticed more and more seniors proclaiming their place in the community. He said the rising number of seniors coming out is inextricably linked to how supported and empowered they feel.

Openly LGBTQ seniors “have a great risk of being abused and neglected when it comes to housing,” Emery said. “And a majority of LGBT seniors reported abuse or neglect after being outed to staff. It’s unbelievably powerful to be supported by management.” Read this insightful story appearing in this week's edition on LGBTQ+ senior housing and what community advocates are doing to fight for affordable housing.

Publisher Cheryl Smith is a 30-year news veteran who runs I Messenger News Group, which includes the publications: Texas Metro News, Garland Journal and I Messenger. A former radio host, she's actively involved in NABJ and other professional news organizations. Since 1995 she has hosted the Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon to raise funds for scholarships, internships and grants for students. 🖊️What does it mean when they say redlining? The term "redlining" refers to the practice of refusing to make loans or otherwise discriminating in providing financial assistance for housing in particular geographic areas. Historically, some lending institutions were found to have maps with red lines delineating neighborhoods within which they would not do business, according to HUD.

🖊️What does it mean when they say missing middle housing? Typically, it means anything from a duplex to a small apartment building but, significantly, it is housing that would blend in in a residential neighborhood dominated by single-family homes. Advocates across the country are pushing for it to be more widely permitted and more widely built in order to create more housing options, as well as greater opportunities for small scale developers.

🖊️What does it mean when they say subsidized housing? It's a generic term covering all federal, state or local government programs that reduce the cost of housing for low- and moderate-income residents. Subsidized simply means that rents are reduced because of a particular government program. It has nothing to do with the quality, location or type of housing.
