Join the quest to find Aotearoa’s Māori music creators, in the wake of COVID-19.
The sweet sound of birdsong that heralds the dawn of a new day. Korihi is also a transliteration for the word chorus. Singing in chorus, in synch and as one. COVID-19 has seen the mobilisation of Māori communities across the motu come together to fight this devastating global crisis.
KORIHI is a national quest to find Maori contemporary music composers able to create waiata that captures and reflects the impact of Covid-19, on whanau, hapu, iwi and communities across Aotearoa.
Covid-19 has seen the way we live and interact as Maori, change overnight. Lockdown saw an entire country close for business, the nation was paused to stay home, and international and regional travel restrictions halted New Zealand’s economy. Despite expats returning home, mixing with extended whanau was forbidden, hongi was no more, and huge restrictions were placed on tangihanga. And while we’ve adapted to life with COVID-19, the way we operate and the way we live today in Aotearoa is the new norm.
KORIHI begins in the regions with a national talent quest, based on the seven Maori electoral regions thanks to the collective efforts of our 4 main sponsors:
National Urban Maori Authority
Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency
Te Whakaruruhau o Nga Reo Irirangi Maori (Iwi Radio Stations Network)
Maori Television
This platform provides our families with the opportunity to share their own experiences, challenges, learning and hopes in moving forward, through waiata.
We acknowledge participants may spend a lot of time and effort to create and enter a waiata into this “composition competition”, so Cash Prizes are up for grabs as well as a Masterclass Wananga with established Celebrity artists. 2 finalists from each region will be chosen by our amazingly talented regional Judges and the Wananga will help prepare them and their waiata for the Grand Final in August. The Grand Final will be televised LIVE on Maori Television!! So a HUGE Mihi to our generous sponsors :-) and we are SO looking forward to celebrating the success of all of YOU in these unprecedented times.
We hope you will jump aboard our “Korihi” cyberwaka! Whether as a kaiwaiata, kaitito or kaitautoko... TUNE in, Submit your Entry Form, VOTE if you like or just enjoy :-) and SHARE this kaupapa with anyone you know who has a message they would like to sing. The KORIHI CREW will not only be keen to sing along with you, but we will only be a ‘messenger message’ away to help you through the on-line process. Our amazing, gorgeous and gifted Korihi Host Promoters are Pere Wihongi, Matai Smith and Rahia Timutimu, who are navigating our waka in search of the Best of the best waiata that Aotearoa has to offer! Nga mihi nunui ki a tatou katoa!!!
