Maryland’s Black Beauty Brewery is Building a Legacy of Innovation and Cultural Pride!

In the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheldon Goins found himself at a crossroads.

He had lost his job in February 2020, and in search of solace, he began experimenting with various craft beers from a local liquor store in Bowie, MD. This exploration sparked an unexpected idea, courtesy of his wife, Brittany. “What if we created our own beer?” she proposed. Though initially skeptical, Sheldon soon found her suggestion compelling. He invested in brewing equipment and homebrew kits, starting a journey that would ultimately lead to the creation of Black Beauty Brewery in August 2020.

Break Dancing Honors Hip-Hop Heritage with Debut at Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games

For the first time in Olympic history, break dancing, or "breaking," will make its debut as a medal sport at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, according to the Olympics website. This iconic dance form, which originated in the vibrant streets of the Bronx in the 1970s, is set to captivate a global audience with its blend of athleticism, artistry, and urban culture.

The inclusion of breaking in the Olympics follows its successful debut at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018. The overwhelming response to breaking in Argentina demonstrated the dance form’s universal appeal and its capacity to resonate with diverse audiences. This enthusiasm paved the way for breaking to be featured prominently in the Paris 2024 Games.

Tomorrow, July 21st, fans of Tabitha Brown will have another reason to celebrate as her highly anticipated wine collection rolls out at Target stores nationwide. This exciting launch follows her earlier announcement in March, where she shared that her products would become evergreen, cementing their place on Target shelves.

This wine collection is just the latest addition to Tabitha’s growing presence at Target. Since her products were first introduced, they’ve become a favorite among customers. The decision to make them evergreen means that fans can enjoy her offerings year-round, and the new wine collection is set to be a popular choice. Along with the debut of the wine collection tomorrow, household items including an air fryer, blender, food processor, and afro-handled sauté pans will be available in Target stores.

The country's most anticipated culinary event for people of color, The Family Reunion, is back for another year. This sold-out extravaganza, taking place August 15th-18th at Salamander Middleburg Resort in Virginia, is set to be a vibrant celebration of Black excellence in the culinary world.

Championed by acclaimed chefs like Nyesha Arrington, Mashama Bailey, Kwame Onwuachi, and Rodney Scott, The Family Reunion boasts an amazing culinary team. This year's event welcomes new sponsors like Appleton Estate, Wells Fargo, and Amazon, further enriching the experience.

The focus isn't just on delicious food, though. The Family Reunion offers a multi-faceted experience with thought-provoking panel discussions, interactive cooking demonstrations, and even fun activities like ziplining and a Family Field Day. There will also be the return of the reality show-style "Chopped" competition, where teams battle it out with mystery ingredients.

Tim Reid, a celebrated actor and director, has recently directed a highly anticipated Lifetime biopic, "Call Me Now: The Rise and Fall of Miss Cleo." The film, which has already completed filming, is set to premiere on Saturday, August 10th, only on Lifetime. The biopic stars Robin Allen, famously known as Lady of Rage, portraying the late Miss Cleo.

Miss Cleo, born Youree Dell Harris, became a household name in the late 1990s as the face of the Psychic Readers Network. With her distinctive accent and charismatic demeanor, she captivated audiences, claiming to have psychic abilities. However, her career came crashing down amid legal troubles and allegations of deceptive practices, leading to the eventual collapse of the Psychic Readers Network. "Call Me Now: The Rise and Fall of Miss Cleo" tells the fascinating story behind the persona, exploring Harris’s life, the rise to fame, and the subsequent controversies that surrounded her.

In music, 1994 was dominated by influential albums that would shape the sound of hip-hop and R&B for decades to come. Television also saw the rise of beloved series that showcased Black talent and narratives in unprecedented ways. The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is advancing the dialogue on Black women's health with the announcement of their latest documentary, Me Period. This film explores the vital and often overlooked discussions surrounding puberty, menstruation, and health discovery within Black families.

Me Period features deeply personal conversations between families of all types, showcasing the multifaceted experiences of Black women and girls. The film includes insights and stories from Emmy-award winners, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tabitha Brown, alongside their daughters, Ivy Coco Maurice and Choyce Brown. These intergenerational discussions shed light on the shared and unique challenges faced by Black women as they navigate the complexities of their menstrual journeys.

This past weekend, Fantasia Barrino-Taylor celebrated her 40th birthday with a bang, throwing an epic 90s-themed party that had everyone dancing and reminiscing about the decade's glory days. The singer, who turned 40 on June 30th, made sure her milestone was nothing short of spectacular.

Fantasia's Sigma Gamma Rho sorors from the legendary R&B group Brownstone also took the spotlight, delivering a soulful rendition of their hit "If You Love Me," which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

In a surprise that left everyone cheering, Fantasia was treated to a special performance by another soror and hip-hop legend, MC Lyte.

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s was a groundbreaking period that celebrated African American culture and creativity. It was a time when Black artists, writers, musicians, and intellectuals came together in Harlem, New York, to redefine the narrative around Black identity and expression. Today, we are witnessing a similar surge of Black talent across various creative fields, marking what many are calling a new Black renaissance. This modern movement not only mirrors the Harlem Renaissance, but also builds upon its legacy.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art has a special treat for us this fall! For the first time, they’re showcasing a unique collection of lithographs by the legendary sculptor Richard Hunt. Known for his massive metal sculptures in public spaces across the country, Hunt’s works on paper are a hidden gem that show a new side of his artistic genius.

The exhibition, Richard Hunt: From Paper to Metal, opens on October 12, 2024, and runs through March 2, 2025. It features twenty-five lithographs from Hunt's time at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1965. These prints are displayed alongside Natural Form (1968), a newly acquired sculpture by Hunt that hasn’t been seen in public for over fifty years. This piece, made from welded steel, highlights Hunt’s unique blend of industrial and organic elements.

Last night, the BET Awards 2024 took over the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and it was a night to remember! One of the biggest highlights was the tribute to Usher, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The tribute started with a beautiful performance of Usher’s hit “U Don’t Have to Call” by Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) and Keke Palmer.

PBS’s Emmy-winning series Great Performances has brought a groundbreaking play to its viewers. Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, a comedic play that tells the story of a Black preacher’s scheme to reclaim his inheritance and win back his church from a plantation owner, is available for streaming through July 19, 2024.

This revival of Ossie Davis’ 1961 play stars Tony Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kara Young, who won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her portrayal of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins. The play also received 2024 Tony nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play (Leslie Odom, Jr.), Best Direction of a Play (Kenny Leon), Best Costume Design of a Play (Emilio Sosa), and Best Scenic Design of a Play (Derek McLane).

In awesome collaboration, Disney and Balmain have unveiled the Disney x Balmain: The Lion King collection, an array of ready-to-wear designs and accessories for both men and women. This unique collection, inspired by Africa’s artisanal traditions, celebrates a new generation of African talents and marks the first partnership between Disney and the historic French fashion house.

Timed to honor the 30th anniversary of Disney’s Academy Award-winning classic "The Lion King" and the upcoming release of "Mufasa: The Lion King" in December, the Disney x Balmain collection will be released globally on July 8th. Balmain’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing, and his team have infused the collection with signature Balmain silhouettes, impressive embellishments, and tailoring skills, reflecting the timeless themes and characters of "The Lion King."

Born on June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas, Solange Knowles has made a profound mark as a singer, songwriter, actress, and visual artist. Starting as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child at 14, she quickly ventured into music and film, releasing her debut album "Solo Star" in 2002 and starring in films like "Johnson Family Vacation" and "Bring It On: All or Nothing.

"Her breakthrough came with the Grammy-winning album "A Seat at the Table" (2016), praised for its exploration of Black identity. Solange has also excelled in performance art, captivating audiences with pieces like "An Ode To" and "Metatronia." In 2013, she founded Saint Heron, a platform amplifying Black and brown voices in art.

Happy 38th birthday to the fearless and boundary-pushing Solange, whose influence continues to inspire across music and art!

Chezik Tsunoda is no stranger to the entertainment industry. She cites her early days as a member of production teams on major music networks such as BET, MTV, and VH1. With a career spanning two decades, including music videos for artists like Ghostface and other Wu-Tang Clan rappers, Tsunoda has found her own groove vocalizing for the downtrodden.

Her passion is driven by a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices, a sentiment she clarifies in the vision statement of Visually Inspired Productions: “Amplifying the most overlooked and dismissed voices is vital to understanding the world we live in and creating a path towards the world we hope to build.”

Tsunoda’s efforts through No More Under and Visually Inspired Productions ensure that future generations will have the knowledge and resources to prevent tragedies like the one she endured, while also bringing much-needed attention to broader societal issues.

If you haven’t heard, ’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has kicked off a special celebration for the 30th anniversary of , according to a recent post on Disney Parks Blog. From now until September 6, fans of the original animated film can enjoy character greetings, themed food and drinks, unique merchandise items, and other special “only at Disney” surprises.

While “The Lion King” is an animated cartoon devoid of human depictions, it holds a special place in the hearts of many in the Black community. This is largely due to its stellar voice cast, which includes notable Black actors like Jason Weaver, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, and Madge Sinclair. The film’s cultural significance is deepened by the presence of Jones and Sinclair, who also portrayed a royal couple in the classic film Coming to America.

guests can meet Timon and Rafiki at Conservation Station, accessible by train from Kilimanjaro Safaris, and participate in the Animation Experience to learn to draw other characters from the film. The event also features limited-time culinary delights like the Simba Paw Cookie, You Follow Old Rafiki Cheesecake, Rafiki’s Squash Banana shake, Simba slushy, and Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich.
