Maryland’s Black Beauty Brewery is Building a Legacy of Innovation and Cultural Pride!

In the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheldon Goins found himself at a crossroads.

He had lost his job in February 2020, and in search of solace, he began experimenting with various craft beers from a local liquor store in Bowie, MD. This exploration sparked an unexpected idea, courtesy of his wife, Brittany. “What if we created our own beer?” she proposed. Though initially skeptical, Sheldon soon found her suggestion compelling. He invested in brewing equipment and homebrew kits, starting a journey that would ultimately lead to the creation of Black Beauty Brewery in August 2020.

Break Dancing Honors Hip-Hop Heritage with Debut at Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games

For the first time in Olympic history, break dancing, or "breaking," will make its debut as a medal sport at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, according to the Olympics website. This iconic dance form, which originated in the vibrant streets of the Bronx in the 1970s, is set to captivate a global audience with its blend of athleticism, artistry, and urban culture.

The inclusion of breaking in the Olympics follows its successful debut at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018. The overwhelming response to breaking in Argentina demonstrated the dance form’s universal appeal and its capacity to resonate with diverse audiences. This enthusiasm paved the way for breaking to be featured prominently in the Paris 2024 Games.

The country's most anticipated culinary event for people of color, The Family Reunion, is back for another year. This sold-out extravaganza, taking place August 15th-18th at Salamander Middleburg Resort in Virginia, is set to be a vibrant celebration of Black excellence in the culinary world.

Championed by acclaimed chefs like Nyesha Arrington, Mashama Bailey, Kwame Onwuachi, and Rodney Scott, The Family Reunion boasts an amazing culinary team. This year's event welcomes new sponsors like Appleton Estate, Wells Fargo, and Amazon, further enriching the experience.

The focus isn't just on delicious food, though. The Family Reunion offers a multi-faceted experience with thought-provoking panel discussions, interactive cooking demonstrations, and even fun activities like ziplining and a Family Field Day. This past weekend, Fantasia Barrino-Taylor celebrated her 40th birthday with a bang, throwing an epic 90s-themed party that had everyone dancing and reminiscing about the decade's glory days. The singer, who turned 40 on June 30th, made sure her milestone was nothing short of spectacular.

Fantasia's Sigma Gamma Rho sorors from the legendary R&B group Brownstone also took the spotlight, delivering a soulful rendition of their hit "If You Love Me," which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art has a special treat for us this fall! For the first time, they’re showcasing a unique collection of lithographs by the legendary sculptor Richard Hunt. Known for his massive metal sculptures in public spaces across the country, Hunt’s works on paper are a hidden gem that show a new side of his artistic genius.

The exhibition, Richard Hunt: From Paper to Metal, opens on October 12, 2024, and runs through March 2, 2025. It features twenty-five lithographs from Hunt's time at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1965. These prints are displayed alongside Natural Form (1968), a newly acquired sculpture by Hunt that hasn’t been seen in public for over fifty years. This piece, made from welded steel, highlights Hunt’s unique blend of industrial and organic elements.

Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, a comedic play that tells the story of a Black preacher’s scheme to reclaim his inheritance and win back his church from a plantation owner, is available for streaming through July 19, 2024.

This revival of Ossie Davis’ 1961 play stars Tony Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kara Young, who won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her portrayal of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins. Born on June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas, Solange Knowles has made a profound mark as a singer, songwriter, actress, and visual artist. Starting as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child at 14, she quickly ventured into music and film, releasing her debut album "Solo Star" in 2002 and starring in films like "Johnson Family Vacation" and "Bring It On: All or Nothing.

"Her breakthrough came with the Grammy-winning album "A Seat at the Table" (2016), praised for its exploration of Black identity. Solange has also excelled in performance art, captivating audiences with pieces like "An Ode To" and "Metatronia." With a career spanning two decades, including music videos for artists like Ghostface and other Wu-Tang Clan rappers, Tsunoda has found her own groove vocalizing for the downtrodden.

Her passion is driven by a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices, a sentiment she clarifies in the vision statement of Visually Inspired Productions: “Amplifying the most overlooked and dismissed voices is vital to understanding the world we live in and creating a path towards the world we hope to build.”

If you haven’t heard, ’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has kicked off a special celebration for the 30th anniversary of , according to a recent post on Disney Parks Blog. From now until September 6, fans of the original animated film can enjoy character greetings, themed food and drinks, unique merchandise items, and other special “only at Disney” surprises.

While “The Lion King” is an animated cartoon devoid of human depictions, it holds a special place in the hearts of many in the Black community. This is largely due to its stellar voice cast, which includes notable Black actors like Jason Weaver, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, and Madge Sinclair. The film’s cultural significance is deepened by the presence of Jones and Sinclair, who also portrayed a royal couple in the classic film Coming to America.

guests can meet Timon and Rafiki at Conservation Station, accessible by train from Kilimanjaro Safaris, and participate in the Animation Experience to learn to draw other characters from the film. The event also features limited-time culinary delights like the Simba Paw Cookie, You Follow Old Rafiki Cheesecake, Rafiki’s Squash Banana shake, Simba slushy, and Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich. Exclusive merchandise includes a Simba-themed sweatshirt, tie-dye youth hoodie, “Hakuna Matata” ear headband, f***y pack, youth shirt and short set, and an adult sweatshirt with favorite characters.
