NOW PLAYING ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co THE EAGLES - LYIN' EYES
Written by band members Don Henley and Glenn Frey, with lead vocals by Frey, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and was nominated for Record Of The Year.
The title and idea for the song came when Glenn and Don were in their favorite Los Angeles bar restaurant, Dan Tana's which was frequented by many beautiful women and started talking about beautiful women who were cheating on their husbands.
They saw one particularly beautiful young woman with a fat much older wealthy man, and Frey said: "She can't even hide those lyin' eyes."
The song, written at a time when Frey and Henley were sharing a house in Trousdale, Beverly Hills, was completed in just two evenings.
The country flavoured track reached No.2 in the U.S., No.3 in Ireland, No.23 in the U.K. and was ranked No.5 in the RADIO NOVA LISTENERS ALL-TIME TOP 100 in October 1983. - LJ

The title track of Al's 1976 album Year of the Cat, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, in January 1976 by engineer Alan Parsons, a year before releasing his first PROJECT album.
The song, written and recorded in the Vietnamese Year of the Cat, tells of a tourist, visiting an exotic market when a mysterious silk-clad woman appears and takes him away for a gauz-like romantic adventure.
Liverpool born Phil McKenzie played the saxophone solos that transformed Al's original folk song into a jazz-influenced ballad that reached No.8 in the U.S. and No.31 in the U.K. in 1976.
The song was ranked No.46 in the RADIO NOVA ALL-TIME TOP 100 in October 1983 - LJ

JOHN FOGERTY - THE OLD MAN DOWN THE ROAD
The lead single from Fogerty's 1984 comeback album, Centerfield.
Fogerty, while lead singer and main songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival, had written and recorded "Run Through the Jungle." released on Fantasy Records.
When CCR disbanded in 1972 Fogerty began a solo career with Warner Bros. Records for whom he recorded and published the song "The Old Man Down the Road".
Fantasy sued Fogerty for copyright infringement, claiming that "The Old Man Down the Road" was essentially the music to "Run Through the Jungle" with new words.
However, after a long protracted case involving several trials, a jury found in Fogerty's favor, rejecting the claim of infringement.
During the case Fogerty brought his guitar to the witness stand and played excerpts from both songs, demonstrating that many songwriters (himself included) have distinctive styles that can make different compositions sound similar to less discerning ears, thereby proving that the two songs were whole, separate and distinct compositions. - LJ

ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co GARY U.S. BONDS - THIS LITTLE GIRL
Bonds, an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, best known for his classic hits New Orleans (1960) and "Quarter to Three" (1961), had a career resurgence with two albums Dedication and On the Line, collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, and the E Street Band, which yielded singles including "This Little Girl" his comeback hit in 1981, No.11 on the pop chart in Billboard Hot 100.
The singer's real name is Gary Anderson, but he took the stage name U.S. BONDS, in hopes that it would be confused with a U.S. public service announcement advertising the sale of government bonds and thereby garner more DJ attention.

ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co MICHAEL McDONALD - I KEEP FORGETTIN
American singer-songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan (1974).
McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes," "Minute by Minute," and "Takin' It to the Streets."
The song, a U.S No.4 in 1982, is so similar to a 1962 Chuck Jackson recording, that McDonald, was forced to give it's writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, a songwriting credit.
Warren G sampled Micheal's song on his hit 1994 single "Regulate", featuring Nate Dogg.

ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co MEN AT WORK - WHO CAN IT BE NOW
Australian Band Men At Work, recorded this track in 1981 and spurred on by a gold disc for sales in their home country, they released it in the U.S. where it reached No.1.
It failed to make the Top 40 in the UK, stalling at No.45, but reached No.18 in the Irish charts, thanks to airplay on Dublin's RADIO NOVA.
Lead singer Colin Hay wrote the music for "Who Can It Be Now" in a tree house in New South Wales, but the lyrics didn't come until later whwn he was living in an apartment in Victoria, next door to drug dealers.
People would often confuse Hay's apartment for the dealers' and the number of people that would knock on his door unnerved him to the point where he was scared to open it, regardless of who was there. - LJ

An Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Billy released his first solo album, Bad Habits, in June 1981 via WEA in Australia and Europe and CBS in the United States.
The album, which produced two hit singles, the big band style Bad Habits and the ballad You Weren't In Love With Me, turned Billy into one of the most popular acts in Australia in 1981.
The husky-voiced singer, never afraid to mix it up, dared to be a little different and with his breezy style, he got away with it, moving effortlessly from Pop, Rock, Jazz to Big Band Swing.
A RADIO NOVA favourite and much loved by the late Bob Gallico. - LJ

ROBBIE ROBERTSON - SOMEWHERE DOWN THE CRAZY RIVER
A Canadian songwriter, film composer, producer, actor, and author, Robertson is best known for his work as lead guitarist and songwriter for The Band, before his career as a solo recording artist.
As a songwriter, Robertson wrote "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Up on Cripple Creek" while with The Band..
Robertson became a film soundtrack producer and composer, with the rockumentary film The Last Waltz (1978), and continued through a number of dramatic films, including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Casino, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street and The Irishman.
When asked about the inspiration for "Somewhere Down the Crazy River", he says the song was "kind of like a guy with a deep voice telling you about steaming nights in Arkansas".
In the song Robertson is really describing his experiences of hanging out in his old neighbourhood of Arkansas with Levon Helm (fellow member of The Band) during hot nights in which they were "fishing with dynamite" and had asked a local for directions to "somewhere down the crazy river". Singer Maria McKee features in the video.

ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co THE KINKS - COME DANCING.
Written by the group's singer and songwriter Ray Davies and inspired by memories of his older sister, Rene, who died of a heart attack while dancing at the Lyceum ballroom in London's West End.
Rene was visiting her childhood home at the time of Ray Davies' 13th birthday—21 June 1957—on which she surprised him with a gift of the Spanish guitar he had tried to persuade his parents to buy him.
That evening, Rene, who had a weak heart as a result of a childhood bout of rheumatic fever, suffered a fatal heart attack while dancing at the Lyceum.
The single failed on it's U.K. release in 1982, but when re-released in July 1983 due to its immense popularity in America, it peaked at No.12 on the UK singles chart.
In the U.S. the song was a staple of the fledgling MTV network and won an ASCAP award as One of the Most Played Songs of 1983.

PLAYING ON ROTATION at www.RadioNOVAinternational.co STYX - MR. ROBOTO
Written by Styx singer and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung, the track was recorded for the 1983 Styx album Kilroy Was Here.
The song, which tells part of the story of Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (ROCK), in the rock opera Kilroy Was Here, is performed by Dennis DeYoung as Kilroy, a rock and roll performer who was placed in a futuristic prison for "rock and roll misfits" by the anti-rock-and-roll group the Majority for Musical Morality (MMM), where he is assigned to menial jobs.
Kilroy eventually escapes the prison by overpowering a Roboto prison guard and hiding inside its emptied-out metal shell.
When Jonathan Chance (guitarist Tommy Shaw) finally meets Kilroy at the very end of the song, Kilroy unmasks and yells "I'm Kilroy! Kilroy!"
The track was never intended as a single until DeYoung's wife and staff at A&M records suggested that, if edited it could be a hit and it was, reaching U.S. No.28.
The lyric "Dōmo arigatō, Mr. Roboto", entered popular culture as a catchphrase, featuring in movies & TV shows like, Archer, The Simpsons, DodgeBall, and Austin Powers Goldmember.
I played this track so many times on my ALL-NIGHT NOVA show, it will forever remind me of the halcyon days of RADIO NOVA. - LJ

THE STEVE MILLER BAND - ABRACADABRA
The song was inspired by singer Diana Ross, whom Miller had met when they each performed on the same episode of the pop music TV show Hullabaloo in the 1960s.
Diana inspired the lyrics "I heat up, I can't cool down, You got me spinnin' 'round and 'round.
While "Round and round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows" is a reference to the spinning wheel segment from The Original Amateur Hour, Radio & TV show.
The video is one of the most iconic music videos of all time and was shown alongside the birth of MTV, pioneering many aspects of the music video's visual vocabulary and setting a precedent for all videos that followed.

FLEETWOOD MAC - DREAMS
Released on 24 March 1977, the song sold over a million copies and reached No.1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Band member Stevie Nicks wrote the song one day when she wasn't required in the main studio, during a session at Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California.
It was a black-and-red room, with a sunken pit in the middle where there was a piano, and a big black-velvet bed with Victorian drapes.
Stevie sat on the bed with her keyboard in front of her, found a drum pattern, switched her little cassette player on and wrote 'Dreams' in about 10 minutes.
In late 2020, the song experienced a widespread resurgence in popularity as a result of a viral TikTok video of Nathan Apodaca lip syncing to the song while skateboarding down a highway drinking Ocean Spray cran-raspberry juice. A big favourite on Radio Nova 81-86.

ERIC CARMEN - MAKE ME LOSE CONTROL
Carmen's follow up to "Hungry Eyes", his hit from the film Dirty Dancing.
Make Me Lose Control features an underlying yearning for the "sweet songs" of the 1950s and 1960s, mentioning four songs from that era, "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King, "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes, "Back in My Arms Again" by the Supremes and "Uptown", as recorded by Roy Orbison or the song of the same title recorded by the Crystals.
The song reached No.3 on the Billboard on the hot 100, but failed to chart in the U.K. or Ireland.
The music video makes reference to the film American Graffiti by re-creating the scene in which the blonde in the white T-Bird (Suzanne Somers) tells Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) "I love you", and his near-misses with her thereafter.

If the piano intro sounds familiar, it's because it's played by Mike Post who wrote this shortly before writing the theme from Hill Street Blues.
With a vocal by singer songwriter Joey Scarbury the song reached No.2 in the U.S. in 1981.
As a recording artist it was Scarbury's only top 40 hit, but he did write a few hits for other artists including The Oak Ridge Boys, Eddie Rabbitt and Kenny Rogers who enjoyed a big hit in 1982 with Joey's song "Love Will Turn You Around".

HEART - THESE DREAMS
A power ballad with a more polished sound in comparison to Heart's previous work and the first Heart single on which Nancy Wilson performed lead vocals instead of her sister Ann.
The song co-written by Martin Page and Elton John's former songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, was originally offered to Stevie Nicks, who expressed no interest in recording it, but Heart who previously had always recorded their own had previously recorded their own material, were impressed sufficiently impressed by "These Dreams" to use the song on their upcoming 1985 album HEART.

PATTI LaBELLE ft. MICHAEL McDONALD - ON MY OWN
The duet was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and his former wife Carole Bayer Sager and originally recorded by singer Dionne Warwick for inclusion on her 1985 album Friends.
Patti and Mike were actually in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts.
This was reflected in the split screen music video produced to promote the song, which depicted LaBelle and McDonald performing the song simultaneously on different coasts, each singing the song while walking through apartments which had identical layouts but different decor and furniture, the views from their respective porches, where they finished the song, making it clear they were separated by a continent.
The song reached No.1 in the U.S and No.2 in the UK in 1986.

ELBOW BONES & THE RACKETEERS - A NIGHT IN NEW YORK
The band was the creation of August Darnell who also co-founded Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and created Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
"ELBOW" was an American big band-era styled vocal group which featured Stephanie Fuller on lead vocals.
The band was named after writer and photographer John Rynski, who had become friendly with Darnell after working as his stage and lighting man on Kid Creole and the Coconuts tours.
Rynski believed Darnell gave him this nickname as he had "elbowed" his way into Darnell's entourage.
A Night In New York, entered the UK Singles Chart on 14 January 1984, remaining there for nine weeks, peaking at No.33.

CHRISTOPHER CROSS - RIDE LIKE THE WIND
The debut single by the American singer-songwriter, it was released in February 1980 as the lead single from Christopher's Grammy-winning self-titled debut album.
A sort of romanticized western story about a convicted multiple murderer fleeing to Mexico to escape a death-by-hanging sentence.
It was No.2 on the US charts for four consecutive weeks.
Dedicated to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979, the song features backing vocals by Michael McDonald and a guitar solo by Cross.
