Swipe to see how I scaled my business to six figures in one year 👀💭💸

… or not. 😇

I had been freelancing on the side for almost a year before (somewhat accidentally) going full-time.

It’s rewarding in many ways, but incredibly challenging in others.

I still have days where I get frustrated that I’m not doing the things I see people I follow on Instagram or LinkedIn doing - as if there’s a ‘right’ way of doing things!

But I wouldn’t change the past year. I don’t see myself as a failure because I don’t have certain clients, or 6 figures in the bank, or a fancy car (in fact, I have no car, I’m still learning to drive lmao).

I see myself as someone who worked extremely hard to find work, someone who ticked off her career goal of working with a client in the US (multiple times, in fact!), someone who has a wealth of skills and experience she didn’t have this time last year.

Is self employment the long term answer for me? I honestly don’t know. At this point, it’s too early to say. But let’s enjoy the journey ⭐️✈️

This has got to be my most favourite Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce event to date 👀✈️

As a lover of planes it was incredible to get to tour Glasgow Prestwick Airport and learn about its operations. Not only that, but I was able to get close to some of the aircraft I watch on my flight tracking app and scramble to the window to catch a glimpse of. 😂

(I’m going to hold back on the Top Gun references for once)

TikTok and Instagram Reels have in-app editing tools for a reason.

It's easy to get sucked into the video editing apps out there with wild effects and all the typefaces you could ever wish for, but the videos which perform best are the ones which are optimised for Reels/TikTok - and use the distinctive styles of text that come with each platform.

Remember - people aren't looking for Hollywood level productions on short form video platforms! 🎬

(We do love a few funny CapCut templates, however 😏)

Nearly $16.7 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures in the US in 2020, with 11% of women surveyed admitting they were more interested in cosmetic procedures than they were prior to the pandemic (source: Baylor College of Medicine).

This increased interest in plastic surgery after 2020 doesn't come as much of a surprise. In a year which saw much of our lives being moved online and most of our communication happening over Zoom, we spent a lot of time staring at ourselves on camera. 😬

Of course, it's not just social media and Zoom causing problems - TV commercials and magazines were inventing insecurities for us long before the internet was a thing. Having said that, in days gone by we didn't have 24/7 access to people on our phones talking about buccal fat removal 👀

I think it's important for those of us working in the social media space to have conversations about the insecurities we can develop from spending a lot of time online as part of our job. How do you go about setting boundaries between your work and personal social media usage?

You heard it here first - BeReal will add video in 2023 👀

Okay, we don't know that, but video content is still on the rise.

Let’s take a closer look at my predictions:
🔘 Platforms will continue to adapt to accommodate video content. And you should too! Unsure how to? Start by recording little things to do with your business, and if you have an iPhone, make sure you have Live Photos switched on so you can turn photos into little video clips. You never know when this footage will come in handy! And if you’re unsure how to proceed, there are plenty of social media marketers who would love to help you out 😇😇

🔘 Be original - in 2023, the algorithm will continue to reward originality as opposed to following trends. That’s not to say you can’t hop on trends which are relevant to you and your business, but you want to be investing more time into original content which showcases your brand’s personality.

🔘 Brands will start to behave more like creators. This is happening already - we’re seeing more and more brands interacting with their audiences, hosting livestreams and web shows, and featuring team members in their content. Consumers don’t want to be explicitly sold to, they want to feel like part of the brand.

Clinging on to your last few days of holiday? Back at work already? Starting to look ahead?

Whatever your situation, I’ve put together a quick list of tasks to complete to ensure a smooth start to 2023. You might want to save this post for when it’s time to get back to your desk 🤭

🔘 check everything is up to date - your website, all your social media channels, all platforms you sell on
🔘 clear out the storage on your phone and/or computer to free up some space
🔘 organise and tidy your folders
🔘 new year, new me - do your social media templates need a refresh?
🔘 revise your ideal client persona - this will be beneficial when it comes to strategy planning or scheduling content

So, what can you expect from Fangirl in the coming year? Bigger and better. A focus on video content. New packages and services. Keep your eyes peeled! 👀

Wow, okay - we’re approaching the end of another year! Time to treat myself to a self indulgent post. 🫠

2022 was the year I became self employed almost accidentally. The year I took on my first long term clients. The year I went from Chloe Hendrie Media to Fangirl Social (a glow up, if you ask me). ✈️

I’m not going to pretend it’s all been smooth sailing. Self employment is wonderful in many ways, but I’ve had to deal with the not so desirable elements of it too - learning to do my own taxes, not having a stable income for months, the amount of unpaid admin work you have to do as a self employed person - that’s something people don’t really talk about! 🫣

Alas, I’m truly grateful for this path I’m on and for everyone I’ve worked with this year - and everyone who has offered me support along the way! I can’t wait to see you all in 2023 🥂
