Bassam Sawalhi, an engineer with the Jerusalem Water Undertaking, which sources water from the Israelis and produces its own supplies for about 400,000 Palestinians in 56 communities, highlighted the urgent water shortage faced by Palestinians. He explained how Israeli authorities deny Palestinian water authorities licenses to operate freely in Israeli-controlled areas, severely limiting access to water resources. As a result, Palestinians are seeking licenses for additional wells in the West Bank to address this pressing issue.
This was reported by AlJazeera in July 2021, far before October 7.
باسم سوالحي، مهندس في مؤسسة مياه القدس، التي تستورد المياه من الإسرائيليين وتنتج إمداداتها الخاصة لحوالى 400،000 فلسطيني في 56 مجتمعاً.
يشرح سوالحي كيف تمنع السلطات الإسرائيلية الفلسطينيين من الحصول على تراخيص للعمل بحرية في المناطق التي تسيطر عليها إسرائيل، ما يقيد بشكل كبير الوصول إلى موارد المياه. ونتيجة لذلك، يسعى الفلسطينيون الى الحصول على تراخيص لآبار إضافية في الضفة الغربية لمعالجة هذه المشكلة الملحة، وذلك بحسب ما ذكرته قناة الجزيرة في تموز/ يوليو 2021، قبل فترة طويلة من تاريخ 7 تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر.

هذه إحدى محطتي الضخ التابعتين لشركة “ميكوروت” خارج قرية “بردلة”. وقد أدت هاتانه المحطتان إلى جفاف الينابيع في قريتي عين البيضا وبردلة بشكل تام، مما أرغم المجتمع الفلسطيني على الاعتماد كلياً على الشركة المملوكة للدولة لتوفير المياه اللازمة للأغراض المنزلية والزراعية.
This is one of two Mekorot pumping stations outside the village of Bardala. These pumping stations have caused springs in the villages of Ein al-Beida and Bardala to dry up completely, forcing the Palestinian community to be entirely reliant on the Israeli state-owned company for their domestic and agricultural water provision.

In the Jordan Valley numerous springs and wells have been made redundant as the Mountain Aquifer on the western edge of the valley is increasingly exploited by the Israeli-state owned company Mekorot.

Soap makers in Tripoli told us that there was a time when they relied on the abundant water from the nearby river for their production. El Nino is a weather phenomenon in the Southern Hemisphere caused by a change in the normal weather pattern, which can result in flooding, drought, famine, and mass die-offs of marine life. It affects the whole globe and can last from 9-12 months, with some rare instances lasting years.
