Say the name, Marilyn and only one woman comes to mind; the sultry, iconic Marilyn Monroe who in 1952 was the first woman to lead the Miss America Beauty Pageant Parade down the boardwalk as its Grand Marshal.

The most famous picture was of her sitting on the back of an American Rambler convertible waving to her adoring fans along the parade route.

Of course, it wasn’t just her beauty and fame that propelled her to be the Grand Marshall. There is always an ulterior motive, and in the entertainment business there always seems to be a motive. In this case, her presence was arranged as part of 20th Century Fox’s promotion to launch her latest film, “Monkey Business”.

Famous for playing comedic bombshell characters, she became one of the most popular s*x symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s.

She also starred in some major productions such as “Some Like It Hot”, “ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “The Seven Year Itch” and “How To Marry A Millionaire”.

She was married to the famed New York Yankees star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller as well as an earlier marriage at a very young age when she was called by her given name, Norma Jean. Besides her marriages, she was known to be friends and have “relationships” with many well-known people such as Frank Sinatra as well as President John. F Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy. If you are “of a certain age” you will never forget her breathless rendition of “Happy Birthday” sung to President Kennedy on that occasion.

She was quoted many times but one of her most famous was: Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world. She died in 1962 under what could only be described as very unknown and suspicious causes. However, if you were at the Miss America Pageant Parade in 1952, seeing Marilyn in her breezy, windblown dress, the image will always remain. None of the rest matters.
