On July 21, 1959, the first nuclear powered merchant ship, NS Savannah, was launched in Camden, with First Lady Mamie Eisenhower in attendance, after construction at the shipyard of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship was built with the active support of President Eisenhower as an example of how nuclear power could be utilized for peaceful purposes. The ship was in service for eight years, and is currently preserved for public viewing in Baltimore.

On July 11, 1804 Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton during a pistol duel in Weehawken.

After Hamilton was taken across the Hudson to Manhattan, he died the next day, with his age believed to be 47 or 49 due to uncertainty relating to the date of his birth out of wedlock. Burr was indicted for murder in New Jersey, but the charge was dismissed on appeal. The same site in Weehawken was used for 18 known duels between 1700 and 1845, including the 1801 duel that killed Hamilton's eldest son Philip Hamilton.

On July 5 of 1900
Shortly after midnight, a fire started by a lightning strike on a tavern and boarding house in Bayonne spreads to the nearby refinery complex of the Standard Oil Co., causing extensive damage to the refinery and the city. On the next day, Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller comes to Bayonne to view the fire, which continues for 70 hours.

On June 30 of 1900, a fire on the Hoboken docks killed at least 326 persons in and around piers of Germany's Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company. The fire began when cotton bales stored on NDL’s southernmost wharf caught fire, and winds carried the flames to nearby barrels of volatile liquids, such as turpentine and oil, which exploded in rapid succession, gutting nearby warehouses and three of NDL’s major transatlantic liners.

This week On May 26, 1998, the US Supreme Court ruled in the case of New Jersey v. New York 523 U.S. 767 (1998) that New Jersey had jurisdiction over all portions of Ellis island created by landfill after the original compact between the two states in 1834 was approved, over 80% of the island's present land.

On May 6 , 1937, the German Zeppelin Hindenburg bursted into flames as it hovered to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. It was quickly consumed in the fire, with 36 killed, including one ground worker. The cause was never conclusively determined, but is attributed by various analysts to static electricity, lightning or sabotage.
