Microorganisms Can be Used to Make Cement which Can Store CO2
My first introduction to sustainability was producing negative carbon materials: Dr Stephen Wilkinson
"I started off life working as a #Geologist, and my journey started at a #coal mine. I have friends who are into #petroleum and #mining, which are key sectors undergoing a #majorchange," Dr Stephen Wilkinson, Director of Research & Head of the Smart and Sustainable Cities Research Cluster, University of Wollongong in Dubai, said.
Speaking at the Sustainability Middle East conference held in #Dubai recently, Dr Wilkinson said that his first introduction to #sustainability was producing #negative #carbon #materials and advancing #research on it.
"I worked on #electromagnetic #imaging of #mud to understand it in detail, with structure. So, these are my fields of expertise - #Geology, and #microimaging," he said.
Dr Wilkinson's first area of research was how we can start using #biological life, in order to carry out processes for #engineering - this is Applied #GeoMicrobiology.

We Look at Sustainability Challenges we are Facing, Not What Is Causing That
Why not have a business model where I can use the vehicle whenever I need it. And by this way I don’t own it, I don’t go into depreciation: Raji Hattar
Host and Moderator of Sustainability Middle East Conference 2023, Karl W Feilder posed a question during the event: What do you think are the major challenges stopping us from achieving sustainability targets?
To this question, Mr Raji Hattar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Aramex said that we need to start looking at the root causes of the challenges we face.
He said: "We hear about enhancing the range of EVs so that people would accept it more. I would look at it from a different angle - Why would I buy an EV for 200,000 dirham, while I use it for one or two hours a day?"
Mr Hattar added: "Why not a business model where I can use the vehicle whenever I need it. And by this way I don’t own it, I don’t go into depreciation or I don’t have full months commitment of leasing."
The same thing can apply to our purchasing habits, he added. #sustainability #sustainabilitymiddleeast #sme

Need to Make this Planet a Better Place for Everyone, Not Just a Few
To a question about degrowth, posed by Regional Expert on Biofuels, Karl W. Feilder, at the Sustainability Middle East conference, CFO Middle East and Africa at DHL, Tobias Maier said it is a good sign that there is awareness and a consensus about #sustainability.
He added: "There is so much opportunity in leveraging technology and exploring new stuff. There are so many people in the planet and we need to make it a better place for everyone and not just a few."
Need to Get Everybody Involved to Get the Sustainability Ball Rolling
During the recently held Sustainability Middle East annual conference, CFO Middle East and Africa at DHL, Tobias Maier highlighted how different segments of #businesses are working towards cutting down #emissions.
To a question by Regional Expert on Biofuels, Karl W Feilder on this topic, Mr Maier said that the #sustainability strategies vary with size of the businesses.
Karl W Feilder: #Governments set #netzero targets - but how far along are small and big businesses and individuals, in the region?
Tobias Maier: "It all depends on the individual situation and whether one can afford it. People who are aware of the issue, and can afford it - they go for #green solutions, very frequently.
"In #B2B setting, it is a different proposition. When you work for smaller enterprises, many of them will be tuning every Dirham, and very often consider whether they can consider to spend more on sustainable solutions.
"And in case of big corporates, who are aware of the issue and have similar ambitions like we have, aware of their reputation - they actively work on becoming more #sustainable.
"We try to create and showcase solutions and get everybody involved to get the ball rolling."

Resources of the Planet are Not Being Used Optimally
Sir Malachi Halliday CEO and Founder, HALLIDAY GROWTH believes that degrowth as a strategy for sustainability is overrated.
Speaking at a panel discussion titled - Sustainability Today: Themes To Look For In 2023, during the Sustainability Middle East - Future of Sustainability Conference, he said that we are using a lot of resources in ways that are frivolous.
To a question about credibility of degrowth as a strategy, posed by the Moderator of the Session, Karl W Feilder, Sir Halliday said that “it was largely unnecessary”.
He said: "It was incredibly selfish from the #economies that have already experienced growth at the expense of the environment, asking other economies which are not yet as developed, to sacrifice their growth."
However, from a more solutions-focussed perspective, it was largely unnecessary.
Sir Halliday added: "A lot of our #energy consumption goes out as #wasteheat, from the moment the #fuel is extracted from the ground and burnt in the #car, etc. Our #efficiency, in how we use a lot of the resources of this #planet, is sub-optimal."

With the Vision of a Sustainable Future Volvo is Proactively Investing in R&D
Volvo Group sincerely believes there is no future in fossil fuels: Kivanc Karayol
None of us are experts about when the fossil fuels are going to go away from our lives. But according to many respectable researches, by 2050 to 2060, we are not going to have fossil fuels, that we can fill our equipment or passenger cars, said Kivanc Karayol, Market Director & Electromobility Champion, Volvo Group Volvo Trucks
Mr Karayol was speaking at a panel discussion titled - SUSTAINABILITY TODAY: THEMES TO LOOK FOR IN 2023, during the Sustainability Middle East - Future of Sustainability Conference, held in Dubai on March 9, 2023.
Responding to a question posed by Moderator of the session, Karl W Feilder, Regional expert on biofuels, he said that Volvo Group like any other corporate entity is a profit generating company, profit for the organisation, its employees and stakeholders.
"But the main target is that we sincerely believe, we are not going to be making money from fossil fuels in the future. That's the reason why we need to be extremely proactive in investing our income in research and development."
"This will help us produce bio-diesel trucks. We can produce #electrictrucks, #LNG and other alternative fuel-based vehicles at affordable prices," said Mr Karayol.
But is this feasible and commercially viable? The answer is no. The components of a vehicle using alternative fuels are not as affordable as compared to diesel engines, he added.
"Last year, we had manufactured more than 150,000 trucks and Volvo is always one of the big players, not just in the #MiddleEast and #Turkey, but across the world. Regardless, very little portion of this number of trucks actually has a net-zero carbon emission,” Mr Karayol added.
Sustainability is definitely a very complex subject and money is really important for achieving it. But we need to understand, if the world continues like this, we will lose our health and that of our next generation. #VolvoTrucks

Helping Traditional Models Shift to Sustainable Business Practices
During the Sustainability Middle East annual conference held recently in #Dubai, Regional Expert on #Biofuels, Karl W. Feilder sought to know about #carbonemission #accountability from a panel of #businessleaders. Excerpts of the discussion…
Karl W Feilder: How do we move from banks asking people for their last three years financial accounts, to asking them give their last three years #carbon accounts?
Malachi Halliday: This has been very challenging especially when we are #financing companies at a smaller scale. For larger corporates there is certainly larger infrastructure in place. The key to this lies in #monitoring.
For the smaller end of the businesses we are looking at quantifying their impact, specifically on the carbon account through factoring their #carboncredits.
“We are helping shift traditional business models into more #sustainable business models,” he added.
It is a matter of concern that we have lost 69% of our #wildlife in the last 50 years, and it is getting worse. The #oceans are expected to be 150% more #acidic by 2100. All of these issues, directly affect us from an investment perspective, Sir Halliday further added.
