Where is the outcry?

Another 12 bodies were found off Tunisia's coast, bringing the death toll of the latest shipwreck to 34. Still many more are missing.

Europe's borders are built on the killing & disappearing of black bodies.

also in the Mediterranean!

08/06/2020

BLACK LIVES MATTER

And yet, there are more than 20.000 black bodies, somewhere on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Lives not worth saving.

So far, 0,005% of the world population died due to Corona. After more than 9 years of fighting, the death toll of the Syrian war is 2-2,8%. World War II took the lives of 3% of the world population. People who get on a boat to travel irregularly from North Africa to Europe have a death risk of 4.78%.

It is the deadliest border crossing in the world.

And Europe does whatever it can to make it more dangerous, with success. There used to be an Italian mission (Mare Nostrum), rescuing boats in distress. It was cancelled because politicians were more afraid to be accused of facilitating migration than being guilty of thousands of deaths. NGOs jumped in the vacuum to take over the duty of rescuing humans at risk of drowning. Although it's a crime not to help a boat in distress, their work has been made increasingly difficult, if not impossible. Rescue workers are criminally charged, boats are locked into harbours and thus hindered from rescue, boats full of saved people are forbidden to return to Italy or Malta.

Usually, saving lives is heroic. But when you save a black migrant, you're a criminal.

Europe pays Libya, a country fighting a cruel civil war and famous for the enslavement, torture and r**e of migrants, to stop migrant boats and push them back. Europe will do whatever it takes to avoid a boat full of Africans arriving safely in Europe.

While people across Europe mourn the death of George Floyd and protest the excessive, racist police violence that plagues the USA, we hope this rage also extends to our own policies. There may be no videos of African migrants being pushed down and choked by European police, but their deaths are just as real, their lives just as lost, their families just as devastated.

If a leaky boat full of white people would be in distress, letting them drown would not be an option, ever. We have to ask ourselves why the standards for black people are so goddam different.

EU, stop killing black migrants. Stop using death as a deterrence strategy.

This is one way that we can try and make a difference. Sign now to urge Europe to act : over 40 000 refugees and migrants are currently hemmed in on Greek islands in inhumane conditions. Their problems are ours too, if we turn our backs, it is worse in the end for us all.

IT'S GETTING FREAKING COLD TONIGHT
(and we are freaking out)

After an everlasting summer and a mild autumn in Sarajevo, winter is finally going to hit and it will hit hard. All the way down to -11°C with loads of snow and thousands of homeless refugees spread over Bosnia.

Croatian and Slovenian border police are hunting on migrants like animals, more refugees are stuck in Bosnia this winter and authorities do whatever they can to disencourage them from staying. That means no extra beds in camps and little tolerance for support on the streets.

In Sarajevo, hundreds of human beings are sleeping outside, under bridges and in ruins every single night, and no escape from the Balkan until the snow melts in spring. This is not just sad or inconvenient - this is dangerous.

We can not leave fellow humans in lethally dangerous conditions. People need blankets, socks, shoes, jackets and jumpers. Sleeping bags, long johns, hats and gloves. At best an insulated house and some firewood to get the worst cold out of their bones. And we are very, very happy that our friends from Fresh Response will make it happen.

Please consider supporting their work! With all the other NGOs banned or gone, they will be the only shape of assistance for refugees in Sarajevo. Your donation will be used directly for buying life-saving sleeping bags, blankets and clothes. Donate through Woody's account, he is there right now and will go on the first blanket distribution this very night. No matter how small your donation, you can make a massive impact on someone who is fighting against hypothermia on a daily basis.

€6 for a decent blanket
€12 for a cheap sleeping bag
€36 for 3 sleeping bags OR 6 blankets

39 people have been killed. These people had mothers, fathers, siblings, stories, hopes and fears.
"In the past six years, figures show more than 33,700 deaths. This figure is considered indicative of the human cost of unsafe migration but is likely to underreport the actual number of people who have died or gone missing during migration."
This is shocking and disgusting. If 39 people were murdered in Britain who were British, I wonder how different the public and media reaction would be.
Be critical of what you do and don't read. Do what you can, within your power, to make the world a better place.

For anyone with no understanding of what's happening to Kurds right now, here's a little (simplified) history lesson for you....

Kurds have been living on the land they call home now for thousands of years. After WW1 and the fall off the Ottoman Empire, the British and French promised Kurds they could continue to reside in those areas peacefully because they intended to create a country called Kurdistan. They went back on that promise and carved up the Kurdish homeland with the creation of some new countries, meaning that the Kurdistan was split between Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria.

All four of those countries have persecuted their Kurdish populations ever since. Turkey has committed the worst atrocities during that time, and up until recently, the Kurdish language, Kurdish names, and more were all banned. Turkey even refuses to call the people Kurds, and refers to them as "Mountain Turks" - a slur designed to brand Kurdish people as barbaric and uneducated.

Thousands of Kurds lost their lives during the 80s and 90s fighting against their Turkish oppressions, and yet the situation barely improved.

During the first Gulf War, the US encouraged Kurds to rise up against Saddam Hussein, but then failed to protect them when they did, resulting in thousands being murdered with chemical weapons.

Cue the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

When the US, UK and other Western countries invaded Iraq, Kurds fought alongside the allies, and against Saddam's army. They managed to create an autonomous region in Iraq because of it. When ISIS began grabbing mass amounts of land in Iraq, the Kurds fought back with allied assistance and stamped them out.

When ISIS started taking land and murdering thousands in Syria, the Syrian President Assad ordered his army to leave the region and he left millions of Kurds there to die. They would have done too if it weren't for the assistance of coalition air strikes and weapons that allowed them to push ISIS back and carve out another autonomous region in their homeland.

That region is Rojava. The people there live under a system called Democratic Confederalism which is based on workers' rights, equality, feminism, and ecology. In principal, this version of democracy is far more democratic than any system used in a Western country today.

The Kurds didn't want to team up with the US in Syria, they just didn't want to die, and they were left with no option after being abandoned by Assad.

Now the US has abandoned the Kurds and left them to die too. They're no longer "useful" and heaven forbid America is seen to be assisting a people who don't bow to the international banking cartel, and are determined to live in a real democracy.

The US said it wanted to bring "democracy" to the Middle East, but not THAT sort of democracy.

Assad and Russia refuse to back Kurds now because they worked with the US instead of being murdered. And Turkey (the biggest oppressor of the Kurdish people, and the country that literally funded ISIS) has invaded their land with one of the largest armies in NATO with the intention of ethnic cleansing, genocide and freeing ISIS prisoners.

The Kurdish people just can't win. Every major global power uses them when it suits their agenda, and then they feed them to the wolves.

The US won't stand up for the Kurds. The Syrian Government won't stand up for them, and neither will Iran or Russia. That is why every single person with a heart reading this must raise their voice now!

There's an old Kurdish saying that goes:

"NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS"

Please show our Kurdish brothers and sisters that isn't true. Do everything you can. I beg you.

Edit: Since writing this post, Kurds have been forced to reluctantly sign a deal with Assad that will mean Syrian troops move to the border to fight off the Turkish invasion. While this means fewer Kurds will die, it also essentially puts an end to the Kurdish autonomous region of Rojava 😢

12/08/2019

Yet more evidence of violent and illegal push-backs happening still in Croatia. Find out what a push-back is and why it is ILLEGAL in Episode 2 of People on the Move.

The authorities of the Bosnian canton that borders Croatia have announced they will begin monitoring and recording incidents of violence against migrants by the Croatian authorities. The decision comes in the wake of the violent pushback of 18 migrants on Tuesday, with 6 migrants receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries, with the remaining 12 sustaining light injuries.

A Border Violence Monitoring volunteer affiliated with No Name Kitchen spoke to one of the group who described that they were apprehended in Croatia close to the Slovenian border and driven around in a windowless van without air conditioning for the whole afternoon before being brought to the border near Velika Kladuša (BiH).

"Two of the Croatian officers who picked the group up from Croatia were standing to the left and right of the van’s door. A couple of meters away from the first two officers, there were two new police officers dressed in black uniforms and were standing in the same line as the first two police. They took the men out of the car two by two.
The officers in blue beat them with batons from both sides and pushed them towards their other colleagues in black, who continued to beat them with sticks and kicked them down a hill towards the border."

According to the respondent, the total of people being pushed back in this incident was 23 while only 18 were found by the Bosnian authorities and taken to the hospital. Five heavily injured male individuals from Irak and other Arabic speaking countries were pushed back without any media attention, just as many other refugees and migrants who are exposed to this unlawful treatment by EU member state authorities on a daily basis.

The Croatian Ministry of the Interior has denied that force was used against the 18 migrants, stating that the migrants were discovered at the state border and prevented from crossing.

However, just as many other testimonies that the Border Violence Monitoring Network collected so far, instead of a mere prevention, this one reveals logistic processes and a well-coordinated crossdivisional distribution of tasks within the machinery of systematic deterrence along the EU's external border with Bosnia.
