In November Amazon KDP suddenly shut down my account. This was the third time in as many years and despite my appeal, the account remains closed. I do continue to sell books on Barnes and Noble BN.com under the author names: Simple Cents Journals, Perpetual Puzzler, and Andrea Polk.

Thank you for your support and while it was tough to see hundreds of books disappear from Amazon's international audience, I've shifted gears into creating assets for other print-on-demand creators.

If you are a KDP bookseller, just keep in mind that you should diversify so if this happens to you it's not the end, but rather a lesson to carry you forward.

Some life lessons are unexpected and spirit-crushing. One of those happened last month when Amazon terminated the publisher account of Simple Cents Journals and all associated author names. This meant that over 800 books, published over several years, were removed from sale on Amazon. In the future, no new publisher account can be created, and all residual royalties have not been, nor will be paid.

The reason for the termination is related to the KDP terms and conditions and metadata; using "MLB" in a title. I published journals using public domain images of old baseball-playing cards over two years ago without issue. When I went to update the keywords for these books it flagged them in the KDP system. The books were blocked, I provided the info on the Public Domain images, the books were unblocked and I unpublished them to avoid any further issues. Prior to this, the account had been terminated once before when KDP mistakenly flagged a book - not one I'd published (a completely different publisher) - and then reinstated the account without an "oops" on their part.

I've recently learned many other self-publishers have also recently had their accounts terminated in a similar way, some making six figures a year from Amazon self-published books.

Suffice to say despite my best efforts to give them what they wanted to remedy the issue, and having that OK'd by them only to have the account suddenly shut down a few weeks later over the same issue with no further explanation, it's done, and a reversal without costly mediation is not possible.

The good news, Amazon offered a tremendous learning experience, and all the books created on Amazon by Simple Cents Journals, Simple Remembrances, Ann Everett, and Andrea Polk can be republished elsewhere.

Currently, you can search for the names above on Barnes and Noble to see books as they are relisted.
