Let's visit Umberto Pasti, the Milanese gardener and writer in the heart of Jbala country 🌿

Behind a grey wooden door framed by whitewashed walls at the bottom of the Vieille Montagne, Umberto Pasti, a gardener and writer from Milan, welcomes Stéphanie Gaou to his Tangier haven, Tbarek Allah. Here, softness, calm and voluptuousness reign. There, less than an hour from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, after Asilah, perched on the hills of Jbala country, sits a sunny garden facing the sea in the village of Rohuna, which Umberto designed entirely with the help of the villagers. Since then, this modern-day Hercules has been working to restore the Garden of the Hesperides to its former glory, on Moroccan farmland.

📚 Don't miss the exclusive interview with Umberto Pasti and the fascinating StĂ©phanie Gaou in issue 04 of I Came For Couscous, whom we look forward to seeing at the Marrakech African Book Festival from February 8 to 11, with the complete I Came For Couscous collection on her stand les insolites officiel.

“To be an Arab, and Iraqi, born in , is something very special and unique to me. These origins allow me to really understand my musical heritage, as a DJ. My place of birth formed my musical taste, my understanding of sound and voices in general, which is something that I did not realise growing up, but that I fully appreciate now. From DJ Snake to DJ Khaled, it is very important to take notice of the Arab talent that is now creating global de- mand across generations to come.”

M. How would you say “I love you”?
F. We say “I love you” a lot in English. Even in The Other Story project, a lot of the love stories are written in English, because people feel more comfortable speaking about their feelings in a foreign language, as if there’s a wall. But when we say it in Arabic, there’s a deeper signi"cance, a power. ! ŰŁŰŰšÙƒ

M. Comment diriez-vous « Je t’aime » ?
F. On dit beaucoup “Love you”, en anglais. ! ŰŁŰŰšÙƒ

"One of my favorite projects is the Urban Pigeon Tower, built as part of Amman Design Week 2019. It is part of a bigger umbrella project that explores structures for urban wildlife and aims at bringing animals back into the realm of city planning and urban agriculture – a call to expand our urban compassion footprint and rewild the city as a rich multi-species ecosystem."

Conversation / Back and Forth: Kamal Hachkar & Philippe Bellaïche
Hachkar and Philippe BellaĂŻche, both active in political and social causes, discuss multiple topics: Moroccan Jewish identity, otherness, exile, and observational documentary films, a medium that each uses to challenge political realities and restore nobility to voices that have been quieted or silenced.

Full Interview

M You have gathered hundreds of anonymous letters since 2015 in Jeddah, and you exhibited them during a performance at the Do Disturb Festival at the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, in 2018. [
.] How did this project start? What made you want to collect these stories in the first place?
F Simply to share humanity and soul. While pursuing my master’s degree, I was studying with a very eclectic group of students from all around the world. That’s when I realized the power of stories, through which we share so much more than we ever think we do. There are so many views about cinema, journalism, documentaries... but I wanted this project to be raw. I didn’t want to write for you; I wanted you to write. And even in the book, as well as at Palais de Tokyo and during other performances, I never edited the stories.

Façade of the Cabaret El Djazair, 27 rue de la Huchette, 5th arrondissement, Paris, 1955. Emblematic institution of the Maghrebian music scene in this Paris of the interwar period.

Mohamed El Kourd laboured by day in the Renault factory on Ile Seguin but spent his nights working his piano wizardry and enlivening the scene at the famous El-Djazaïr cabaret. The great Algerian miniaturist illustrator Sid-Ali Temmam, then a student at the School of Decorative Arts, and who had chiselled the club with its old-time Moorish plaster patterns, recalls: “One night, after Mohamed El Kourd’s set, I saw Mistinguett personally request that he sign a dedication on the drum skin of the percussionist.” As for Temmam, it was in this enchanted place that he met his future wife, Bahia Farah, an Algerian Berber from Bouira and accomplished performer in her own right.
