Let's visit Umberto Pasti, the Milanese gardener and writer in the heart of Jbala country 🌿

Behind a grey wooden door framed by whitewashed walls at the bottom of the Vieille Montagne, Umberto Pasti, a gardener and writer from Milan, welcomes Stéphanie Gaou to his Tangier haven, Tbarek Allah. Here, softness, calm and voluptuousness reign. There, less than an hour from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, after Asilah, perched on the hills of Jbala country, sits a sunny garden facing the sea in the village of Rohuna, which Umberto designed entirely with the help of the villagers. Since then, this modern-day Hercules has been working to restore the Garden of the Hesperides to its former glory, on Moroccan farmland.

My place of birth formed my musical taste, my understanding of sound and voices in general, which is something that I did not realise growing up, but that I fully appreciate now. Even in The Other Story project, a lot of the love stories are written in English, because people feel more comfortable speaking about their feelings in a foreign language, as if there’s a wall. But when we say it in Arabic, there’s a deeper signi"cance, a power. ! ŰŁŰ­ŰšÙƒ

F. On dit beaucoup “Love you”, en anglais. MĂȘme dans The Other Story Project, beaucoup d’histoires d’amour sont Ă©crites en anglais, car les gens se sentent plus Ă  l’aise de parler de leurs sentiments dans une langue Ă©trangĂšre, comme s’il y avait un mur. It is part of a bigger umbrella project that explores structures for urban wildlife and aims at bringing animals back into the realm of city planning and urban agriculture – a call to expand our urban compassion footprint and rewild the city as a rich multi-species ecosystem."

M You have gathered hundreds of anonymous letters since 2015 in Jeddah, and you exhibited them during a performance at the Do Disturb Festival at the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, in 2018. [
.] How did this project start? What made you want to collect these stories in the first place?
F Simply to share humanity and soul. While pursuing my master’s degree, I was studying with a very eclectic group of students from all around the world. That’s when I realized the power of stories, through which we share so much more than we ever think we do. There are so many views about cinema, journalism, documentaries... but I wanted this project to be raw. I didn’t want to write for you; I wanted you to write. And even in the book, as well as at Palais de Tokyo and during other performances, I never edited the stories.
