The importance of a mere pinch of salt, greatly surges at the dinning table when it's missing from a dish!
The dish, however, may look mouth watering. It may have been presented well too. But it looses all its charm on you if it is without salt.
Just like that when we miss out on our communication, no matter how good we are prepared, what will pinch us the most, is inability to communicate effectively.
Good Communication Skills are not just important for your growth but also to understand others! A lot can be sorted, addressed, rectified or even created when an idea is clearly communicated to the team.
Here are few steps that you can follow to have Effective Communication Skills:
Keep It Short and Simple
Although this sounds too simple but it ain’t simple at all. To quote from a famous Bollywood movie Bawarchi - It is so simple to be difficult but so difficult to be simple! Keep your communication simple by using simple words for understanding. No one likes a Shakespeare in the room. To be or not to be…
Body Language
The most easiest way to communicate effectively is though the right Body Language. Ensure that you do not cross your hands or have a negative tone or words while communicating. Instead, use an open palm gestures should you need to point during a conversation. What you must understand is, people may not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you said it.
Assumption is Deadly
Sometimes we assume that we already know it or we have a preconceived notion about what is being discussed. End result, we stop listening. Assumption has ended great relationships and partnerships. So Stop Assuming and Start Listening!
In the words of Dalai Lama - "When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”
Find Out The Barriers
Even with the latest technology we may still face some technical difficulties while communicating. So check the connections and if possible re-dial or re-connect the Zoom session! Other issues could also rise up like - biases, stereotyping people basis colour, cast, creed etc.
We live a diversified world now, so cultural difference can become a barrier too in the offices. A session on - ‘Sensitivity Towards Other Cultures’ can really help.
Happy Learning
