Smiing at Fear will be the title of a new non-fiction book telling the stories of people who survived the notorious Children of God cult.
We have a very special new project coming up, but it needs a little help from our friends
SMILING AT FEAR is the title of the first in a series of 3 books that will tell some of the many stories of people who were survivors of The Family International/Children of God cult.
Sandy Ellis, the editor of the series, was a whistleblower on the cult's activities in Australia in the 1990s, and is one of many ex-members still trying to have the cult's leader Karen Zerby tried for her crimes.
"In their pursuit of power and prominence, Berg and Zerby unmercifully unleashed a torrent of exploitation and abuse upon their misguided followers, and their innocent children. Their legacy is overwhelmingly one of ruin, loss, death and deceit.
But fortunately, there are those who’ve fought to break free from this cult, to fully emancipate themselves from its ideology and practices, and who've carved out new lives for themselves and their loved ones, guided and strengthened by the one thing this cult could never destroy - their hope; their determination for better and happier lives. This Hope Series is about them and their stories of struggle and triumph, told in their own voices and on their own terms."
The series aims to shine a light for anyone who is struggling with the effects of trauma, by telling stories of survival.

Wendy's true passion is to help other women, and she has been busy doing just that. She's using what she's learned to shine light into the lives of those who feel lost in the dark.

It’s very very very very very very very very very very very very good.
I liked how every chapter made you want to read more. I was lying in bed, Mum was reading it to me and I kept saying ‘Read the next chapter read the next chapter.’
I also liked the part where they went into Ipswich I liked how she went into the bathroom and used the free wi-fi that was funny.
I liked how it’s just one topic. Summer Brook Spring is about a cow and a calf and a girl moving to Australia. It’s just one topic, when there’s more than one its messy. This makes it more interesting to find out what happens next.
At the start I thought Freya was a bit snobby, like spoilt because she was just hating everything. Then when Emma and Freya first met and Freya said we’re staying for a year so it won’t be that long and Emma seemed really sad. I liked that because Emma seems really sweet and kind.
