Islay & Jura Whisky Group Trip Details

Travel with me to the beautiful Scottish islands of Islay and Jura!

Islay, often referred to as Scotland’s whisky island, is famous for its world-class distilleries producing distinctive peaty whiskies beloved worldwide. Just across the water is Jura, a wild and remote island, home to over 5,000 deer that roam freely across its hills and moors.

I’ve designed an itinerary that captures the very best of these islands, showcasing all the highlights you’d want to experience on your first visit. From distillery visits and warehouse tastings, to the finest accommodation and dining experiences, every detail has been hand-chosen by me.

My group trips are designed to feel like a journey with friends, with opportunities for shared experiences as well as time to explore at your own pace.

Here is a summary of the Islay & Jura Whisky Group Trip:

Scotland’s canals.

Once the arteries for moving goods, people, and raw materials.

However, with the rise of railway system, all that changed and many canals became abandoned and neglected.

I recently visited Falkirk, where the Firth & Clyde Canal, which connects Scotland’s east and west coasts, and the Union Canal, which provides a connection to Edinburgh, join.

In recent years there has been work to restore Scotland’s canals and The Falkirk wheel was built. It’s the world’s only rotating boat lift, which joins these two canals together, replacing 11 locks which had fallen into disrepair.

While in Falkirk, I also walked through the 630m Falkirk tunnel, Scotland’s longest canal tunnel which is known to be a bit eerie and scary!

I also finally visited the Kelpies, one of Scotland’s iconic attractions. In mythology, “kelpies” are shape-shifting water spirits said to haunt Scotland’s lochs and rivers, often taking the form of horses. However, the sculptures symbolise the vital role of heavy horses like Clydesdales and Shires in Scotland’s industrial past and they looked so impressive all lit up at night!

Cottage life on a Scottish island 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I had the best few days staying in this cosy little cottage on Scotland’s Isle of Mull.

The Isle of Mull is known for its wildlife and I finally saw an otter…! I was almost convinced otters didn’t exist as I’ve searched far and wide over the last 18 months for otters. 😂

My own private beach 😍

Flashback to my 10-day trip to Orkney last year where I came across this beautiful beach on the Isle of Westray and had it all to myself!

I even went in for a swim and yes the water was freezing! 🥶😂

Puffin Paradise On Fair Isle 🏝️

I’ve been looking through some photos from trips I’ve taken this year and came across these cute puffin photos.

While on Fair Isle, I stayed at a guesthouse run by the wonderful and after dinner one evening we went to the northern lighthouse to watch puffins and the sunset.

This was my first time managing to take photos of puffins with sand eels. They fish for them and bring them back to the burrows in the cliffs for the baby puffins which are called pufflings, how cute is that name!

I’ve yet to see a puffling but I’m adding that to my bucket list! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A funny story is that I was actually due to be born on this day and if I’d been a boy, I would’ve been called Andrew!

However, I decided to turn up fashionably late and I wasn’t a boy! 😂

There are so many lovely views in Scotland but this is one of my favourites. 😍

The Paps of Jura are three prominent hills on the Isle of Jura on Scotland’s west coast, with the highest of them being 785m.

From Islay you can get great views over to Jura, especially from Bunnahabhain Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery. I took this photo while on the short ten-minute ferry between Islay and Jura.

A little winter trip to Islay 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is my fourth time on Islay and every time I return to this beautiful Scottish island, I fall in love with it even more. 🥃

When I first visited Islay in 2019, I remember thinking how easy it was to meet people and make friends, even if you travel there alone. Islay is known for its whisky and most people have travelled to Islay for that reason so there is always this common topic to talk about.

I’ve only ever travelled to Islay in summer, but it was nice to experience it in winter too, especially seeing the snow covered Paps of Jura. One thing about travelling to Scottish islands in the winter though, is that you are at the mercy of the weather, and my return trip was delayed by 24 hours!

Such a fabulous few days on one of my favourite Scottish islands! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
