I OPENED THE DOOR ON HALLOWEEN — I SAW A LITTLE GIRL IN THE DRESS MY MISSING HUSBAND HAD SEWN FOR OUR DAUGHTER.
Halloween has always been more than just a holiday to me; it was a time when our little family could truly be together. Every year, we'd prepare with so much care: decorating the house just right, making it spooky but fun. And my husband, Carl, would sew our little girl's costume by hand. It became a tradition. But this year was different. Carl had disappeared without a trace. Now, it was just me and my daughter.
As Halloween approached, I knew I couldn't let the holiday slip by without giving her a bit of that magic we used to have. I put everything I had into getting her costume just right and sent her off to spend the evening with friends, knowing she deserved the joy. And I stayed behind, stocked up on candy, and waited for that first knock on the door.
Not long after, the doorbell rang, and that familiar sound of "Trick or treat!" filled the air. I opened the door and froze. Standing there was a little girl, dressed in a familiar outfit — a cute coat with a bouncy cape, just like the ones Carl used to make. The same fabric, the same stitching! My heart clenched as I felt a pang of something between hope and disbelief.
"That's a beautiful costume you have, sweetheart," I managed, my voice catching. "Where did you get it?"
She looked up at me with a proud smile. "My dad made it!"
I felt the ground shift under me. It had to be a coincidence… right? But deep down, I knew this was no coincidence. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I knelt down, trying to steady my voice. "Sweetheart, where's your house? I'd love to ask your dad how he made such a lovely costume."👇💥
