Emma Clark owns and runs Glenegedale House Islay on the Isle of Islay, an award winning, five star guest house described as ‘a true gem’, alongside her husband Graeme.

✨Find what interests you✨

We often try to pick quotes from different parts of the episodes but our guests, time and time again, drop such fantastic gems when we ask our last question that these nearly always make the cut! Eilidh Ross, in the latest episode, had a fantastic list of advice - have a listen to hear them all - but she began with this…

Carving your own path and following your passion / interest isn’t always the easiest route but a reminder to do just that is so valuable. We think this is applicable whether you’re at the beginning of your career, still at school or have more years than you’d maybe like to remember behind you! Eilidh’s passion and enthusiasm for crofting comes through loud and clear in this episode as a brilliant example of finding what she’s interested in dedicating herself to it! Thank you for this great advice Eilidh!

✨Collaboration ✨

Eilidh Ross, in the latest Women in Wellies episode, talks about setting up her own business, Camus Consulting. A key driver for her was bringing balance, flexibility and freedom to her home life allowing her to be a Mum but she also talks about the unexpected benefits and joys of stepping out on her own. One of these benefits is the opportunity to collaborate with, work alongside and be challenged in her thinking by a variety of professionals as they all work to get the best outcome for their clients.

Collaboration is something that lots of our guests have spoken about and it strikes us as a key element of success in rural Scotland! Who do you collaborate with or who could you collaborate with?

✨Ally Up✨

The gems of wisdom our guests come out with are always fantastic but you’ll all know why Charlotte and Hannah particularly loved this gem from Emma Macalister Hall on the latest episode! Emma shared how she has come in to rural and met some fantastic people, sought out brilliant individuals (mainly women - sorry men!) who get it, can help solve a problem or be that sounding board!

Particularly love that Emma became friends with Emma Clark (who featured on our International Women’s Day Bonus Episode) over needing a lesson in how to shell a crab 🦀 over lockdown and the virtual friendship was born!

Charlotte and Hannah are big advocates for this - find your people and be that person back, be supportive, encouraging and shout about them in the rooms they aren’t in (all positive of course!)

📦The Box 📦

As Gael said in the latest episode of Women in Wellies - we’re all familiar with the box, the one we’re told to think outside of all the time but we love the way she flipped this. What if you did do something different with the same box?

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just make it unique and put your own take on it - what a fantastic reminder and leveraging what we have, what has gone before is such a powerful tool!

What box could you do something different with?

🐝 how it began 🐝

In the latest episode of the Women in Wellies Podcast Gael’s passion and love for her bees and beekeeping shines through from the start of our conversation but it hasn’t always been that way, it all began somewhere!

A lot of you have commented on Gael’s story, her journey to get to where she is and one of the highlights of it is how she got started in beekeeping - the moment she first looked into a hive and was completely mesmerised! It’s a magical sight and what a brilliant way to get started on something new!

In Episode 16, Lynn Cassells joined us on the podcast and shared some of her story, of their adventures on the Croft and of why they are where they are but … there is more to the story, more Croft adventures and more for you to read about (or listen to on Audible!) in their book “Our Wild Farming Life”!

A book that both Charlotte and Hannah have enjoyed with tales of Ronnie and the pigs, the well and the tree planting it’s definitely one to add to your winter reading list!

🐝 Bands to Bees - it’s live, join us in Conversation with Gael Wilkinson in Episode 18🐝

Gael Wilkinson is the beekeeper behind Kin Bees with apiaries in Fife, Stirlingshire and West Lothian producing award winning raw honey. Gael spends most of her time in a bee suit and wellies in a field tending to her 50 hives, but this isn't how it has always been.

Join us as Gael shares her eclectic career from working in the world of live music with bands like U2 and Oasis, a stint in television before landing in the world of IT in the 90s. From here Gael shares her time running an import / export furniture business in the middle east and running a marketing and pr agency before stumbling upon the mesmerising world of bees and beekeeping where she has found a true passion. Through out the episode Gael's formidable determination to succeed at what she puts her mind to shines through.

Gael shares the joys of beekeeping alongside the challenges of it as a commercial operation. She shares the lows of being allergic to stings and the highs of catching swarms from castle rooftops and collaborating with fantastic businesses. We have a few more technical beekeeping moments and discuss the true taste of that fresh raw honey. Gael 's passion and enthusiasm is infectious with some brilliant advice for us all, especially the next generation.

🥳 Charlotte announced as a Director of RHET Highland 🥳

Charlotte’s passion to support and inspire the next generation is no secret and something we’ve spoken about a lot on the podcast so we’re really pleased to share that Charlotte has recently been appointed a Director of RHET Highland having been an advocate of them over the past year!

RHET (otherwise know as The Royal Highland Education Trust), is a charity that provides the opportunity for young people to learn about food, farming and the countryside, and to create a wider understanding of the environmental, economic and social realities of rural Scotland.

Through working with volunteers, RHET offers free educational activities and experiential learning opportunities linked to Curriculum for Excellence, taking children on to farms and out in to rural Scotland to see first hand where their food comes from, many for the first time.

As a Director, Charlotte will support this activity across the Highland Region including on the ground visits and fundraising! Do get in touch with Charlotte if you’d like to know more!

A lot of you have commented on Mary’s determination, her drive and her journey from Edinburgh to the Highlands. Charlotte and Hannah, like many of you, loved hearing Mary’s story but wow did her advice at the end resonant …

✨ Follow your gut ✨

On the latest episode of Women in Wellies we chatted to Lynn Cassells of Lynbreck Croft and we talked quite a lot, unsurprisingly, about food, the power of what we put in to our bodies, the added benefits found in vegetables and how this impacts our capabilities.

As you all know, at the end of every episode we ask each guest to share one piece of advice for the next generation so we totally loved that Lynn’s advice was follow your gut!

✨ Fortitude to Food - we’re delighted to release Episode 16 and our brilliant conversation with Lynn Cassells✨

Lynn Cassells is the co-owner of Lynbreck Croft, a 150 acre regenerative agriculture unit in the Cairngorms National Park. Alongside her partner Sandra, they have turned Lynbreck from a derelict crofting unit to a vibrant and diverse farming landholding where they grow their own food, produce beef, pork, eggs and honey for sale and run a range of tours and courses.

Join us as Lynn shares her journey from life as an apprentice ranger to the rollercoaster she has been on since buying Lynbreck, and how it all sort of happened by accident! Lynn talks about her passion for farming with nature and being able to share that experience and knowledge with others, her love of food and its intrinsic connection to our physical and mental wellbeing, and the importance of prioritising rest.

Lynn gives a brutally honest personal insight into the highs and lows of the last seven years, from what it was really like to write their book "Our Wild Farming Life, to the sometimes harsh realities of farming and the challenges they have faced and overcome, how this changed her, and how she always trusts her gut.
