Trying a new method to grow potatoes this year. This is a pallet method I had seen on YouTube. There are a few different ways people have done this but below are the steps I took for mine.

What you need:
- 4 pallets - Make sure they are clean and stamped "HT" for heat treated and not treated with chemicals
- Rope or Screws to Fasten Them
- Straw
- Soil
- Compost

Set the 4 pallets in a square and fasten together. You can use screws, nails or even tie with the straw bale twine.

Add a layer of straw and compost on the bottom.
Add soil about 8 inches deep. I packed straw into the spacing of the pallet slats to keep the soil in.

One you get a good 8-10 inches of soil; plant your seed potatoes. Add a thin layer of straw and water well.

As the plants grow, continue to add soil up the stem keeping 4-6 inches exposed at all times.

I planted Yukon Gold and red potatoes this weekend.

Try these easy “Mini Reusable Greenhouses” to start your seedlings! Maintain soil moisture, build humidity and help keep the soil warm.

Red solo cup and a sandwich bag! Don’t forget to put some holes in the bottom of the cup for drainage. When the seedlings show; you can remove the bag.

Remove the bag for about an hour everyday to allow air circulation if you choose to keep the sprouts covered.

Tomato tip: Only fill the cup 1/2-3/4 of the way so when the seedling is growing you can add soil and build a complete and solid root system before transplant! Tomato’s grow roots from anywhere on the stem.

This rain can leave at any time. Spent the last 2 hours containing water that has flooded into the chicken run. we’ve not had this much rain in such a short period since I put it up. Looks like it’s going to need some drainage work. It’s also going to be a long, rainy day. Now to go find out which tree fell last night and what damage it did.

It’s finally here! The start of the new year is for many things. One of which is particularly exciting and that is planning for your garden this year. Many zones allow for early spring planting and now is the time to get...

Now is the time to start planning that spring garden! Cool weather crops can thrive at times most don’t think gardens are able to be planted.

Things such as beets, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli and snap peas can be planted soon in milder zones. Hoops houses are quick and easy to assemble over seedlings in cooler zones for spring planting. I will be starting most of ours in about 3 weeks in Zone 7. So grab a notepad, scribble your plans away! Soon spring will welcome back beautiful things.
