Thanks for coming back Lonely Writers! ✨ Today I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Nathan Whitlock, author of the dark, satiric novel LUMP from Dundurn Press

LUMP is a dark comedy about marriage, motherhood, privilege, and power, about a woman whose attempt to escape crises in her health and marriage ends up causing only more chaos.

This episode is basically a love letter to Nathan’s wife (Meaghan Strimas), a talented writer in her own right and the many other female writers who have inspired much of his writing, but it’s also a deeply inspirational conversation about writing amid the deepest grief and finding your way back to the story.

Make sure to pick up a copy of LUMP if you haven’t already and you can stay connected with Nathan Whitlock by following him on social or online at https://www.nathanwhitlock.ca/

You can follow our host, Eden Boudreau on instagram and twitter at Eden Boudreau, and don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe wherever you listen to DLW! It goes a long way to helping other lonely writers find our little show.

Thank you for listening and as always, be well ❤️

With the gruesome events of the past week currently unfolding both in the real world and online, we feel it would be ignorant and distasteful to post an episode this week that might, in anyway, detract from the important news cycle coming from the Middle east covering the deaths and kidnapping of innocent Israeli and Jewish peoples by the Hamas. All human life regardless of race, culture, religion or where you live is valuable and we would rather take this week to educate ourselves on the conflict in the Middle east and what we as free Canadians can do to stop these atrocities from ever happening again.

If you would like to do so as well, please follow the link in our story to find a recommended reading list.

We talk about her debut novel A HISTORY OF BURNING (McClelland & Stewart), chasing the big capital W, as well as the pressure to do right by those who never had the chance to tell their stories.

Let us (re)introduce ourselves!

Meet your host:

Eden Boudreau (she/they) a lifelong maritimer relocated from Halifax, NS to southern Ontario in 2016 with her family. It was at this time when she decided to finally pursue her dream of becoming a published author.

Using her own life experiences as a bisexual, polyamorous woman who has survived her fair share of adversity as inspiration, Eden’s essays have been published in major publications such as Flare, Today’s Parent and Runner’s World Magazine.

As someone who has openly battled mental health issues, Eden was inspired during the isolation of the pandemic to launch her own podcast, Dear Lonely Writer. A show that interviews best selling authors from around the world and discusses the emotional labour that often comes with the writing process – before, during and even after the book deal.

Her debut book, CRYING WOLF: A Memoir (Book*Hug Press/March 2023) follows her difficult road to recovery after a violent sexual assault, with disbelievers at every turn due in part to her non-traditional lifestyle.

In her (minimal) free time, Eden spends it with her three sons, a menagerie of pets – including a duck named Dave – at their home in Georgina, ON.

We'll be taking this time to work on our own personal projects, as well as new exciting content for our listeners.

As always, thank you for the endless support and remember, be well lonely writer ❤️

Today on the show host Eden Boudreau chats with the talented Chelsea Wakelyn.

Chelsea Wakelyn’s debut novel, WHAT REMAINS OF ELSIE JANE, is a heartbreaking and darkly funny portrait of a woman unravelling in the wake of tragedy.

They talk about her poignant novel, how sometimes the isolation is familiar, and why writing in the fever dream is not sustainable but sometimes necessary when called to it.

On today’s episode of DEAR LONELY WRITER our host, Eden Boudreau gets to chat with author Andrew F. Sullivan, the author of THE MARIGOLD, a novel about a city eating itself.

They talk about what it takes to adapt not only your writing but your expectations on what the publishing journey might look like, as well as how to shrug off the pressure to fall prey to productivity culture and that art can’t be forced onto the page.

On today’s episode of DEAR LONELY WRITER our host, Eden Boudreau had the pleasure of chatting with the author of the perfect marriage of literary and speculative fiction, THE QUIET IS LOUD, a fantastical novel shortlisted for the 2022 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, Samantha Garner.

They talk about writing characters that channel our own struggles with identity and familial acceptance, the pros of publishing with small presses and how what you write - fiction or non fiction - doesn’t have to save the world. Being able to allow your readers to escape and find joy is reason enough.

On today’s episode of DEAR LONELY WRITER our host, Eden chats with author Kelly S Thompson whose second memoir, STILL, I CANNOT SAVE YOU tells the story of Kelly exploring her relationship with her older sister, Meghan. With honesty, love, and humour, in this moving memoir the sisters' relationship is tested by addiction, abuse, and illness, only to be rebuilt into an everlasting bond.

They discuss writing the ugly truth and how sometimes your writing WHY is simply because the book you needed didn’t exist, so you decided to write it.
