The END OF AN ERA
Pitso Mosimane has resigned from his duty as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. He was one of the longest serving and highly decorated coaches in South African football, who was in charge of the Brazilians during arguably the club's most successful era. He was head coach of Supersport United from 2001 to 2007, a period in which he won many trophies including the SAA Supa 8 title and the Absa cup
Pitso also had a brief stint as head coach of Bafana Bafana ( the South African National team) in 2010 after serving as assistant coach to both Carlos Alberto Parreira and Joel Santana. However this wasn't a particularly successful time for Pitso or our Nation and he was later sacked from the position after failing to qualify for Afcon back in 2012
On December the 2nd 2012 Pitso was appointed head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. Under his leadership the club went on to become one of the most dominant teams in the history of the PSL. He led them to 5 league titles between 2013 and 2020 whilst finishing runners up in the seasons that they didn't manage to win the league. Pitso also led the Brazilians to the CAF champions league title in the 2015/2016 season. But probably the most notable achievement during his time in charge of Sundowns was becoming the first South African team to win the CAF Super cup in 2017 by beating TP Mazembe. This was the main goal of owner Patrice Mostepe from the very moment he bought the club.
Pitso also managed to bag loads of individual awards, winning the PSL coach of the month 5 times as well the PSL coach of the year 4 times during his time in the PSL. Pitso also won the African coach of the year award in 2016. During his time at sundowns he boasted an impressive 56.72% win ratio by winning 190 of the 335 games in charge at the club.
Needless to Say Pitso's departure is a huge loss not only for Sundowns but also for the whole league as there a strong rumuors that Pitso has already been offered the Job as head coach of the record 8 times CAF champions league winners AL AHLY. Al AHLY have publically expressed their interest in Pitso and have said that their new Head Coach will be announced later this week.
We at Balls & Banter would like to thank Pitso for leading a team who brought us many exciting moments in the past.
