US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he wanted to assassinate Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad in 2017, but that his then-secretary of defense Jim Mattis opposed the operation.

"I would have rather taken him out. I had him all set," Trump told the morning show Fox & Friends.

"Mattis didn't want to do it. Mattis was a highly overrated general, and I let him go."

The revelations support reporting that came out in 2018 when Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward published his book "Fear: Trump in the White House" and which the president denied at the time.

First Israeli commercial plane lands in UAE flying over Saudi Airspace. This is the first flight of an Israeli commercial airliner to United Arab Emirates. It is also the first time that Saudi Arabia has allowed an Israeli plane to use its airspace signalling warming of ties between the two countries. The flight contained high level Israeli delegation including US President's son in law Jared Kushner who expects a formal normalization agreement to be signed in Washington as early as September.

Sudan's main rebel alliance has agreed on a peace deal with the government aimed at ending 17 years of conflict, official news agency SUNA said on Sunday.

The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), an alliance of rebel groups from the western region of Darfur and the southern states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, inked a peace agreement with the government late on Saturday.

A formal signing ceremony is planned for Monday in Juba, the capital of neighbouring South Sudan, which has hosted and helped mediate the long-running talks since late 2019.

Todays Analysis: Just Ice Breaking

Now that the UAE has agreed to normalize ties with Israel, "other countries in the region will soon follow suit" as in the words of US President Donald Trump. So most probably which countries will be these? Lets find out :-
1) Oman: Late Sultan Qaboos of Oman hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nentanyahu last year and declared his country wanted closer ties with Israel (see pic attached). For me personally, it was a bit of surprise that it was UAE and not Oman which normalized ties with Israel first. Anyways the Emirati decision was welcomed by Oman and given the fact that there will be little opposition within Oman against recognizing Israel, hence we will be listening a bit from Oman in future.
2) Bahrain: The tiny kingdom of Bahrain is heavily influenced by Saudi Arabia and UAE and the regime in country relies heavily on these countries for its survival. As the country is Shia majority, therefore it also faces threat from Iranian influence in its country. During the Arab Spring protests of 2011, analysts predict the monarchy wouldn't have survived had it not been for the GCC support. Bahrain also welcomed UAE's decision and according to foreign ministry hopes that the move will bring peace and prosperity to the region.

Today's Analysis: Normalization of ties between UAE and Israel

On 13th August, Israel and UAE agreed to a US brokered deal and normalize ties in upcoming days. This is a significant event which will have far reaching consequences for the region and Muslims worldwide as a whole. There were hints of normalization of ties between two countries since a few months but today the speculations are a reality.
From an economic point of view, UAE definitely gets a lot to gain from this move as direct flights to and from Israel will not only promote tourism but also enhance cooperation in science and cooperation between middle-east's most advanced economies. UAE will also have even more firm backing of US and if it chooses to buy Israeli military equipment, its defence will be bolstered. This will trigger a wave of other GCC countries most probably Oman, Bahrain and even Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel. Definitely this will spark heated debates in other countries such as Pakistan and Malaysia regarding the diplomatic interaction with Israel.
From a moral point of view the move is very irrational. According to United Nations, Israel is one of the worst violators of human rights but it seems like that Arabs are not too concerned about this now. Also, this is a big blow to Palestinian cause, as normalization of ties between UAE and Israel means that UAE has come to terms with the regime operating in Israel. The more Arabs come to rely more on Israel, the less likely the chance they will adopt a stiff attitude towards the Zionist regime. This will benefit Iran in the long run as it will come to be seen as the only country by Muslims standing against Israel and helping the Muslim Palestinian cause, thus elevating its support in Islamic circles.

This stark image shows the Korean peninsula from space. The difference between prosperity of North vs South Korea is clearly visible. South Korea, a highly developed country is fully lit and even its border with its northern neighbor is visible.
On the contrary North is almost completely dark owing to lack of access to electricity and economic impoverishment. The small bright dot in North Korea is its capital Pyongyang.

Qatar has the highest GDP per capita in the world at $132,886 as of 2019, while Burundi is the poorest country with GDP per capita at just $727. It means that it will take an average Burundian roughly half a year to earn what an average Qatari earns in a day! This highlights the stark unequality existing in modern day capitalist world.

02/08/2020

Today marks 30 years of Iraq's Invasion of Kuwait on 2nd August 1990. While Kuwait largely recovered from the first Gulf War, many believe invasion opened door to decades of devastation for Iraq.
After the indecisive Iran-Iraq War, Iraq's economy was in shatters. Saddam Hussain asked Kuwait to forgive its debts which Kuwait didn't, consequently Iraq invaded Kuwait, annexed it and declared it 19th province of Iraq. Ostensibly the purpose was to control Kuwait's vast oil wealth and use it to repay Iraq's debts.
The event sparked outrage with international community rejecting unilateral and illegal action by Iraq. US gave ultimatum to withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. Saddam refused to comply with this deadline and hence a coalition led by US launched Operation Dessert Storm which resulted in heavy losses for Iraq and forced it to retreat. Before leaving Iraqi troops set fire to hundreds of oil wells in Kuwait as can be seen in the second picture attached.
This chain of events left Iraq economically and militarily weak. The country was left diplomatically isolated and a UN arms and trade embargo was imposed on the country which shattered its economy, the effects of which are visible even now.

Today's Analysis: End of Dubai's golden era?

No major city in the world will be hit harder by the pandemic than Dubai. Before the COVID crisis, Dubai was the 4th most visited city on the planet and more than 70% of its economy relied on tourism. However, since Febraury tourism has plummeted to nearly zero and is expected to not recover for at least another 2 to 3 years given that a vaccine is developed sometime around late 2020.
With 70% of Dubai's economy suddenly ripped off, it means that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost and expats mainly from South Asia will return to their homes. This will lead to sharp decline in population which in turn causes lower consumer spending and reinforces the negative economic trend. Moreover, low population will crash the real estate market bubble. Oil which fed Dubai for decades currently makes up for less than 5% of its economy and with currently low oil prices, the future is gloomy.
Economists predict, that if the current situation persists, then around 3 quarters of businesses in Dubai will go bankrupt by end of 2020. So, do you think that the age of Dubai's glory is over or can the city surprise everyone with a strong recovery? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

Will Israel fight another war with Hezbollah?

News: Exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah on Lebanon border after Israeli airstrike kills Hezbollah fighter in Syria.

Analysis: Israel might wage a war againt Hezbollah in Lebanon due to several reasons:-
1) Israel's main backer Iran's economy is crippling with US sanctions and COVID 19 pandemic. If Iran reaches the much talked about $400 billion deal with China, then surely Iran will become financially stronger and be in a better position to help Hezbollah.
2) Donald Trump has given Israel clean chit for its unilateral decisions e.g. annexation of West Bank and recognizing Israeli soverignity over occupied Syrian Golan Heights. If there is a different president in United States after re-election, then perhaps Israel might not receive the same support from US as much as it will receive now.
3) Lebanon is a Christian majority country and economically devastated right now. Hezbollah is in Lebanese government's coalition and current circumstance mean that Hezbollah's support in Lebanon is at decades low point. Israel might want to use this to it's advantage to wipe out Hezbollah and secure its northern border once and forever.
4) With Hezbollah's forces and logistics being currently engaged in Syrian Civil War which is winding down, Israel has an advantage which it did not have in 2006 War
Due to these main reason, it might be one of the best times for Israel to take some significant action against Hezbollah, because as mentioned above, the window of opportunity for Israel is closing fast.

News: Pakistan denies reports that Chinese Wuhan Institute of Virology is conducting "covert operations" in Pakistan to test the possible use of Coronavirus as a future biological weapon.

Details: Several conspiracy theories are emerging since the past few months linking COVID-19 outbreak to Wuhan Lab. Believers of these theories claim that China was testing coronavirus as a biological weapon in Wuhan Lab when it leaked from there and caused the global pandemic. Why else was Xi Jinping just wearing a surgical mask when he visted Wuhan and not a full protective kit? Because he was already vaccinated against the virus. Moreover, some argue that China used Coronavirus to bring Western economies on their knees and to become a "superpower". China has rejected any such allegations. What are your thoughts? Let me know in commments.

Today's Analysis: Return of the Ottomans?
Turkey holds great influence over the Islamic world and is the de facto heir of Ottoman Empire just as Russia is of Soviet Union. Under Recep Tayyip Edrogan since 2003, Turkey has pursued more right leaning Islamic policies, ban on headscarf was lifted in 2011, over 20 thousand mosques constructed, tough stance on Israel, active military intervention in former Ottoman countries of Syria and Libya and the recent conversion of Hagia Sophia from museum to mosque all point to the same direction. Turkey is vying for the return of Ottoman Empire and regain its lost glory. But are we really heading towards the revival of caliphate?
Although a significant portion of Muslims might want this to happen, the reality is quite different. Lets understand that Turkey just like other sovereign countries is defending its national interests in Syria and Libya, not just spending its resources for the sake of "Ummah". Turkey has been facing a Kurdish seperatist insurgency in Kurdish majority regions bordering Iraq and Syria since decades and the conflict has killed thousands of people. Post 2011, the Kurds under PKK began uniting in northern Syria taking advantage of civil war in the country. They received support from US for fighting ISIL and now control around one third of Syria. Edrogan ordered military action against the Kurds in order to secure its south-eastern border and prevent PKK from launching cross border attacks in Turkey which had become all too common. Similarly in Libya, the Government of National Accord recognizes Turkey's claim of its soverign oceanic territory which is disputed by southern European countries. Hence, having a government in Libya which not only supports Turkey but also gives it exclusive rights for exploration of hydrocarbons in Mediterranean serve Turkish interests rather than the interests of Ummah.
We can't ignore the fact that Edrogan and his party have actively encouraged Neo-Ottomanism and Islamic policies, but they are limited to Turkey and not state sponsored abroad (debateable). The conversion of Hagia Sophia and lifting of headscarf ban give Edrogan's Justice and Development party more support in relatively conservative rural areas. However, some policies like foreign intervention have not been always popular amongst urban population and is one of the reasons why Justice and Development Party lost Istanbul's elections in 2018. Ironically Edrogan himself once stated that " If we lose Istanbul, we lose Turkey".

Today's Analysis: Debunking the myth of cold war between US & China.
Recently there has been a lot of media outcry over how the world is entering a new cold War between US and China just like America had one with Soviet Union. But any politically educated person will understand that either this is sheer disinformation on part of these so called media experts or just a publicity stunt to increase their ratings as people have stopped watching news channels after being fed up by saturated news regarding Covid 19.
The first and foremost thing to understand is that with US and Soviet Union there was clash of economic model; the US was vying for Capitalism and Soviet Union for Communism. However today, China is a heaven for Capitalists, hence the rhetoric of Marxism and exploitation of masses which was propelled by Soviet Union doesn't exist in this case. The communists who were standing up against the "bourgeoisie" during post World War 2 Cold War will ironically have no appeal to their narrative. With no such ideological conflict present, the economic clash myth is done and dusted here.
Now let's move on towards the political spectrum. Yes, it is true that China is not a democracy but it also doesn't follow communism as was practiced in Soviet Union even by the farthest stretch of mind. In fact, China is more democratic than many countries in the world like Saudi Arabia, North Korea etc. Of course, one can argue that the Chinese regime suppresses human rights, but it is not something unique only to China and has recently been observed more and more in nearly all countries, most notably India, Brazil and even the United States. Also, with US crimes exposed in Guantanamo Bay and needless war in Iraq with no WMDs ever recovered, US has lost the moral high ground which it once held.
Lastly, don't forget that Soviet Union and US had minimal trade, only around 1 percent of their total trade volume, while both America and China are largest trading partners of one another, therefore, both stand more to loose than to gain in the scenario being pushed by media giants. Any such move will result in economic collapse for both superpowers.
To conclude, yes there is a conflict of interest between US and China in regions such as Middle East (Iran especially) and subcontinent, but at the end of day sovereign nations will always put their own interests before the interests of their allies. For now, it will be best to consider Trump's "Chinese Virus" statements as his re-election campaign tool and to hide his administration's failure to handle corona virus in US. Donald Trump needs an "other" to win elections. Last time, it was Muslims and Mexicans, this time it is China.
