Shooting some website assets for Best of Both Tech! We’re using the robot arm here because we are shooting passes of the camera being built (sort of stop motion style). So we add a piece to the camera built, have the robot run through all the camera passes, then add another piece, and rinse and repeat till the camera is fully built. Then in post, we’ll layer it all together and the end result should appear as if the camera is building itself.

Oh you know…just another example of a MoVi flying a lens that everyone thinks is too heavy for it 🙃. We did have to use that Dionic battery on the side of the camera as counterweight for the lens though. In fact that’s the only reason that the battery is there, the camera is powered through the gimbal rig.

Programming some camera moves for a skincare company on a beach set. This is actually a great example of why it can be so important to allow for a pre-build/programming day when using a robot on set. As you can see, the beach set in this photo is looking a bit sparse. That’s because we needed to see where the camera paths were going to be before fully arting the set. The camera has to get right up in the set, so art dept needed to see where the camera and the robot were going to be so that they didn’t build the set in a way that inhibited us from maneuvering around the product as the client wanted. So for this pre-build day, the beach is only built up enough so that everyone knows where the product is going to be, then once programming is finished, the rest of the beach will be finished.

On rare occasions we pull out our littlest gimbal, the m5. Perfect for small cameras and situations where a normal sized gimbal would have trouble fitting. This was for a plane commercial, the m5 was perfect for fitting down the aisle. Now, why the m5 and not a handheld stick gimbal? Because it can be easily remotely controlled. The location was just too tight to comfortably allow a solo op to get in the position needed and operate the pan/tilt of the camera.

Getting ready to shoot some Legos! You can’t really see the set in this picture, but it's a Stranger Things themed house set. But what’s cool about this set is that it can be flipped upside down to reveal its dark version (the Upside Down dimension). So we chose to film it on a set where we could see the full reflection of the piece, and then hide half the lego set beneath the water tray so that it looked just like a normal house set, with a normal reflection. We created some camera moves with our Colossus robot arm and shot out the lego set, still hiding the dark side. Then we flipped the lego over and shot those same camera moves with the Upside Down dimension version of the set. The idea is to swap the reflection of the normal side of the set with the dark version in the final product (hence why motion control was needed).

A D&D inspired potions set for a brewery commercial! To make VFX much easier in post we opted to film using our robot arm, especially since we wanted to export the camera path into Unreal Engine later (rather than having to painstakingly track the camera later in AE which honestly is always a bad time).
