Irohazaka is the common name for two famous winding roads in Nikko, Tochigi, northern Japan. Zaka (or saka) means slope in Japanese. Iroha-san refers to the first 3 letters of the old Japanese alphabet. Irohazaka consists of 48 bends. 48 is the number of characters in the Japanese alphabet. Each bend is named after one of the 48 characters.
