You’ve probably heard of the saying “Study smart, not hard” 💭 But what does it mean?
In my experience, studying smart means using active study/learning methods and maximizing your time spent on weaker areas ✔️ This is the difference between spending 5 hours highlighting/rewriting everything from your textbook versus spending 5 hours rewriting only what you need to, quizzing yourself, and making active connections between ideas.
Here are some things you can do to study smart:
📖 On the same day after your lecture, briefly go over the the topics you learned in class to help you retain the info. You’re more likely to forget new info if you don’t review them regularly (Google The Forgetting Curve)
🧠 Decide which topics are your weak areas and focus on improving those areas
⏱ Space out your study sessions. It helps to study in small chunks to avoid overwhelming yourself. Pomodoro technique is useful for this!
📚 Have mandatory textbook prereadings? Try reading the Chapter Review/Summary first to get the key points and gist of the topic, then dive into the details after. Ask if textbook material will be tested.
📚 Supplementary readings? If you want to be efficient, don’t waste time reading them unless you don’t understand the topic well enough. Ask if textbook material will be tested.
⛓ Active learning 👉🏻 Make connections when reading and taking notes. Is what you’re reading/writing down related to something else you read/wrote down earlier? How are these ideas connected? This is a method of learning that will really solidify the info in your head. Make flowcharts to express these connections!
📝 Test yourself by making up questions for active recall! See my active recall reel.
🔍 Find past exams or papers that you can use to apply your learning.
❌ Don’t mindlessly highlight your entire textbook or note pages. You’re not picking out key ideas.
❌ Don’t rewrite every single piece of info. Rewrite notes on topics you need more review on.
❌ Don’t overwork yourself. Take a day off per week and focus on you.
Hope this helps! ❤️
