The Supreme Court was inclined to stay the order but Solicitor General Tushar Mehta gave assurance that nothing irreversible (no appointments or admissions) will happen between today and Tuesday.

The court said that Muslims in the state were enjoying the benefits of this reservation for a long time and the order to scrap the quota was based on fallacious presumptions.

Slamming the state government, the court said foundation of your decision making process is flawed and shaky.

After scrapping Muslim reservation, the Karnataka government gave 2 per cent each quota to Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities.

Justice Nagarathna queried Mehta, what was the great urgency to scrap the quota as the decision is based on an interim report, and the state government could have waited for the final report....

The iconic structure of Ambedkar, which will set another landmark for the state, is claimed to be the tallest statue in the country ever built for the ‘architect of Indian Constitution’ – with an overall height of 175-ft, including a 50-ft-high circular base resembling the edifice of Parliament of India.

Interestingly, the statue was designed by renowned sculptors, Ram Vanji Sutar (98) and his son Anil Ram Sutar (65) of Ram Sutar Art Creations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, who also designed several monumental sculptures, including the world’s tallest statue — the Statue of Unity (597 feet) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat.

Supreme Court to reconsider its 1992 decision in CBI v. Anupam J Kulkarni that said that, "A person cannot be detained in police custody after the expiry of fifteen days from their initial arrest in a case".

Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar opinion stated that the current remand period may end before a higher court reverses an improper custody order.

"It is true that this Court stated in the matter of Anupam J. Kulkarni (supra) that no person may be held in police custody for longer than 15 days following the date of their arrest. We believe that the position taken by this Court in the Anupam J. Kulkarni case (above) has to be given another look."

In September 2022, the Calcutta High Court issued an order granting statutory/default bail to a public servant accused of corruption. The court said this while partially allowing the appeal of that order.

Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, alleges she had an affair with Donald Trump in 2006 and was paid $130,000 as part of a non-disclosure agreement days before the 2016 presidential election.

She sued him for defamation after he dismissed her claims of being threatened to keep quiet about the tryst as a “total con job.” A judge threw out the case in 2018.

Commissioner for the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Trump’s attorneys “reasonably spent” more than 183 hours on an appeal of the case but denied a request for another $5,150 in other fees because it wasn’t itemized.

After a federal appeals court upheld that award last year, Daniels stated: “I will go to jail before I pay a penny.”

Following the Lokayukta action against his son, the BJP MLA tendered his resignation as KSDL Chairman, even as he claimed that the raid by the anti-graft agency was a conspiracy against him and his family.

Within hours of the trap, a team of Lokayukta officials raided his house and recovered the unaccounted cash.

In his resignation letter sent to the chief minister, he said there is no “relation” between him and the Lokayukta raid, which he termed as a conspiracy against him and his family.

The action against Prshanth was proof that the Lokayukta has been revived to contain corruption unlike the previous Congress regime which created a separate ACB apart from the Lokayukta to “cover up their wrong deeds,” Bommai said.

Due to the lack of a strong Lokayukta in the past, many corruption cases during the Congress regime could never get investigated, Bommai told reporters in Bengaluru.

An army jawan was killed and another injured in the gunfight, police added.

The terrorists, who were identified as Aqib Mustaq Bhat from Pulwama and Aijaz Ahmad Bhat from Tral, were hiding in a mosque in Padgampora village in Awantipora when a joint team of the army, J&K Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched an operation based on specific inputs.

Additional director general of police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar said the terrorists were working with The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Besides the killing of bank employee Sanjay Sharma on Sunday, the terrorists were also involved in the killing of two migrant labourers at Lajoora in Pulwama on April 5 last year and a weapon snatching attempt at Tral on January 1 this year, police said.

The new law was welcomed by charities campaigning against forced marriages, an issue largely affecting some sections of the South Asian and African communities in the UK.

“This law will better protect vulnerable young people, by cracking down on forced marriage in our society,” said Dominic Raab, UK Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice.

“Those who act to manipulate children into marrying under-age will now rightly face the full force of the law,” he said.

It is now an offence to cause a child under the age of 18 to enter a marriage in any circumstances, without the need to prove that a form of coercion was used
